ہندستان جنتِ نشان Hindustan Jannat Nishan (India, Marked as Paradise)

शादी के बाद मुसन्निफ़ा ने अपने शौहर से एक फ़रमाइश की थी कि चूँकि उन्हें सियाहत का बहुत शौक़ है, इसलिए दोनों इनशा-अल्लाह हिंदुस्तान के बाहर के मुल्कों को देखने से पहले ख़ुद हिंदुस्तान को अच्छी तरह देखेंगे, बल्कि बाहर के मुल्कों की सियाहत भी साथ-साथ करेंगे। गुज़श्ते चालीस बरसों के अरसे में उन्होंने हिंदुस्तान और बाहर, दोनों जगह ख़ूब सियाहत की। औरतों की हैसियत को उनके नसीब में सफ़र के मौक़े बहुत कम आते हैं - मगर मुसन्निफ़ा की सेहत की कमज़ोरी और उनके शौहर आबिद साहब की दिल्ली की गर्मी से चिढ़ की वजह से वे दोनों अक्सर दिल्ली से बाहर किसी पहाड़ी मक़ाम पर जाने का प्रोग्राम बनाते थे। उन ज़मानों में सफ़र के किराए बहुत कम होते थे, और पहाड़ पर ठहरने का इंतज़ाम भी किसी दोस्त की वसातत से मुफ़्त या बहुत कम पैसों में हो जाता था।

After marriage the author made one request of her husband - since she loved travel very much, they should, God willing, see India itself well before seeing foreign countries, though they would go abroad too alongside. Over the past forty years they travelled widely, both within India and outside it. For women, chances to travel come rarely in their fate - but because of the author's poor health and her husband Abid Sahab's dislike of Delhi's heat, the two of them often planned trips to some hill station outside Delhi. In those days travel fares were very low, and lodging in the hills was often arranged free or very cheaply through some friend's help.

इस तरह उन्होंने हिंदुस्तान के कई पहाड़ी मक़ामात की सैर की - शिमला, नैनी ताल और रानीखेत की सैर भी की, महाबलेश्वर में तीन दिन जाकर रहे। लेकिन सबसे बड़ा, सरसब्ज़-ओ-फ़ज़ा और दिलकश मक़ाम कश्मीर है। श्रीनगर और उसके आस-पास के इलाक़े में उन्होंने डल और नागिन झीलों की सैर की, मानसबल, यूसमर्ग, सोनमर्ग, अच्छाबल और गुलमर्ग के अजीब हुस्न-बख़्श चश्मे देखे। चश्मा-ए-शाही का मीठा पानी पिया, और उसके हुस्न से आँखों की तराओट पाई। डल के फिरते हुए शिकारे (हाउसबोट) एक अजीब चीज़ हैं, और उसके बाद डल दरिया के फूलों के तख़्ते और उनके ख़ुशबू वाले फूल भी देखे - सैकड़ों क़िस्म के फूल, और डल की मछलियों का हुजूम तैरना मुक़द्दस माना जाता है।

In this way they toured many hill stations of India - Shimla, Naini Tal and Ranikhet, and stayed three days in Mahabaleshwar. But the biggest, greenest and most attractive place is Kashmir. In Srinagar and its surroundings she toured Dal and Nagin lakes, saw Manasbal, Yousmarg, Sonmarg, Achhabal and Gulmarg's wonderfully beautiful springs. She drank the sweet water of Chashme Shahi, and felt her eyes refreshed by its beauty. Dal Lake's floating shikaras (houseboats) are a strange sight, and beyond that, Dal's floating flower gardens and their fragrant flowers were a sight too - hundreds of kinds of flowers, and the swarming of Dal's fish is considered sacred there.

एक वसीअ और हसीन बाग़ निशात और शालीमार बाग़ भी है। डल झील की गहराई की कोई हद नहीं है - इसी से दरिया-ए-जेहलम निकलता है। हज़ारों बरसों से करोड़ों टन पानी इसमें बहता रहता है, फिर भी दरिया-ए-जेहलम का पानी कभी कम नहीं होता। कश्मीर देखने में चुप-चाप ज़मीन जैसा लगता है, लेकिन मुसन्निफ़ा को इसकी सैर सबसे ज़्यादा पसंद है। पहाड़ों की शान-ओ-शौकत और सरसब्ज़ी, दरख़्तों और फूलों की शादाबी, और दरिया-ए-जेहलम के शफ़्फ़ाफ़ पानी की बे-मिसाल ख़ूबसूरती - जिसने इस छोटी-सी वादी को जन्नत-आसा बना दिया है। ऊँची पहाड़ियों पर जाइए तो शानदार और ख़ूबसूरत मंज़र नज़र आते हैं - चश्मों से रिसता हुआ पानी, बुलंदियों की चोटियों पर बर्फ़-पोश ऊँची पहाड़ियाँ और गहरी सरसब्ज़ वादियाँ, जो एक तरफ़ से दिलकश और दूसरी तरफ़ से गिरने के ख़ौफ़ से डरावनी भी मालूम होती हैं।

There is also a vast and beautiful garden - Nishat and Shalimar Bagh. Dal Lake's depth has no limit - from it flows the river Jhelum. For thousands of years, crores of tons of water have flowed into it continuously, yet the Jhelum's water is never diminished. Kashmir may look like a quiet, still land, but the author loves touring it most of all. The grandeur and greenery of the mountains, the freshness of the trees and flowers, and the incomparable beauty of the Jhelum's crystal-clear water - all of this made this small valley paradise-like. Climbing higher into the hills, splendid and beautiful views appear - water trickling from springs, snow-capped high peaks on the heights, and deep green valleys, which look enchanting from one side and, from the other, frightening too, for fear of falling.

पैदल चलकर चंदनवाड़ी पहुँचे तो वहाँ भी चश्मे पर जमी हुई बर्फ़ नज़र आई - रास्ते में बर्फ़ तोड़कर खाई, जिससे सर्दी जम-जमकर बढ़ती गई। गुलमर्ग में कई ऐसी सब्ज़ ज़मीनें (मर्ग) हैं - हज़ारों फ़ीट की बुलंदी पर सब्ज़ा उगा है, जिसका हुस्न-ओ-शादाबी का बड़ा ही दिलकश मंज़र पेश करती है। यहाँ से गुलमर्ग की एक ख़ूबसूरत वादी का चश्मा नज़र आता है, जिसका पानी एक चौड़े दरिया के बराबर बहता है, और ऐसा रंग-ओ-मंज़र दिखाता है कि 'सुब्हान तेरी क़ुदरत' बे-इख़्तियार मुँह से निकल जाता है। समंदर, चश्मा, दरिया, बहता पानी - ये मुसन्निफ़ा की कमज़ोरी है, गुलमर्ग के हुस्न ने उन्हें मसख़ूर कर दिया। गुलमर्ग से तीन मील टट्टू या पैदल चलकर पहाड़ पर सवार होकर खिलनमर्ग पहुँचते हैं। यहाँ गर्मियों में भी बर्फ़ मिलती है, और एक तरफ़ श्रीनगर की वादी और दूसरी तरफ़ हिमालिया की बर्फ़-पोश चोटियाँ दूर नज़र आती हैं। यहाँ की हवा इतनी हल्की है कि साँस लेना मीलों तक हल्का महसूस होता था, मगर उस वक़्त उन बातों की परवा किसे थी।

Walking up to Chandanwari, frozen ice was still visible at the spring - they broke and ate ice along the way, which built up a chill in the body. Gulmarg has several such green meadows (margs) - grass grows at a height of thousands of feet, presenting a most captivating scene of beauty and freshness. From here a spring in a beautiful Gulmarg valley comes into view, its water flowing wide as a full river, showing such colour and scenery that 'Glory to Your power' escapes one's mouth involuntarily. The sea, springs, rivers, flowing water - these are the author's weakness, and Gulmarg's beauty enchanted her completely. From Gulmarg, riding a pony or walking three miles up the mountain, one reaches Khilanmarg. Here snow is found even in summer, and on one side Srinagar's valley and on the other the Himalaya's snow-capped peaks are visible far away. The air here is so light that breathing felt easy for miles, but at that moment who cared for such details.

पहाड़ों के अलावा मैदानी इलाक़ों की सैर भी उन्होंने ख़ूब की - देहात और गाँव भी देखे, और शहरों में निसबतन कम रहे। पूना एक बार चंद दिन की सियाहत के लिए गए थे। मुग़रिबी घाट पर पहाड़ी नज़ारे भी थे, बसे हुए शहर के पास। सरसब्ज़ इलाक़ा देखने के क़ाबिल था। बंबई तो बंबई है - शुरूआत पूना में हुई, और बंबई और उसके आस-पास ख़ूब सैर की। बंबई का शोर-ओ-गुल मुसन्निफ़ा को बर्दाश्त नहीं हुआ। लेकिन बंबई का समंदर गेट-वे ऑफ़ इंडिया, चौपाटी, मरीन ड्राइव, बंदरगाह की क़ारियाँ - ये मुसन्निफ़ा को बहुत पसंद थे, और समंदर में डूबता हुआ सूरज तुलू और शाम के नज़ारे उनके ज़ेहन-ओ-नज़र को हमेशा बांधे रखते थे।

Besides the mountains, she toured the plains too - saw villages and countryside, and stayed relatively little in cities. Once they went to Pune for a few days' trip. There were hill views near the Western Ghats too, close to the settled city. The green area was worth seeing. As for Bombay - it began in Pune, and they toured Bombay and its surroundings well. Bombay's noise and pollution became hard for the author to bear. But Bombay's sea, the Gateway of India, Chowpatty, Marine Drive, harbour boats - these the author liked very much, and the sunrise and evening views of the sun setting into the sea always held her mind and gaze.

भोपाल आबिद साहब का वतन (जन्मस्थान) था। भोपाल गए तो सिर्फ़ शहर ही देखा, वहाँ की सियाहत ज़्यादा नहीं की। भोपाल से वापसी पर उन्होंने ताज (महल) देखा, चाँदनी रात में भी एक बार देखा, पहले भी किसी और सफ़र में ताज देख चुकी थीं। ताज महल का जो असर होता है, इंसान की मुहब्बत और अक़ीदत, और कारीगर का दिल किस तरह इसमें जाता है, यह बयान नहीं किया जा सकता, महसूस किया जा सकता है। इस जगह ने हुस्न और नफ़ासत में इंतिहा दिखाई है - ताज की जालियों की नफ़ासत और उसकी ख़राज-ए-अक़ीदत पेश करने वाले फ़न-कारों ने इसे कमाल दिखाया है। इस के गुंबद और मीनार ग़रज़ हर चीज़ को इस क़दर देख-सोच कर सजाया गया है कि इंसान का ख़याल है कि शायद ऐसी इमारत फिर नहीं होगी - यह इमारत ख़ुद अपनी मिसाल है।

Bhopal was Abid Sahab's hometown. When they went to Bhopal, they saw only the city, and did not tour much around it. On the way back from Bhopal she saw the Taj (Mahal), once even in moonlight, having already seen the Taj on an earlier trip too. What effect the Taj Mahal has, and how human love and devotion and a craftsman's heart go into it, cannot be described - it can only be felt. This place showed the utmost in beauty and refinement - the fineness of the Taj's latticework, and the artisans' devotion in creating it, show sheer mastery. Its dome and minarets - in short, everything - has been decorated with such deep thought that one feels perhaps such a building will never be made again; the building is itself its own example.

ताज के अलावा आगरा ने भी उन्हें हैरत में डाला - आगरा की तारीख़ी इमारतें और हैरत-अंगेज़ चीज़ें देखीं। आगरे का क़िला भी ख़ूब घूमा - क़िले का लाल रंग, छोटा-सा ताज-महल जैसा हिस्सा भी वहाँ है, और उसके पास बहुत दिलकश क़ुदरती मंज़र भी है। वहाँ एक शख़्स ने हज़ारों नवादरात जमा कर रखे थे, जिनमें हर एक अपने रंग में जवाब नहीं रखता - यह ख़ुद एक हैरत-अंगेज़ चीज़ है। वहाँ की मस्जिदें और इमाम बाड़ा भी देखने के क़ाबिल हैं। नौबत पहाड़ी से सारा शहर एक नज़र में नज़र आ जाता है।

Besides the Taj, Agra amazed her too - she saw Agra's historic buildings and astonishing things. She toured Agra's fort well too - the fort's red colour, a small Taj-Mahal-like portion there too, and very charming natural scenery near it. There, one person had gathered thousands of rare curiosities, each unmatched in its own kind - itself an astonishing collection. The mosques and Imam Bara there are also worth seeing. From Naubat hill the whole city comes into view at a glance.

हर इलाक़े की ज़िंदगी, रस्मों और रहन-सहन को उन्होंने देखा - यहाँ के लोगों के ख़ुलूस और अदब-नवाज़ी से वे बहुत मुतास्सिर हुईं। पुरानी उस्मानिया यूनिवर्सिटी कई बार जाकर देखी - इसकी क़दीम मरकज़ी इमारत इतनी ख़ूबसूरत, शानदार और नफ़ीस है कि उसे बयान करना मुश्किल है। इससे मालूम हुआ कि हैदराबाद का सबसे ख़ूबसूरत मंज़र चार मीनार है, जो हैदराबाद के आस-पास के सारे सफ़र में देखा। गोलकुंडा का क़िला भी ख़ूब घूमकर देखा और बहुत मरऊब (प्रभावित) हुईं। सालार जंग म्यूज़ियम की दुबारा ज़ियारत की, जो हमेशा याद रहेगी - एक शख़्स ने हज़ारों नवादरात जमा किए हैं, जिनमें हर एक अपने रंग में जवाब नहीं रखता, यह ख़ुद एक हैरत-अंगेज़ चीज़ है। वहाँ की मस्जिदें और इमाम बाड़ा भी देखने के क़ाबिल हैं, और नौबत पहाड़ी से सारा शहर नज़र आता है।

She saw the life, customs and way of living of every region - here she was deeply moved by the people's sincerity and hospitality. She visited the old Osmania University several times - its old central building is so beautiful, grand and refined that it is hard to describe. From this she learned that Hyderabad's most beautiful sight is the Charminar, which she saw throughout her travels around Hyderabad. She toured Golconda fort well too and was deeply impressed. She revisited the Salar Jung Museum, which she will always remember - one person had gathered thousands of curiosities, each unmatched in its own kind, itself an astonishing thing. The mosques and Imam Bara there are also worth seeing, and from Naubat hill the whole city comes into view.
