नए मेहमान Naye Mehmaan (New Guests)

गर्मी के मौसम में रात के आठ बजे हैं और कमरा बहुत गरम है। विश्वनाथ कहते हैं कि इतनी गर्मी है कि घर भट्टी जैसा लग रहा है। उनकी पत्नी रेवती कहती है कि हवा बिल्कुल नहीं चल रही और उसका सिर दर्द से फट रहा है। विश्वनाथ पानी पी-पीकर भी प्यासे हैं। रेवती शिकायत करती है कि यह घर जेलखाने जैसा है। विश्वनाथ बताते हैं कि दो साल से मकान ढूँढ़ रहे हैं पर मिल नहीं रहा। पड़ोसी भी निर्दयी हैं जो अपनी खाली छत पर बच्चों को सोने नहीं देते।

The play opens on a scorching summer night, with Vishwanath thoroughly tormented by the heat of his closed house, calling it a furnace. The writer describes how his wife Revati complains too, of the stillness of the air and a splitting headache, while Vishwanath drinks water repeatedly but cannot quench his thirst. Both lament that the house feels like a prison. Vishwanath explains that he has been searching for a better house for two years without success, and Revati complains of their heartless neighbour, who refuses to let their children sleep on his empty terrace.

अचानक बाहर से कोई दरवाज़ा खटखटाता है। रेवती पूछती है कौन है, विश्वनाथ देखने जाते हैं। तभी दो अजनबी लोग - नन्हेमल और बाबूलाल - उनके साथ अंदर आते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि पैदल चलकर आए हैं इसलिए बहुत पसीना आ गया है। विश्वनाथ पूछते हैं कि वे कहाँ से आए हैं, तो नन्हेमल कहते हैं कि वे लाला संपतराम के चचेरे भाई हैं और विश्वनाथ के पास-पड़ोस के ही लगते हैं। हालाँकि विश्वनाथ को याद नहीं आता कि वह संपतराम को जानते भी हैं या नहीं।

Meanwhile someone knocks at the door from outside, and Vishwanath goes to check. The writer describes two strangers, Nanhemal and Babulal, entering along with him, explaining they came on foot and are drenched in sweat. When Vishwanath politely asks where they've come from, Nanhemal claims to be the cousin of a certain Lala Sampatram and insists they are close acquaintances of Vishwanath - though Vishwanath cannot recall even knowing Sampatram at all.

विश्वनाथ बच्चों से कहते हैं कि मेहमानों के लिए कुर्सी और खाट की व्यवस्था करो। रेवती पूछती है कि ये लोग कौन हैं, वे तो पहचान के नहीं लगते। विश्वनाथ कहते हैं कि उन्हें भी नहीं पता, कई बार पूछा पर मेहमान ठीक से जवाब नहीं देते। रेवती परेशान होती है कि अब खाना भी बनाना पड़ेगा, जबकि उसे नहीं पता कि ये मेहमान कौन हैं। विश्वनाथ कहते हैं कि जो भी हों, चूँकि आए हैं तो खाना खिलाना ही पड़ेगा। रेवती नाराज़ होकर कहती है कि मेहमान खिलाना तो पड़ेगा ही, पर विश्वनाथ पर भी झुंझलाती है।

Vishwanath asks the children to arrange a chair and a cot for the guests. The writer shows Revati asking, embarrassed, who these people even are, since they don't seem familiar at all - but Vishwanath doesn't know either, having asked several times without getting a clear answer. Revati grows anxious that they'll now have to cook without even knowing who the guests are, but Vishwanath insists that whoever they are, since they have come, feeding them is their duty. Revati is a little irritated by this but goes along with it.

विश्वनाथ पूछते हैं कि क्या वे कोई चिट्ठी लाए हैं, तो दोनों घबरा जाते हैं और कहते हैं कि चिट्ठी नहीं लाए। नन्हेमल बताते हैं कि संपतराम ने कृष्णा गली जाने को कहा था, पर विश्वनाथ बताते हैं कि यहाँ छह कृष्णा गलियाँ हैं। पूछने पर पता चलता है कि उन्हें किसी 'कविराज' के यहाँ जाना था। विश्वनाथ का बेटा प्रमोद बताता है कि पास की गली में एक कविराज वैद्य रहते हैं। तब समझ आता है कि वे लोग असल में विश्वनाथ के यहाँ नहीं, बल्कि कविराज रामलाल वैद्य के यहाँ जाना चाहते थे - यानी वे गलत पते पर आ गए थे! मेहमान तुरंत खुश होकर सही पते पर जाने के लिए निकल पड़ते हैं।

When Vishwanath asks if they've brought any letter of introduction, both guests admit, flustered, that they haven't. Nanhemal explains that Sampatram had told them to go to Krishna Gali, but Vishwanath points out there are six Krishna Galis in the area. Further questioning reveals they were actually looking for someone called 'Kaviraj' (a physician). Vishwanath's son Pramod mentions that a Kaviraj vaidya lives in the next lane, and it dawns on everyone that the guests were never meant for Vishwanath's house at all - they had come to the wrong address, actually seeking Kaviraj Ramlal Vaidya! Overjoyed, the guests immediately set off for the correct address.

तभी नीचे से आवाज़ आती है कि कोई शिकायत कर रहा है कि मकान ढूँढ़ते-ढूँढ़ते आधी रात हो गई। यह सुनकर रेवती खुश हो जाती है - यह उसका भाई है! रेवती अपने भाई से गले मिलती है। भाई बताता है कि वह चार घंटे से मकान ढूँढ़ रहा था और उसने तार (टेलीग्राम) भी भेजा था, पर वह पहुँचा ही नहीं। रेवती तुरंत भाई की सेवा में जुट जाती है - पंखा करती है, बर्फ मँगवाती है और खाना बनाने की बात करती है। भाई मना करता है कि इस गर्मी में खाना न बनाओ, पर रेवती कहती है कि भाई को भूखा नहीं सुला सकती और खाना बनाने चली जाती है।

Just as the strangers leave, a voice is heard from below, grumbling about wandering half the night searching for the house. The writer describes Revati's delight upon hearing this - it's her own brother! They embrace, and the brother explains he has been searching for the house for four hours, and had sent a telegram that never arrived. Revati immediately springs into hospitality - fanning him, sending for ice, and preparing to cook. The brother protests against cooking in such heat, but Revati firmly insists she cannot let her brother sleep hungry, and goes off to prepare the meal - the play closes with this scene of genuine, heartfelt hospitality towards real family.
