कबीर के दोहे Kabir ke Dohe (Couplets of Kabir)

कबीर कहते हैं कि सत्य के बराबर कोई तपस्या नहीं है और झूठ के बराबर कोई पाप नहीं है। जिस व्यक्ति के हृदय में सच्चाई है, उसके हृदय में स्वयं गुरु का वास होता है।

Kabir says there is no penance equal to truth, and no sin equal to falsehood. In whose heart truth resides, in that heart the guru himself dwells.

कबीर कहते हैं कि खजूर के पेड़ की तरह बड़ा हो जाने से क्या फायदा, जब उससे राहगीर को न तो छाया मिलती है और न ही उसका फल आसानी से मिल पाता है क्योंकि वह बहुत ऊँचाई पर लगता है। यानी बड़ा होने के साथ-साथ उपयोगी और दूसरों के काम आना भी ज़रूरी है।

Kabir says what use is being tall like a date palm tree, if it offers no shade to the traveller and its fruit hangs too far up to reach easily. In other words, along with being great, one must also be useful and helpful to others.

कबीर कहते हैं कि यदि गुरु और गोविंद (ईश्वर) दोनों एक साथ सामने खड़े हों, तो पहले किसके पैर छुए जाएँ? वे कहते हैं कि मैं अपने गुरु पर न्योछावर हूँ क्योंकि उन्होंने ही मुझे गोविंद तक पहुँचने का रास्ता बताया।

Kabir says if both the guru and Govind (God) stand before me together, whose feet should I touch first? He answers that he is devoted to his guru, for it was the guru who showed him the way to God.

कबीर कहते हैं कि अत्यधिक बोलना अच्छा नहीं और अत्यधिक चुप रहना भी अच्छा नहीं। इसी तरह अत्यधिक बारिश होना अच्छा नहीं और अत्यधिक धूप होना भी अच्छा नहीं। हर चीज़ में संतुलन होना ज़रूरी है।

Kabir says excessive talking is not good, nor is excessive silence. Likewise, excessive rain is not good, nor is excessive sunshine. Balance is essential in everything.

कबीर कहते हैं कि ऐसी वाणी बोलनी चाहिए जिसमें मन का अहंकार मिट जाए। ऐसी मधुर वाणी दूसरों को भी शांति देती है और स्वयं भी शांत होती है।

Kabir says one should speak in such a way that the ego of the mind dissolves. Such sweet speech brings peace to others, and also brings peace to oneself.

कबीर कहते हैं कि आलोचना करने वाले (निंदक) को अपने पास रखना चाहिए, यहाँ तक कि उसके लिए अपने आँगन में झोंपड़ी बनवा देनी चाहिए। क्योंकि वह बिना पानी और बिना साबुन के भी हमारे स्वभाव को शुद्ध और निर्मल बना देता है - यानी वह हमें हमारी गलतियाँ बताकर सुधारने में मदद करता है।

Kabir says one should keep a critic close, even building him a hut in one's own courtyard. For without water or soap, he purifies our nature - that is, by pointing out our faults, he helps us improve.

कबीर कहते हैं कि साधु (अच्छा इंसान) ऐसा होना चाहिए जैसे अनाज छानने वाला सूप (छाज) होता है - जो सार (असली अनाज) को अपने पास रख लेता है और थोथे (भूसी) को उड़ा देता है। यानी अच्छे इंसान को विवेकशील होना चाहिए - अच्छाई को अपनाना और बुराई को त्याग देना।

Kabir says a good person should be like a winnowing basket - one that keeps the essence (the real grain) and blows away the chaff. In other words, a good person should be discerning - embracing good and discarding bad.

कबीर कहते हैं कि मन एक पंछी की तरह है, जो जहाँ चाहे उड़कर चला जाता है। जो व्यक्ति जैसी संगति (साथ) रखता है, उसे वैसा ही फल (परिणाम) मिलता है - यानी हमारा संग-साथ हमारे स्वभाव और भविष्य को तय करता है।

Kabir says the mind is like a bird, flying wherever it pleases. Whoever keeps whatever company, receives fruit accordingly - meaning the company we keep shapes our character and our future.
