Summary

The narrator explains that only three people live in the house - mother, father, and the narrator. But father often says the house has become like a wayside inn, as if he himself were merely a guest while someone else truly owns it. The narrator explains why - all kinds of birds always camp in the mango tree in the courtyard, and the inside of the house is no different. Dozens of mice have settled into the rooms, and pigeons, lizards, wasps and an entire army of ants also share the house. A cat, though not a resident, often peeks in, sometimes drinking milk and leaving whenever she pleases.

The narrator recounts that one day two sparrows flew straight into the house uninvited and began inspecting the whole place, as if checking whether it was fit to live in. Then they flew off - but two days later, the family discovered they had made their bed inside the ceiling fan's motor casing, brought their belongings there too, and were happily singing. Seeing this, mother remarked that driving them away would now be difficult, since they had already built a nest - had they been stopped earlier, perhaps they would have flown away.

Seeing the sparrows, father grows angry and begins trying to drive them away - clapping loudly, making hissing noises, and jumping about under the fan. Mother makes sarcastic remarks about his efforts, saying that if he couldn't even get rid of the mice, how would he manage the sparrows. The narrator recounts that the sparrows peeked out of the nest, watching father's antics, and began chirping, as if asking each other who this man dancing about was - this makes mother laugh heartily, which only irritates father further.

When nothing works, father tries more measures - stuffing cloth under the doors to seal every gap, and lunging at the sparrows with a stick. Finally his patience runs out entirely, and he decides to tear the nest down altogether. Climbing onto a stool, he begins pulling out the nest's straw with the tip of the stick. Mother teases him again, remarking that two straws are out, so the remaining thousands will follow soon enough. Meanwhile, the narrator observes that the two sparrows sit silently on the courtyard wall, looking thinner and duller, no longer chirping - as if worn down by this relentless harassment.

Suddenly a loud chirping bursts out, freezing father's hands mid-action. Tiny chicks poke their heads out from within the fan casing, chirping as if introducing themselves - announcing their arrival and calling for their parents. The narrator recounts that seeing this, father silently steps down from the stool, removes the stick from the nest and sets it aside, and sits down in his chair without a word. Mother immediately throws open all the doors, and the parent sparrows rush in, reuniting with their chicks and feeding them. The room grows noisy once more, but this time father does not get angry - he simply watches them, smiling, his heart filled with compassion and tenderness.
