حج اکبر Hajj-e-Akbar (The Greater Hajj)

मुंशी साबिर हुसैन की आमदनी कम और ख़र्च ज़्यादा था, फिर भी अपने इकलौते बच्चे की परवरिश के लिए उन्होंने एक दायी (दूध पिलाने वाली) रखने का फ़ैसला किया। तीन रुपये माहवार पर अब्बासी नाम की एक बूढ़ी, ग़रीब औरत यह काम करने आ गई। अब्बासी का अपना एक बेटा भी था, नसीर, जिसे वह अपने साथ नहीं ला सकती थी - अपना दूध और अपनी देखभाल उसे मालिक के बच्चे की परवरिश में देनी पड़ती थी।

Munshi Sabir Hussain's income was small and expenses many, yet for the sake of his only child he decided to hire a wet-nurse. An old, poor woman named Abbasi came to do this work for three rupees a month. Abbasi had a son of her own, Naseer, whom she could not bring with her - her milk and her care now had to go to her master's child instead.

नसीर कभी-कभार अपनी माँ से मिलने घर आता, मगर साबिर हुसैन की बीवी शाकिरा को यह पसंद नहीं था - उसे डर था कि नसीर की मौजूदगी अब्बासी का ध्यान उसके अपने बच्चे से हटा देगी। शाकिरा अक्सर अब्बासी और नसीर के साथ सख़्ती से पेश आती और उसे धमकाती। इस तरह नसीर अपनी ही माँ के दूध और प्यार से महरूम रहकर, नज़रअंदाज़ होकर बड़ा होने लगा।

Naseer would occasionally come to the house to see his mother, but Sabir Hussain's wife Shakira did not like it - she feared Naseer's presence would draw Abbasi's attention away from her own child. Shakira often treated Abbasi and Naseer harshly and threatened them. In this way Naseer grew up neglected, deprived of his own mother's milk and affection.

आख़िरकार नसीर तेज़ बुख़ार में पड़ गया। हकीम की दवाएँ भी कुछ असर न दिखा सकीं। अब्बासी अपने बेटे की हालत देखकर बेहद बेचैन थी, मगर मालिक के घर के काम की वजह से वह उसकी पूरी देखभाल भी नहीं कर पा रही थी। साबिर हुसैन को शक हुआ कि शाकिरा की सख़्ती और बेरुख़ी ही नसीर की बिगड़ती हालत की असल वजह है, और उन्होंने अपनी बीवी से सख़्त सवाल-जवाब किए।

Eventually Naseer fell into a high fever. Even the hakim's medicines showed no effect. Abbasi was deeply distressed seeing her son's condition, yet because of her duties in her master's house she could not care for him fully either. Sabir Hussain suspected that Shakira's harshness and coldness were the real cause of Naseer's worsening state, and he questioned his wife sharply about it.

अब्बासी ने बरसों से हज पर जाने के लिए पैसे जोड़ रखे थे - यह उसकी सबसे बड़ी दिली ख़्वाहिश थी। नसीर की गंभीर हालत के बीच वह हज के सफ़र पर निकल पड़ी, शायद ग़म और मायूसी में, यह सोचकर कि अब उसके करने को कुछ बाक़ी नहीं रहा। मगर रास्ते में साबिर हुसैन उसे ढूँढते हुए पहुँचे और उसे वापस लौटने के लिए मनाने लगे - नसीर को अभी उसकी माँ की ज़रूरत थी।

Abbasi had saved money for years to go on Hajj - it was her dearest wish. Amid Naseer's grave illness she set out on the pilgrimage anyway, perhaps in grief and despair, feeling there was nothing more she could do. But along the way Sabir Hussain came searching for her and pleaded with her to turn back - Naseer still needed his mother.

अब्बासी वापस लौट आई और अपने बेटे की तीमारदारी में जुट गई। एक हफ़्ते बाद नसीर सेहतयाब होकर आँगन में खेल रहा था। साबिर हुसैन ने मुस्कुराते हुए अब्बासी से कहा कि अगर वह हज पर चली जाती तो काबे की ज़ियारत का सवाब तो मिल जाता, मगर इस (नसीर की सेवा के) हज का सवाब कौन देता? साबिर हुसैन ने कहा - 'इसे किसी ने इससे ज़्यादा सवाब बता दिया - इस हज का नाम حج اکبر (हज-ए-अकबर, सबसे बड़ा हज) है।'

Abbasi returned and threw herself into nursing her son. A week later Naseer had recovered and was playing in the courtyard. Sabir Hussain said to Abbasi, smiling, that had she gone on Hajj she would have earned the merit of visiting the Ka'aba, but who would reward her for this Hajj (of caring for Naseer)? Sabir Hussain said: 'Someone has told me this one carries even greater merit - the name of this Hajj is Hajj-e-Akbar, the Greatest Hajj.'
