About the author
A ghazal by Khwaja Mir Dard (1721-1785, Delhi) - he died in 1785, so it is firmly public domain. Dard was deeply linked to Sufi thought; his poetry repeatedly returns to the transience of life, self-effacement (fana), and weariness with the spectacle of the world.
Summary
Meaning: we took a few accusations upon ourselves; without truly fulfilling the purpose we came for, we left heedless (asleep). Whether this is life or some storm, we died at the hands of this very living. Friends, we have seen enough of this world's spectacle - you may stay, we are off to our true home. In this gathering we appeared composed like the Shaikh, yet we came with moist eyes and left with a soaked hem. Dard says: who really knows where these people came from, or where they went.
