तीन बुद्धिमान Teen Buddhimaan (The Three Wise Men)

एक गरीब आदमी के तीन बेटे थे। घर में पैसा या सोना कुछ नहीं था, इसलिए पिता बार-बार अपने बेटों को समझाते थे कि उन्हें एक अलग तरह की दौलत इकट्ठा करनी चाहिए, हर चीज़ और बात को ध्यान से देखने और समझने की आदत। पिता के अनुसार तेज नजर और तेज दिमाग ही असली दौलत है, जिसके पास यह दौलत होती है उसे कभी कुछ कम नहीं पड़ता।

A poor man had three sons. The family had no money or gold, so the father often told his sons that they should build a different kind of wealth instead, the habit of observing and understanding everything deeply. According to him, sharp eyesight and quick intelligence were the truest riches, something that would never leave a person feeling lacking or left behind others.

कुछ दिनों बाद पिता की मृत्यु हो गई। तीनों भाई साथ बैठे और सोचा कि गाँव में उनके लिए करने को ज्यादा कुछ नहीं है, तो क्यों न बाहर जाकर दुनिया घूमें। जरूरत पड़ी तो चरवाहे या खेत में मजदूरी भी कर लेंगे, पर भूखे नहीं रहेंगे। यह सोचकर वे यात्रा पर निकल गए। रास्ते में उन्होंने सुनसान घाटियाँ और ऊँचे पहाड़ पार किए, लगातार चालीस दिन चलते रहे। खाना खत्म हो गया था, वे बहुत थक गए थे और पैरों में छाले पड़ गए थे, फिर भी चलते रहे। आखिर में उन्हें दूर एक बड़ा शहर दिखा और वे खुश होकर तेजी से उस तरफ बढ़े।

Some time later the father passed away. The three brothers sat together, thought over their situation, and decided there was little for them to do in the village, so they set out to see the world. They agreed they would work as shepherds or farm labourers if needed, but would never go hungry. With that resolve, they began their journey, crossing deserted valleys and high mountains, walking continuously for forty days. Their food ran out, they grew exhausted, and blisters formed on their feet, yet they kept resting and moving on. Finally they spotted the trees and houses of a large city in the distance, and, overjoyed, quickened their pace toward it.

जैसे ही तीनों भाई शहर के पास पहुँचे, सबसे बड़ा भाई अचानक रुक गया। उसने जमीन पर बने निशान देखे और बोला कि थोड़ी देर पहले यहाँ से कोई बहुत बड़ा ऊँट गया है। थोड़ा और आगे जाने पर मझले भाई ने सड़क के दोनों तरफ देखा और कहा कि शायद इस ऊँट की एक आँख में रोशनी नहीं है। और आगे जाने पर सबसे छोटे भाई ने कहा कि उस ऊँट पर एक औरत और एक बच्चा बैठा था। दोनों बड़े भाइयों ने कहा 'बिलकुल सही' और तीनों आगे बढ़ गए।

As the three brothers neared the city, the eldest suddenly stopped. He looked at marks on the ground and said that a very large camel had passed that way a short while ago. Walking further, the middle brother looked at both sides of the road and said the camel was probably blind in one eye. Going a bit further still, the youngest brother said a woman and a child had been riding on the camel. The two elder brothers confirmed this, and the three walked on.

थोड़ी देर बाद एक घुड़सवार वहाँ से निकला। सबसे बड़े भाई ने पूछा कि क्या वह कुछ खोई हुई चीज़ ढूँढ़ रहा है। घुड़सवार ने घोड़ा रोककर 'हाँ' कहा। भाइयों ने एक-एक करके बताया कि उसका ऊँट खो गया है, वह बहुत बड़ा है, एक आँख से नहीं देखता, और उस पर एक औरत और एक बच्चा बैठा था। यह सुनकर घुड़सवार को शक हुआ, उसने पूछा कि उन्हें बिना ऊँट देखे ये सब बातें कैसे पता चलीं। भाइयों ने कहा कि उन्होंने उसका ऊँट कभी देखा ही नहीं, वे बस अपनी आँख और दिमाग का सही इस्तेमाल करना जानते हैं। पर घुड़सवार को यह जवाब पसंद नहीं आया, उसने तलवार निकाल ली और भाइयों को आगे-आगे चलने को कहा।

A little later, a horseman rode past. The eldest brother asked if he was searching for something he had lost. The horseman reined in his horse and answered yes. The brothers, one after another, described that his camel was missing, that it was very large, blind in one eye, and had been carrying a woman and a child. Hearing this, the horseman grew suspicious and asked how they could know all this without having seen the camel. The brothers stated plainly that they had never seen his camel at all, they simply knew how to use their eyes and their reasoning well. But this answer did not satisfy the horseman, he drew his sword and ordered the three brothers to march ahead of him.

घुड़सवार तीनों भाइयों को सीधे राजा के महल में ले गया। उसने राजा को बताया कि वह अपने जानवरों के साथ पहाड़ों की तरफ जा रहा था, उसकी पत्नी बेटे के साथ पीछे एक बड़े ऊँट पर आ रही थी, पर किसी वजह से वे पीछे छूट गए और रास्ता भटक गए। उन्हें ढूँढ़ते समय उसे तीन पैदल यात्री मिले, और उसे लगा कि इन्हीं लोगों ने उसका ऊँट चुराया है और शायद उसकी पत्नी-बेटे को भी नुकसान पहुँचाया है। राजा ने पूछा कि उसे ऐसा क्यों लगता है। घुड़सवार ने कहा कि उसने भाइयों को कुछ नहीं बताया था, फिर भी उन्होंने ऊँट का आकार, उसकी एक आँख की कमी और उस पर बैठी औरत-बच्चे की बात बता दी। यह सुनकर राजा को भी शक हुआ, इसलिए उसने भाइयों को दरबार में बुलाने को कहा।

The horseman took the three brothers straight to his king's palace. He told the king that he had been heading toward the mountains with his flock while his wife and son followed behind on a large camel, but the camel had somehow fallen behind and lost its way. While searching for them, he met three men travelling on foot, and he believed they must have stolen his camel and possibly harmed his wife and son too. The king asked why he thought so. The horseman answered that he had told the brothers nothing about the camel, yet they had described its size, its blindness in one eye, and even the woman and child riding it. Hearing this, the king too felt that knowing so much without being told was suspicious, so he ordered the brothers to be brought before the court.

राजा ने भाइयों को डराते हुए पूछा कि उन्होंने ऊँट कहाँ छिपाया है। भाइयों ने साफ कहा कि वे चोर नहीं हैं और उन्होंने ऊँट कभी देखा ही नहीं। राजा ने कहा कि बिना बताए इतना सही बता देना संभव नहीं लगता, तो वे कैसे कह सकते हैं कि उन्होंने चोरी नहीं की। भाइयों ने प्यार से समझाया कि इसमें हैरानी की कोई बात नहीं है, क्योंकि बचपन से ही उन्हें आदत है कि वे अपने आसपास की किसी भी चीज़ को नजरअंदाज नहीं करते, वे हमेशा चीजों को ध्यान से देखने और सोचने का अभ्यास करते रहे हैं, इसी वजह से वे ऊँट को बिना देखे भी उसके बारे में बता पाए।

The king, speaking sternly, demanded to know where they had hidden the camel. The brothers insisted they were not thieves and had never even seen the camel. The king said it seemed impossible for anyone to describe something so accurately without being told, so how could they claim innocence. The brothers politely explained there was nothing surprising in it, since childhood they had made a habit of never letting anything around them escape their notice, always practising careful observation and reasoning, which is exactly how they could describe the camel without seeing it.

राजा को अब भी थोड़ा शक था, इसलिए उसने चुपके से अपने मंत्री को बुलाकर कान में कुछ कहा। मंत्री बाहर गया और दो नौकरों के साथ एक बड़ी बंद पेटी लेकर लौटा, जिसे दरवाज़े के पास रख दिया गया। भाई दूर खड़े होकर देखते रहे कि पेटी कहाँ से आई और कैसे रखी गई। राजा ने पूछा कि पेटी में क्या है। सबसे बड़े भाई ने कहा कि उसमें कोई छोटी गोल चीज़ है। मझले भाई ने कहा कि वह अनार होगा। सबसे छोटे भाई ने कहा कि वह अनार अभी कच्चा है। यह सुनकर राजा ने पेटी खुलवाई और अंदर देखा। उसमें सच में एक कच्चा अनार निकला, और राजा बहुत हैरान रह गया।

The king still had a lingering doubt, so he quietly called his minister and whispered something in his ear. The minister went out and returned with two servants carrying a large closed box, which was placed near the doorway. The brothers, watching from a distance, noted carefully where the box had come from and how it was set down. The king asked what was inside it. The eldest brother said it held some small round object. The middle brother said it must be a pomegranate. The youngest added that the pomegranate was still unripe. On hearing this, the king had the box brought closer and opened, and peered inside. Sure enough, an unripe pomegranate lay within, and the king's astonishment knew no bounds.

हैरान राजा ने अनार निकालकर सबको दिखाया और घुड़सवार से कहा कि ये लोग चोर नहीं, बल्कि बहुत समझदार इंसान हैं, इसलिए वह इन्हीं के बताए रास्ते पर जाकर अपना ऊँट खुद खोजे। दरबार में मौजूद हर कोई हैरान था, पर सबसे ज्यादा राजा खुद हैरान था। उसने भाइयों के लिए अच्छा खाना मँगवाया और पूछा कि उन्हें यह सब कैसे पता चला। बड़े भाई ने कहा कि धूल पर पैरों के निशान से उसे बड़े ऊँट का पता चला। मझले भाई ने कहा कि सड़क के एक तरफ की घास खाई हुई थी और दूसरी तरफ की वैसी ही थी, इससे उसने समझ लिया कि ऊँट की एक आँख की रोशनी जा चुकी है। सबसे छोटे भाई ने कहा कि उसने ऊँट के घुटनों के निशान के पास औरत के जूतों और बच्चे के छोटे पैरों के निशान देखे, इसी से पता चला कि उन पर एक औरत और बच्चा बैठा था। अनार के बारे में बड़े भाई ने बताया कि पेटी उठाते समय हल्कापन और अंदर किसी गोल चीज़ के लुढ़कने की आवाज़ सुनी थी। मझले भाई ने कहा कि पेटी बगीचे की तरफ से आई थी, जहाँ अनार के पेड़ लगे हैं। सबसे छोटे भाई ने खिड़की की तरफ इशारा किया कि इस मौसम में बगीचे के सारे अनार कच्चे हैं, यह राजा खुद देख सकता है। राजा ने बाहर देखा तो सच में सारे अनार कच्चे थे। राजा भाइयों की समझदारी से बहुत खुश हुआ और उन तीनों को अपने राजदरबार में इज़्ज़त के साथ जगह दे दी।

The astonished king took out the pomegranate to show everyone and told the horseman that these men were not thieves but truly wise people, so he should go find his own camel along the path they had described. Everyone in the court was amazed, but the king himself was the most astonished of all. He ordered fine food for the brothers and asked them in detail how they had known so much. The eldest explained that footprints in the dust told him a large camel had passed. The middle brother explained that the grass on one side of the road had been grazed while the other side was untouched, from which he guessed the camel was blind in one eye. The youngest explained that he had seen kneeling marks of the camel alongside a woman's footprints and small footprints of a child, which told him a woman and child had been riding it. About the pomegranate, the eldest said that the box's lightness and the sound of something small and round rolling inside had told him its size and shape. The middle brother added that since the box came from the direction of the garden, where many pomegranate trees grew, he guessed it must be a pomegranate. The youngest, pointing to the window, said that at this time of year every pomegranate in the garden was still unripe, which the king could see for himself. The king looked outside and indeed found unripe pomegranates hanging on every tree in the garden. Deeply impressed by the brothers' extraordinary insight, the king said that although they were poor in wealth, they possessed a vast treasure of intelligence, and he honoured them with a place in his own court.
