माँ, कह एक कहानी Maa, Kah Ek Kahani (Mother, Tell Me a Story)

बेटा राहुल अपनी माँ से कहानी सुनाने को कहता है। माँ मजाक में पूछती हैं कि क्या वह उन्हें अपनी नानी समझ बैठी है जो राजा-रानी की कहानियां सुनाएगी। बेटा बताता है कि घर की सेविका ने उसे बताया है कि वह नानी की बेटी है, इसलिए वह जिदकर पूछता है कि कहानी में कोई राजा या रानी का किरदार है या नहीं।

The poem opens with son Rahul insisting that his mother tell him a story. The mother teases back, asking if he thinks she is his grandmother, since it is grandmothers who tell tales of kings and queens. Rahul explains that the maid at home has told him mother is his grandmother's daughter, so he keeps insisting, lying down comfortably, asking whether royalty features anywhere in the tale.

माँ कहानी शुरू करती हैं। बेटे को हठीला बताती हैं और बताती हैं कि एक दिन बहुत सवेरे बेटे के पिता एक बगीचे (उपवन) में घूमने निकले थे, जहाँ हल्की हवा चल रही थी।

The mother begins the story. She calls him stubborn and affectionate, and tells him that one early morning his father was walking in a garden where a pleasant, sweet-smelling breeze was blowing gently.

माँ बताती हैं कि उस बाग में रंग-बिरंगे फूल खिले थे, ओस की बूंदें चमक रही थीं, ठंडी हवा आ रही थी और एक तालाब में पानी लहरों में नाच रहा था। पक्षी मीठी-मीठी आवाज में गा रहे थे।

The mother describes the beauty of the garden that morning: flowers of every colour were in bloom, dew-drops sparkled, a gentle breeze was blowing, and water rippled prettily in a small pond, while birds sang sweetly all around.

अचानक ऊपर से एक हंस तेज बाण से घायल होकर नीचे गिर पड़ा। माँ इसे 'पक्षी का नुकसान' और 'दर्दभरी कहानी' कहती हैं, क्योंकि इसी घटना से पूरी कहानी आगे बढ़ती है।

Suddenly a swan fell down, struck and wounded by a sharp arrow. The mother calls this the bird's misfortune and a sorrowful turn in the story, since this incident is what the rest of the story grows out of.

राहुल के पिता चौंककर घायल हंस को उठा लेते हैं, जिससे हंस को नयी जिंदगी मिलती है। तभी वहीं वह शिकारी भी आ जाता है जिसने उस हंस पर तीर चलाया था।

Startled, Rahul's father picks up the wounded swan, giving it a fresh chance at life. Right then the hunter who had shot the arrow arrives too. The mother describes this as the moment of the goal being achieved and calls it a bittersweet turn in the story.

शिकारी घायल हंस को वापस मांगता है क्योंकि राहुल के पिता उसे बचा चुके थे, जबकि शिकारी का कहना था कि वह पक्षीों को मारकर जिंदा रहता था। दोनों अपनी-अपनी बात पर अड़े रहे, इसलिए बात आखिर केंद्र सरकार (न्यायालय) तक पहुंच गई, जहाँ यह बात सबको पता चली।

The hunter demands the wounded bird back, since he had already saved himself by killing off birds through hunting -- but Rahul's father had already stopped him from doing so. Both sides insisted on their own claim, so the matter reached the royal court, where everyone came to know of it.

कहानी यहाँ आकर माँ रुक जाती हैं और राहुल से पूछती हैं कि वह खुद बताए कि इस लड़ाई में किसकी जीत होनी चाहिए, बिना डरे अपना जवाब दे। राहुल चौंक जाता है कि उसे ही फैसला सुनाने को कहा जा रहा है।

At this point in the story the mother pauses and asks Rahul himself to decide the dispute -- whose side justice should take, and to speak fearlessly about who should win. Rahul is surprised that he is now the one being asked to give the final verdict.

राहुल जवाब देता है कि वह पूरी कहानी सुन रहा है, और उसका मत है कि जब कोई बेकसूर को मारता है, तो दूसरों को उसे बचाना चाहिए, मारने वाले की जगह बचाने वाले का साथ देना चाहिए, क्योंकि सच्चा न्याय वही है जो दया से भरा हो। माँ बेटे के इस जवाब से खुश होकर कहती हैं कि उसने कहानी का सही मतलब समझ लिया है।

Rahul answers that he is listening carefully, and his view is that if someone attacks an innocent creature, others must rescue it -- the protector should be favoured over the attacker, because true justice is one that is full of compassion. Pleased with this answer, the mother tells Rahul that he has truly understood the story.
