एक टोकरी भर मिट्टी Ek Tokri Bhar Mitti (A Basketful of Soil)

एक अमीर ज़मींदार के महल के पास एक ग़रीब, अनाथ बूढ़ी औरत की झोंपड़ी थी। ज़मींदार अपने महल का आँगन उस झोंपड़ी तक बढ़ाना चाहता था। उसने बूढ़ी औरत से बहुत कहा कि झोंपड़ी हटा ले, पर वह वहाँ बरसों से रहती थी। उसके पति और इकलौते बेटे की मृत्यु उसी झोंपड़ी में हुई थी और बहू भी एक पाँच साल की बच्ची (पोती) को छोड़कर चल बसी थी। अब बुढ़ापे में यही पोती उसका सहारा थी। पुराने दिन याद करके वह बहुत रोती थी।

Near a wealthy landlord's mansion stood the hut of a poor, orphaned old woman. The landlord wished to extend his mansion's courtyard up to that hut. He asked her many times to move away, but she had lived there for ages. Her beloved husband and only son had both died in that very hut, and her daughter-in-law too had passed away, leaving behind a five-year-old daughter. Now, in her old age, this granddaughter was her only support. Whenever she recalled her earlier days, she would weep bitterly with grief.

जब से बूढ़ी औरत को पता चला कि ज़मींदार उसकी झोंपड़ी लेना चाहता है, वह मरने जैसी हालत में हो गई थी। उसे उस झोंपड़ी से इतना लगाव था कि वह मरे बिना वहाँ से जाना ही नहीं चाहती थी। जब ज़मींदार की सारी कोशिशें असफल हुईं, तो उसने अपनी ताकत का इस्तेमाल किया - वकीलों को पैसे देकर अदालत से झोंपड़ी पर कब्ज़ा करवा लिया और बूढ़ी औरत को वहाँ से निकाल दिया। बेचारी अनाथ बूढ़ी औरत आस-पड़ोस में कहीं और जाकर रहने लगी।

From the moment she heard of her wealthy neighbour's wish, she felt as though half-dead. She had grown so attached to that hut that she refused to leave it except in death. When all the landlord's attempts failed, he resorted to his landlord's tactics - greasing the palms of hair-splitting lawyers, he seized the hut through the court and had the old woman evicted. Poor and orphaned as she already was, she went and settled somewhere nearby.

एक दिन ज़मींदार उस झोंपड़ी के आस-पास घूम रहे थे, तभी बूढ़ी औरत हाथ में एक टोकरी लेकर वहाँ आई। ज़मींदार ने उसे देखते ही नौकरों से कहा कि उसे भगा दो। पर वह विनती करते हुए बोली कि वह झोंपड़ी लेने नहीं आई है - उसकी पोती ने झोंपड़ी छूटने के बाद से खाना छोड़ दिया है और कहती है कि वह अपने घर में ही रोटी खाएगी। इसलिए बूढ़ी औरत सिर्फ एक टोकरी मिट्टी लेकर उसी का चूल्हा बनाना चाहती है, ताकि पोती को भरोसा हो जाए और वह खाना खाने लगे। ज़मींदार ने उसे मिट्टी ले जाने की इजाज़त दे दी।

The narrator explains that one day the landlord was strolling near the hut when the old woman arrived carrying a basket. Seeing her, he told his servants to send her away, but she pleaded and made clear she had not come to reclaim the hut. She explains that since losing it, her granddaughter had stopped eating and kept insisting on going back home to eat there. So she wants to take just one basket of soil from the hut, to build a hearth with it and convince her granddaughter that they have returned home. The landlord, hearing this, grants permission.

बूढ़ी औरत झोंपड़ी के अंदर गई तो उसे पुरानी यादें आ गईं और वह रोने लगी। उसने टोकरी मिट्टी से भरी और बाहर लाकर ज़मींदार से विनती की कि वे टोकरी को थोड़ा हाथ लगा दें ताकि वह उसे सिर पर रख सके। ज़मींदार पहले नाराज़ हुए, पर जब बूढ़ी औरत बार-बार हाथ जोड़ने और पैरों पर गिरने लगी, तो उनके मन में दया आ गई और वे खुद टोकरी उठाने आगे बढ़े। पर जब उन्होंने पूरी ताकत लगाकर भी टोकरी को उठाने की कोशिश की, तो वह एक इंच भी नहीं उठी। शर्मिंदा होकर उन्होंने कहा कि यह टोकरी वे नहीं उठा सकते।

The narrator explains that when the old woman went inside the hut, old memories flooded back to her, and tears streamed down her face. She filled her basket with soil and carried it out, then with folded hands begged the landlord to touch the basket so she could lift it onto her head. The landlord was angry at first, but as she kept folding her hands and falling at his feet, pity stirred in him, and he himself stepped forward to lift the basket. But the moment he took hold of it, he realised the task was beyond his strength - with all his might, the basket did not rise even an inch, and, ashamed, he had to admit he could not lift it.

यह सुनकर बूढ़ी औरत ने कहा, 'महाराज, गुस्सा न करें। जब आपसे एक टोकरी मिट्टी नहीं उठाई जा रही, तो इस पूरी झोंपड़ी में तो हज़ारों टोकरी मिट्टी है - उसका बोझ आप पूरी ज़िंदगी कैसे उठाएँगे?' यह सुनकर ज़मींदार को अपनी ग़लती समझ आ गई - वे धन के घमंड में अपना कर्तव्य भूल गए थे। उन्होंने पछतावा करते हुए बूढ़ी औरत से माफ़ी माँगी और उसकी झोंपड़ी वापस कर दी।

The old woman calmly explains to the landlord that if he cannot even lift one basket of soil, there are thousands of baskets' worth of soil in the whole hut - how then will he bear the weight of seizing it for his entire life? Hearing this symbolic argument, the landlord, who had been blinded by pride in his wealth and had forgotten his duty, has his eyes opened. The narrator explains that, repenting his misdeed, the landlord begs the old woman's forgiveness and returns her hut to her - and so the story ends with the restoration of justice. - Madhavrao Sapre
