स्वदेश Swadesh (My Own Country)

कवि कहते हैं कि जिस हृदय में अपने देश के लिए प्यार नहीं है, वह हृदय नहीं बल्कि पत्थर है। जिस व्यक्ति के जीवन में जीवित उत्साह (जोश) नहीं जगता, उसके जीने का कोई मतलब नहीं। जो समाज के साथ आगे नहीं बढ़ता, वह समाज का हिस्सा नहीं बन पाता। जिसने साहस छोड़ दिया, वह मंज़िल तक नहीं पहुँच पाएगा। जिससे अपनी जाति और समाज का भला नहीं हुआ, उसका भी भला नहीं होगा। जिसमें भावनाओं की धारा नहीं बहती, वह भी पत्थर जैसा ही है।

The poet says a heart without love for one's homeland is not a heart, but a stone. A life in which no living zeal is kindled has no meaning. One who cannot move along with society never truly becomes part of it. One who has abandoned courage will never reach the far shore. One who has not uplifted their community will not themselves be uplifted. One not filled with a flow of feeling - that too is a heart of stone, empty of love for one's homeland.

कवि आगे मातृभूमि की तारीफ करते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि यह वही मिट्टी है जिसमें हम उगे और बढ़े, जिसमें हमें अन्न और पानी मिला। इसी भूमि पर हमारे माता-पिता और भाई-बंधु हैं, और हम इसके राजा-रानी जैसे हैं। इस भूमि ने अपने खजाने खोल दिए हैं और अनोखे नए रत्न दिए हैं। जो इस भूमि के लिए पिघल नहीं जाता, वह तो धरती पर बोझ के समान है।

The poet then describes the richness of the motherland. He says this is the soil in which we grew and flourished, where we found food and water. In this land are our parents and kin, and we are like its kings and queens. The poet explains that this land has opened its treasures and given rare, matchless jewels - jewels for which even the wise perish and the whole world is besotted. Finally he says one whose heart does not melt for this land is merely a burden upon the earth, their life meaningless.

अंत में कवि कहते हैं कि एक दिन मृत्यु तो आनी ही है, यह निश्चित सच है। काल का दीपक हमेशा जलता रहता है और पतंगों की तरह उस पर जलना नियति है। कवि कहते हैं कि सब कुछ हमारे अपने हाथों में है - हमारे पास तोप और तलवार दोनों हैं। इसलिए, जिस हृदय में स्वदेश का प्रेम नहीं है, वह हृदय नहीं बल्कि पत्थर है।

In the final stanza the poet speaks of the certainty of death and of duty. He says it is certain, beyond all doubt, that one day life must depart - death is inevitable. The lamp of time always burns, and it is the fate of moths to burn upon its flame. The poet concludes that everything lies in our own hands - we possess both cannon and sword, meaning the strength to defend our country. Therefore, he repeats, a heart with no love for one's homeland is not a true heart but a stone.
