भावार्थ: वह देखो सूरज डूब गया, अँधेरे का निशाँ लहराने लगा। मद्धम बादल से चाँद चाँदनी के वरक़ बिखराने लगा। मैदान की साँवली सतह पर हल्की सी कालिख छा गई; बादल से थोड़ा उभरकर चाँद ने अपनी जबीं (माथा) चमकाई। देखो, फिर बादल में डूब गया, फिर ढँक गया; फिर वे किरणें बिखर गईं, अँधेरे का क़दम काँपने लगा। बादल में छुपा तो दिल में दर्द-सा छुपाया हुआ खोल दिया; आसमान में आया तो आसमान को नदी की तरह लहरा दिया। घटा सिमटी तो अँधेरे में चाँदी की कश्ती लेकर चला; हवा चली तो बादल के भँवर में ग़ोते खाने लगा। आख़िर में जोश पूछते हैं - क्या यह रौशनी और अँधेरे की कशमकश है? क्या यह क़ैद है, या आज़ादी है? इंसान की तरक़्क़ी और फ़ितरत का यही राज़ समझ में आने लगता है।

Meaning: see, the sun has set, and darkness's banner begins to wave. The moon, from behind a thin cloud, starts scattering sheets of moonlight. A faint blackness settles over the field's dusky surface; emerging slightly from the cloud, the moon lets its brow gleam. Look, it sinks into the cloud again, is veiled again; the rays scatter once more, and darkness's step begins to tremble. Hidden in the cloud, it lays bare a pain concealed in its heart; when it rises in the sky, it makes the sky ripple like a river. As the cloud-mass gathers into darkness, it sails forth like a silver boat; when the wind stirs, it spins in the cloud's whirlpool. In the end Josh asks - is this the struggle of light and darkness? Is it captivity, or is it freedom? The secret of human progress and of nature itself begins to become clear through this very play.
