फूल और काँटा Phool aur Kaanta (The Flower and the Thorn)

कवि बताते हैं कि फूल और काँटा दोनों एक ही जगह पर पैदा होते हैं और एक ही पौधा उन दोनों की देखभाल करता है। रात में जो चाँद चमकता है, वह दोनों पर एक जैसी चाँदनी बिखेरता है। बादल भी दोनों पर बराबर बरसते हैं और हवा भी दोनों पर एक जैसी बहती है। मतलब यह कि प्रकृति दोनों को एक जैसा प्यार और देखभाल देती है, कोई फर्क नहीं करती।

The poet says the flower and the thorn are both born in the same place and the same plant nurtures them. The moon that shines at night spreads the same moonlight on both. The clouds rain equally on both, and the same breeze blows over both. In other words, nature gives them exactly the same nourishment, care and surroundings, without any discrimination.

इतनी एक जैसी देखभाल मिलने पर भी कवि कहते हैं कि प्रकृति हमें यह दिखाती है कि दोनों का व्यवहार एक जैसा नहीं होता। काँटा अपनी नोक से किसी की उँगली में चुभ जाता है और किसी के सुंदर कपड़े को फाड़ देता है। वह प्यार में डूबी तितलियों के पंखों को भी काट देता है और भौंरे के काले शरीर को भी चुभो देता है। इस तरह काँटा जिसके भी पास आता है, उसे दुख या तकलीफ ही देता है।

Despite this equal upbringing, the poet says, nature always shows us that the manner or nature of the two is not the same. The thorn pierces someone's finger with its sharpness and tears someone's fine garment. It even clips the wings of butterflies lost in love and pierces the dark body of the bumblebee. Thus the thorn brings only pain and injury to whoever comes near it.

इसके उलट फूल तितलियों को अपनी गोद में प्यार से बैठा लेता है और भौंरे को अपना खास मीठा रस पिलाता है। वह अपनी खुशबू और अलग-अलग रंगों से हर समय अपने आस-पास की कली को भी खिलाकर रखता है, यानी वह सबको साथ लेकर चलता है और सबको खुशी देता है। कवि यहाँ दिखाते हैं कि जहाँ काँटा दर्द देता है, वहीं फूल अपने कोमल स्वभाव से हर किसी को खुशी और आनंद देता है।

In contrast, the flower cradles butterflies in its lap and offers the bumblebee its own special sweet nectar. With its fragrance and unique colours it keeps even the buds around it blooming at all times, meaning it carries everyone along and shares joy with all. Here the poet shows that where the thorn causes pain, the flower, with its gentle nature, brings happiness and delight to everyone.

अंत में कवि एक गहरी बात कहते हैं: जो चीज़ किसी को बुरी लगती है, वही चीज़ किसी और के लिए अच्छी और सम्मान की बात बन जाती है। फिर वे पूछते हैं कि अगर किसी इंसान में अच्छे गुणों की कमी हो, तो सिर्फ उसके बड़े खानदान की बड़ाई करने से क्या फायदा होगा? इस तरह कवि यह सिखाते हैं कि इंसान का सम्मान उसके परिवार के नाम से नहीं बल्कि उसके अपने स्वभाव, गुणों और कामों से मिलना चाहिए।

In the end the poet makes a profound point: what irritates one eye and looks unpleasant to one, that very same thing looks beautiful adorning someone else's head. He then asks, if a person lacks true greatness, that is, good qualities, what use is it to merely boast about their high family lineage? Thus the poet's message is that a person's respect should come not from the name of their family but from their own nature, qualities and deeds.
