سندباد جہازی کا دوسرا سفر Sindbad Jahazi ka Dusra Safar (Sindbad the Sailor's Second Voyage)

पहले सफ़र की तमाम तकलीफ़ों के बाद सिंदबाद ने ठान लिया था कि अब कभी सफ़र नहीं करेगा और बग़दाद में आराम से ज़िंदगी गुज़ारेगा। कुछ महीने वह इसी तरह आराम से रहा, मगर फिर उसे नए-नए शहर देखने और सफ़र करने की तलब सताने लगी। वह ख़ुद से बार-बार कहता कि 'सफ़र करो, सफ़र में ही फ़ायदे हैं'। आख़िर उसने फिर सफ़र पर निकलने का इरादा कर लिया, अच्छी-अच्छी चीज़ें ख़रीदकर जहाज़ पर सवार हुआ, और उसके साथ कुछ दूसरे सौदागर भी थे।

After all the hardships of his first voyage, Sindbad had resolved never to travel again and to live comfortably in Baghdad. For a few months he lived this settled life, but then the urge to see new cities and travel again began to trouble him. He kept telling himself, 'travel, travel - there is benefit in travel.' Eventually he decided to set out again, bought fine goods, boarded a ship, and set off along with a group of other merchants.

जहाज़ कई दिनों तक समुंदर में सफ़र करता रहा, कभी-कभी किसी बंदरगाह पर रुकता। वहाँ अपना सामान महँगे दामों बेचते और वहीं से सस्ते दामों में अजीब-ग़रीब नई चीज़ें ख़रीद लेते, जिन्हें दूसरे शहर में ले जाकर भारी क़ीमत पर बेच देते - इस तरह सफ़र में सबको बहुत मुनाफ़ा हुआ। एक दिन जहाज़ एक हरे-भरे, ख़ूबसूरत जज़ीरे के किनारे रुका, जहाँ जगह-जगह फलदार दरख़्त लगे थे। सब लोग उतर पड़े और जज़ीरे की सैर करने लगे। जज़ीरा वीरान था, कोई इंसान नज़र नहीं आता था, मगर दरख़्त फलों से लदे हुए थे और सबने मिलकर फल तोड़कर खाए।

The ship sailed the seas for many days, stopping now and then at a port, where they sold their goods at high prices and bought cheap, unusual new items to carry to the next port and sell at a good profit - the voyage was proving very profitable for everyone. One day the ship anchored by the shore of a lush, green island dotted with fruit-laden trees. Everyone disembarked to explore the island. It was deserted, with no people in sight, but the trees were heavy with fruit, and they all picked and ate some.

सिंदबाद एक चश्मे के पास गया, पानी पिया और अकेला इधर-उधर घूमने निकल गया। इसी दौरान जहाज़ के कप्तान ने रवानगी का ऐलान कर दिया और जहाज़ चल पड़ा - मगर सिंदबाद के जंगल में दूर निकल जाने की वजह से किसी को उसकी ग़ैरमौजूदगी का पता ही न चला। जब सिंदबाद वापस लौटा तो न जहाज़ था, न कोई साथी। वह बेहद घबरा गया, अपनी नादानी पर अफ़सोस करने लगा और सोचने लगा कि पहले सफ़र की मुसीबतों के बाद उसने फिर सफ़र क्यों किया। दुआ माँगते हुए वह जज़ीरे में इधर-उधर भटकता रहा कि अचानक उसे दूर एक बड़ी, सफ़ेद, गुंबद जैसी चीज़ नज़र आई। पास जाकर देखा तो वह चिकनी दीवार वाला एक विशाल गोल गुंबद था, जिसमें कोई दरवाज़ा नहीं था। इतने में आसमान अचानक अंधेरा हो गया, जैसे शाम हो गई हो - सूरज ग़ायब हो गया, और उसे लगा कि यह कोई बारिश वाला बादल आ रहा है।

Sindbad went to a spring, drank some water, and wandered off alone. Meanwhile the ship's captain announced departure and the ship sailed off - but because Sindbad had gone deep into the woods, nobody noticed his absence. When Sindbad came back, there was no ship, no companion in sight. He panicked, regretted his carelessness, and wondered why he had set out to sea again after all the troubles of his first voyage. Praying, he wandered around the island until he suddenly spotted something large, white and dome-shaped in the distance. Walking up to it, he found a huge smooth-walled round dome with no door anywhere in it. Just then the sky suddenly darkened as if evening had fallen - the sun vanished, and he thought a rain-cloud must be approaching.

जल्द ही उसे मालूम हुआ कि वह बादल नहीं बल्कि एक बहुत बड़ा परिंदा था, जो उतरकर गुंबद पर बैठ गया और उसे अपने पंखों से ढाँप लिया। सिंदबाद को याद आया कि उसके साथी अक्सर 'सीमुर्ग़' नाम के एक अज़ीम, विशाल परिंदे का ज़िक्र किया करते थे - अब उसे यक़ीन हो गया कि यह सफ़ेद गुंबद असल में सीमुर्ग़ का अंडा था। उसने सोच-विचार कर एक तरकीब निकाली - अगली सुबह जब सीमुर्ग़ उड़ान भरेगा, वह अपनी पगड़ी से ख़ुद को उसके पंजे से बाँध लेगा, ताकि परिंदा उसे कहीं भी ले जाए तो कम-अज़-कम किसी आबाद जगह पहुँच सके। रात में उसने सीमुर्ग़ के दरख़्त जैसे मोटे पंजे तलाश किए और अपनी पगड़ी खोलकर ख़ुद को एक बड़े नाखून के साथ मज़बूती से बाँध लिया, और रातभर ख़ुदा से दुआ माँगता रहा। सुबह होते ही सीमुर्ग़ उड़ा और सिंदबाद भी उसके साथ हवा में उड़ चला - बेहद डरा हुआ, मगर बेबस।

Soon he realised it was not a cloud but an enormous bird, which landed and settled on top of the dome, covering it with its wings. Sindbad then remembered that his companions used to speak of a giant bird called the 'Simurgh' - and now he understood that the white dome was in fact the Simurgh's egg. Thinking it over, he devised a plan: the next morning, when the Simurgh took flight, he would tie himself to its leg with his turban, so that wherever the bird flew, he would at least reach some inhabited place. That night he found the bird's leg, thick as a tree trunk, unwound his turban and tied himself firmly to one of its huge claws, praying to God through the night. At dawn the Simurgh took off, and Sindbad flew with it, terrified but helpless to do anything else.

उड़ते-उड़ते सीमुर्ग़ नीचे उतरने लगा और सिंदबाद को नीचे एक वादी नज़र आई। ज़मीन के क़रीब आते ही उसने अपनी पगड़ी की गाँठ खोल दी और नीचे गिर पड़ा। उसने देखा कि सीमुर्ग़ ने एक बड़े अजगर को अपने पंजों में दबोचा और उड़ गया। अब चारों तरफ़ देखा तो ऊँचे पहाड़ों से घिरी वादी में बाहर निकलने का कोई रास्ता नज़र नहीं आया। मगर अचानक उसे ज़मीन पर चारों तरफ़ बेशुमार और बहुत बड़े-बड़े हीरे चमकते नज़र आए, जैसे उसने पहले कभी नहीं देखे थे। वह ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी हीरे इकट्ठा करके अपनी जेबों और गिरहबान में भरने लगा, मगर साथ ही उसे यह अफ़सोस भी हुआ कि इतने हीरे जमा करके भी अगर वह ख़ुद यहाँ से बाहर न निकल सका तो इनका क्या फ़ायदा। तभी उसे बड़े-बड़े परिंदों के पंखों की फड़फड़ाहट सुनाई दी और ऊपर देखा तो कई विशाल उक़ाब (गिद्ध जैसे शिकारी परिंदे) उसकी तरफ़ चारों तरफ़ से मंडराते हुए आ रहे थे।

As they flew on, the Simurgh began to descend, and Sindbad saw a valley below. As soon as it neared the ground, he undid the knot of his turban and fell down. He watched the Simurgh swoop, seize a huge python in its claws, and fly off. Looking around, he saw the valley was ringed by high mountains with no way out anywhere in sight. But suddenly he noticed the ground all around glittering with countless huge diamonds, bigger than he had ever seen. Delighted, he began gathering diamonds into his pockets and the folds of his robe - though he also felt a pang of regret that piling up diamonds would be useless if he could not get out of the valley alive. Just then he heard the flapping of great wings, and looking up he saw several huge eagles circling toward him from every side.

सिंदबाद को याद आया कि उसने पहले सुन रखा था कि सौदागर लोग इस हीरों की वादी से हीरे इकट्ठा करने के लिए एक अनोखी तरकीब अपनाते हैं - वे ऊपर से गोश्त के बड़े-बड़े टुकड़े वादी में फेंकते हैं, जिनसे हीरे चिपक जाते हैं; फिर उक़ाब गोश्त के उन टुकड़ों को उठाकर अपने घोंसलों में ले जाते हैं, और सौदागर शोर मचाकर उक़ाबों को घोंसलों से भगाकर हीरों से चिपका गोश्त निकाल लेते हैं। यह समझते ही सिंदबाद ने एक बड़ा गोश्त का टुकड़ा अपनी पगड़ी से अपनी पीठ पर बाँध लिया और हीरों से भरी ज़मीन पर सीधा लेट गया। कुछ ही देर में एक बहुत बड़ा उक़ाब उतरा, गोश्त के टुकड़े को (सिंदबाद समेत) अपने पंजों में दबोचकर उठा लिया और अपने घोंसले की तरफ़ उड़ चला - सिंदबाद भी उसके साथ हवा में उड़ता रहा।

Sindbad recalled having once heard that merchants use a clever trick to collect diamonds from this valley - they throw large chunks of meat down into it, diamonds stick to the meat, eagles carry the meat pieces up to their nests, and the merchants then shout and scare the eagles away from the nests to retrieve the diamond-studded meat. Realising this, Sindbad tied a large piece of meat to his back with his turban and lay flat on the diamond-covered ground. Before long a huge eagle swooped down, seized the meat (with Sindbad attached) in its talons, and flew off toward its nest, carrying Sindbad along with it through the air.

जब उक़ाब अपने घोंसले पर पहुँचा तो सिंदबाद ने फ़ौरन ख़ुद को गोश्त के टुकड़े से अलग कर लिया और ख़ुदा का शुक्र अदा किया। उसी वक़्त वहाँ एक सौदागर डंडा लेकर पहुँचा और उक़ाब को उड़ाने के लिए शोर मचाने लगा। सिंदबाद को देखकर वह हैरान रह गया और समझा कि यह कोई चोर है जो हीरे चुराने आया है। सिंदबाद ने उसे अपनी पूरी आपबीती सुनाई कि वह किस तरह गोश्त के टुकड़े से बँधकर यहाँ तक पहुँचा। उसने अपने जमा किए हुए हीरे भी सौदागर के सामने रख दिए और कहा कि जितने चाहो ले लो, बस मुझे खाना-पानी दो, वरना मैं यहीं मर जाऊँगा। सिंदबाद की बात सुनकर सौदागर बहुत ख़ुश हुआ, उसे अपनी झोंपड़ी में ले गया, अच्छी तरह उसकी ख़ातिरदारी की और उसके रहने-खाने का पूरा इंतज़ाम किया। फिर वह सिंदबाद को अपने साथ लेकर जहाज़ पर सवार हुआ, और उस मेहरबान सौदागर की बदौलत सिंदबाद इस तरह अपने सफ़र में बहुत सारा माल-ओ-दौलत कमाकर आख़िरकार अपने वतन लौट आया और ख़ुदा का लाख-लाख शुक्र अदा किया।

When the eagle reached its nest, Sindbad quickly freed himself from the meat and gave thanks to God. Just then a merchant arrived carrying a stick, shouting to drive the eagle away. Seeing Sindbad, he was astonished and assumed he was a thief who had come to steal diamonds. Sindbad told him his whole story - how he had reached this place tied to a chunk of meat. He laid out the diamonds he had gathered before the merchant and said, 'take as many as you like, just give me food and water, or I shall die here.' Hearing this, the merchant was overjoyed, took him to his lodging, looked after him well, and arranged for his food and stay. He then took Sindbad along and boarded a ship with him - and thanks to that kind merchant, Sindbad earned a great deal of wealth on this voyage and finally returned home, giving heartfelt thanks to God.
