نہ ہوئی قروَلی Na Hui Qarwali (The Qarwali That Never Turned Up)

मियाँ ख़ोजी और आज़ाद लखनऊ पहुँचे कई दिन हो चुके थे। लखनऊ के सैर-सपाटे और यहाँ के नवाबों की महफ़िलों ने उनका दिल ख़ूब बहलाया था। वे एक सराय में ठहरे हुए थे। ख़ोजी का घोड़ा तुर्की नस्ल का सफ़र-सवार था, और दोनों दोस्त अपने आगे के सफ़र की तैयारी में मसरूफ़ थे। ऐसे में एक रात एक अजीब वाक़िआ पेश आ गया।

Khoji Mian and Azad had already spent several days in Lucknow. The sights of the city and the gatherings of its nawabs had thoroughly entertained them. They were staying at a caravanserai. Khoji's horse was a fine Turkish travelling breed, and the two friends were busy preparing for the next leg of their journey. It was on one such night that a strange incident took place.

दिनभर की थकान से चूर ख़ोजी जैसे ही चारपाई पर लेटे, थोड़ी ही देर में उनकी आँख लग गई। मगर पिछले पहर से ही सराय के खटमलों की एक पूरी फ़ौज ने उन पर हमला बोल दिया। उनका बदन जोंकों की तरह खून चूसने लगा। ख़ोजी करवटें बदलते रहे, कभी एक तरफ़ खुजाते तो कभी दूसरी तरफ़, मगर नींद और खटमलों के हमले के बीच जूझते रहे। आख़िर उनकी आँख खुल गई, दीया रोशन हुआ तो देखा कि बिस्तर पर हज़ारों-लाखों खटमल रेंग रहे हैं। यह मंज़र देखकर ख़ोजी का चेहरा बेहद भयभीत और गुस्से से भर गया, और वह चीख़ें मारने लगे।

Worn out from the day's travel, Khoji had barely lain down on his cot when sleep overtook him. But from the last watch of the night, a whole army of bedbugs in the sarai's bedding attacked him, sucking at his skin like leeches. Khoji kept tossing and turning, scratching first on one side and then the other, caught between sleep and the bedbugs' assault. When he finally woke and lit a lamp, he saw thousands of bedbugs crawling over the bed. The sight left him frightened and furious, and he began to scream.

ख़ोजी चिल्ला उठे, 'अरे लाना मेरी क़रौली, लाना मेरी क़रौली! अभी इन खटमल गीदड़ों को मौत के घाट उतारता हूँ।' इतनी क़रौलियाँ भुनगों का चिपटी गीदड़ आ जाएँ तो क्या समझा - उन्होंने क्या समझा, कहाँ गई मेरी क़रौली! यह कहते हुए ख़ोजी ने हाथ में एक डंडा उठा लिया और यूँ धड़ाधड़ मारना शुरू किया कि सारी सराय के तमाम सोए हुए लोगों की नींद हराम हो गई। वह यह समझने लगे कि चोर आ गया है, हर तरफ़ चोर-चोर पकड़ना, जाने ना पाए का शोर मचने लगा।

Khoji cried out, 'Bring me my qarwali, bring me my qarwali! I'll finish off these bedbug jackals right now!' Muttering feverishly about where his knife had gone, he grabbed a stick instead and began thrashing about wildly, so loudly that it woke every sleeping soul in the sarai. Everyone assumed a thief had broken in, and cries of 'Thief, thief - catch him, don't let him get away!' rose from every corner.

सारी सराय में हड़बड़ी मच गई। लोग अंधेरे में बदहवास इधर-उधर भागने लगे, कोई अपने संदूक़ को सीने से भींच लेता तो कोई ख़ौफ़ से आँखें बंद किए एक कोने में दुबक जाता, कोई हाथ में लाठी लिए चोर को पकड़ने की कोशिश करता। इसी अफ़रा-तफ़री में एक कुम्हार (मिट्टी के बर्तन बनाने वाला) के बर्तन टूट-फूट गए, और वह भी शोर मचाने लगा। मियाँ ख़ोजी ख़ुद भी नहीं जानते थे कि यह शोशा किसने उड़ाया - वह न तो सोते थे, न ख़ुद खटमल का ज़िक्र किसी को बताते, बल्कि 'चोर, चोर' सुनकर ख़ुद भी चिल्लाने लगे थे।

Chaos spread through the whole sarai. People ran about in a panic in the dark - some clutched their trunks to their chests, some crouched in a corner with eyes shut in fear, and some grabbed sticks to try to catch the 'thief'. In the confusion a potter's earthenware pots were smashed, and he too joined the uproar. Khoji Mian himself did not know who had started the rumour - he was neither asleep nor telling anyone about his bedbugs; instead, hearing everyone shout 'thief, thief', he simply joined in shouting it himself.

इसी उधेड़बुन में एक कुम्हार ने देखा कि कोई बर्तनों पर से कूदकर भाग रहा है, तो उसने भी चीख़ना शुरू कर दिया। एक मुसाफ़िर, जो गहरी नींद में सोया हुआ था, इस शोर से जाग गया और डर के मारे उठकर भागने लगा। लोगों ने उसे ही चोर समझ लिया, पकड़ लिया और ख़ूब मार-पीट की - थप्पड़, घूँसे, लातें बरसाईं, यहाँ तक कि उसकी पगड़ी और कपड़े तक फट गए। अंधेरी रात में किसी को यह मालूम ही नहीं था कि असली माजरा क्या है, कौन चोर है और कौन बेगुनाह मुसाफ़िर।

In the middle of this frenzy a potter saw someone leaping over the pots and fleeing, and began shouting too. A traveller who had been fast asleep woke up in fright at the noise and got up to run. People mistook him for the thief, caught him, and beat him badly - slaps, punches, and kicks rained down until his turban and clothes were torn. In the pitch darkness nobody actually knew what was going on, or who the real thief was and who the innocent traveller was.

उधर आज़ाद को ख़बर मिली कि सराय में चोरी हुई है और किसी मुसाफ़िर की टोपी चुराई गई थी। एक कुम्हार का बर्तन-हंडा भी चोरी हो गया था, और ग़ुस्से में भरे लोग आते-जाते हर किसी से पूछताछ करने लगे। आज़ाद को इस बात पर यक़ीन नहीं आ रहा था कि उनका दोस्त ख़ोजी ऐसी चोरी कर सकता है, और वह ख़ुद भी लोगों की नज़रों में शक के घेरे में आ गए। तभी लोगों ने आज़ाद को भी पकड़ने की कोशिश की और उनसे उलझ पड़े; आज़ाद को भी हाथापाई और मार-कुटाई का सामना करना पड़ा।

Meanwhile Azad heard that a robbery had taken place in the sarai and that some traveller's cap, along with a potter's pot, had gone missing. Furious people began questioning everyone who passed by. Azad found it hard to believe that his friend Khoji could be behind any real theft, but even he ended up under suspicion and got caught up in the scuffle, facing blows and a scuffle of his own before the mess was sorted out.

आख़िरकार सुबह होने पर या हंगामा थमने पर असली बात सामने आई। मियाँ ख़ोजी को न तो कोई चोर मिला था, न पकड़ना जानते थे - वह तो सिर्फ़ खटमलों से बचने के लिए अपनी खोई हुई क़रौली माँग रहे थे! उनके एक 'लाना मेरी क़रौली' के शोर ने पूरी सराय को जगा दिया, बेगुनाह मुसाफ़िर को पिटवा दिया, कुम्हार के बर्तन तुड़वा दिए, और आज़ाद को भी मुसीबत में डाल दिया - जबकि हक़ीक़त में कोई चोर था ही नहीं। आज़ाद ने मुस्कुराते हुए ख़ोजी के इस मिज़ाज पर तंज़ किया, और यह वाक़िआ उनके सफ़र की एक दिलचस्प, हास्यप्रद याद बनकर रह गया।

Eventually, once morning came and the uproar settled, the truth emerged. Khoji Mian had never actually seen a thief, nor did he know how to catch one - he had simply been calling out for his lost qarwali to fight off the bedbugs! His single cry of 'Bring me my qarwali!' had woken the entire sarai, got an innocent traveller beaten, cost a potter his pots, and dragged Azad into trouble too - when in truth there had been no thief at all. Azad smiled and gently mocked Khoji's excitable nature, and the whole episode became just another amusing memory from their travels.
