اتحاد Ittehad (Unity)

भावार्थ: यह देस हिंदू और मुस्लिम तहज़ीबों का गुलदस्ता (शीराज़ा) है - यह बात सदियों पुरानी है, मगर आज भी उतनी ही ताज़ा है। इसकी तारीख़ घुलने-मिलने और तरकीबों (संयोजन) की एक प्रक्रिया है - दो आदर्शों का सम्बन्ध, दो तहज़ीबों का मिलन (जोग)। वह एक तड़प, एक लगन थी - कुछ खोने की, कुछ पाने की; एक तलब थी कि दो रूहें एक ही साँचे में ढल जाएँ।

Meaning: this land is a bouquet woven from Hindu and Muslim civilisations - centuries old, yet fresh even today. Its history is a process of dissolving and combining - a bond between two ideals, a union (jog) of two civilisations. There was a longing, a devotion - to lose something, to gain something; a desire for two souls to be cast into a single mould.

भावार्थ: सच्चाई देखने वालों की अच्छी नज़रों में इस तरह एक बिजली-सी जाग उठी, जैसे दो दिशाओं से आए दो उजालों की सीमाएँ मिल जाती हैं। जब हक़ (सत्य) की आवाज़ लहराकर भड़कती है तो एक तराना बन जाती है - यह आपसी रब्त, यह भीतरी जज़्बा ख़ुद एक पूरा ज़माना बन जाता है। चिश्ती (सूफ़ी संत) की सदा, हर नारा एक ही रंग में ढल जाता है; हर दिल पर कबीर और तुलसी के दोहों का जादू चल जाता है। यह फ़िक्र की दौलत रूहानी वहदत (एकता) की लगन बन जाती है - वही तानसेन का गीत बन जाती है, वही मीरा का भजन बन जाती है।

Meaning: thus a spark of awakening rose in the good eyes of those who see the truth, just as the boundaries of two lights coming from two directions merge into one. When the voice of truth surges and blazes, it becomes an anthem - this mutual bond, this inner passion, itself becomes an entire era. The Sufi call of Chishti, every slogan, melts into one same colour; the magic of Kabir's and Tulsi's couplets works upon every heart. This wealth of thought becomes a devotion to spiritual unity - it becomes Tansen's song, it becomes Mira's bhajan.

भावार्थ: जब दिल-दिल से हम-आहंग (एक-सुर) हुए, तौर-तरीक़े और अंदाज़ मिले, तो एक नई ज़बान ही तामीर हो गई - जब लफ़्ज़ों से लफ़्ज़ मिले। यह अदब की फ़िक्र की ख़ूबसूरती दुनिया-ए-अदब की जान बन गई - यही मीर का फ़न, चकबस्त की धुन, ग़ालिब का अमर दीवान बना। तहज़ीब की इस यक-जहती (एकता) के लिए उर्दू ज़बान ख़ुद एक गवाही काफ़ी है; और भी निशान मिलते हैं, बस थोड़ी-सी बसीरत (सूझ) चाहिए। ठुमरी की रसीली तानों से नग़मों की घटाएँ उठती हैं, जहाँ कहीं सितार छलकता है वहाँ अमीर ख़ुसरो की सदाएँ सुनाई देती हैं।

Meaning: when heart harmonised with heart, ways and styles merged, an entirely new language was built - when words met words. This beauty of literary thought became the very life of the world of letters - this became Meer's craft, Chakbast's melody, Ghalib's immortal collected verse. For this oneness of culture, the Urdu language itself is testimony enough; other signs are found too, one needs only a little insight. From thumri's sweet-toned melodies rise clouds of song; wherever a sitar overflows, the voice of Amir Khusro can be heard.

भावार्थ: ज़हनों की घुटन मिट जाएगी, इंसान की सोच जाग उठेगी - कल एक मुकम्मल वहदत (एकता) का बेबाक ख़याल जागेगा। नई वहदत की तामीर मानवता की नई बुनियादों पर होगी। ऐ वतन की धरती! एक बार हमारे वादों पर भरोसा तो कर। इस वहदत, इस यक-जहती की तामीर का दिन हम लाएँगे - सदियों के सुनहरे ख़्वाबों की ता'बीर (साकार होने) का दिन हम लाएँगे।

Meaning: the suffocation of minds will vanish, human thought will awaken - tomorrow a bold vision of complete unity will awaken. A new unity will be built on new foundations of humanity. O soil of my homeland! Trust our promises, just this once. We will bring the day when this unity, this oneness, is built - we will bring the day when the golden dreams of centuries are fulfilled.
