مہمان Mehmaan (The Guest)

ड्रामा जमील के घर के एक कमरे में शुरू होता है, जहाँ जमील बार-बार काग़ज़ पर हिसाब जोड़ रहा है और मुँह ही मुँह में रक़में गिन रहा है। उसकी बीवी ठरैया बार-बार पूछती है कि वह किस मुश्किल हिसाब में उलझा है। जमील बताता है कि उसकी तनख़्वाह 252 रुपये है, जबकि पहले से 300 रुपये का क़र्ज़ चढ़ा हुआ है - यों कुल मिलाकर 552 रुपये की रक़म बन जाती है, जिसे चुकाना उसके बस से बाहर लगता है। ठरैया हल्के-फुल्के अंदाज़ में कहती है कि ठीक है, आधा क़र्ज़ (532) अभी चुका दो, बाक़ी अल्लाह के फ़ज़ल से हो जाएगा। जमील इसे मज़ाक़ समझकर नाराज़ होता है, मगर ठरैया याद दिलाती है कि यह तो जमील की अपनी कही हुई बात है। दोनों के बीच हल्की-फुल्की नोक-झोंक होती है कि आगे किस तरह गुज़ारा किया जाए।

The play opens in a room of Jameel's house, where Jameel keeps adding up figures on paper and muttering sums under his breath. His wife Surayya keeps asking what difficult calculation has him so troubled. Jameel explains that his salary is 252 rupees, while he already carries 300 rupees of debt - together amounting to 552 rupees, a sum that feels impossible to repay. Surayya breezily suggests he simply pay off half the debt (532) now and trust that the rest will work out by God's grace. Jameel takes this as mockery and grows annoyed, but Surayya reminds him this is exactly the kind of thing he himself always says. A light bickering follows about how they are going to manage financially.

इसी बीच दरवाज़े पर आहट होती है। जमील नौकर बुद्धू को बाहर देखने भेजता है, मगर बाहर कोई नहीं मिलता - सिर्फ़ दरवाज़े पर एक पर्ची चिपकी हुई पाई जाती है, जिसमें एक बिल और एक तार (टेलीग्राम) का ज़िक्र है। पर्ची देखकर पता चलता है कि यह पानी के बिल की रक़म है - बारह से सोलह रुपये तक। जमील हैरान होकर कहता है कि यह तो बहुत ज़्यादा है, और ठरैया मज़ाक़ में उस पर बार-बार नहाने का इल्ज़ाम लगाती है; जमील सफ़ाई देता है कि वह तो बमुश्किल एक बार नहाता है। इसके बाद दोनों बिजली के बिल, डाक्टर के बिल वग़ैरा जमा होते क़र्ज़ों पर बातें करते हैं और जमील मज़ाक़ में कहता है कि अगर सारे बिल अभी अदा कर दिए तो पेट पर पत्थर बाँधना पड़ेगा।

Just then there is a knock at the door. Jameel sends the servant Buddhu to check, but no one is found outside - only a note stuck to the door mentioning a bill and a telegram. It turns out to be the water bill - somewhere between twelve and sixteen rupees. Jameel is astonished at the amount, and Surayya teasingly blames him for bathing too often; he protests that he barely manages to bathe once. The couple goes on to discuss the pile-up of electricity bills, doctor's bills and other debts, with Jameel joking that if all the bills were paid off right now, they would have to tie a stone to their bellies to survive.

पैसों की तंगी से परेशान होकर ठरैया एक तजवीज़ पेश करती है - अगर वे एक महीने की छुट्टी लेकर अपना घर बंद कर दें और किसी रिश्तेदार के घर 'मेहमान' बनकर रहें, तो न सिर्फ़ घर का ख़र्च बचेगा बल्कि जो थोड़ी-बहुत तनख़्वाह बचेगी उससे क़र्ज़ भी उतर जाएगा। जमील इस आइडिया से बहुत ख़ुश हो जाता है और इसे बहुत अच्छी तजवीज़ बताता है। सोच-विचार के बाद वे तय करते हैं कि अलीगढ़ में रहने वाली जमील की ख़ाला (मौसी) की बेटी नाज़ के घर मेहमान बनकर जाया जाए, क्योंकि नाज़ और उसका शौहर अकबर क़रीबी और मेहरबान रिश्तेदार हैं। जमील छुट्टी की दरख़्वास्त देने और तार भेजकर पहले से इत्तला करने की बात करता है।

Troubled by their money worries, Surayya proposes a plan - if they take a month's leave, shut up their own house, and go stay as 'guests' at a relative's home, they will save on household expenses, and whatever little salary is left over can go toward clearing the debt. Jameel is delighted with the idea and calls it an excellent plan. After some discussion, they decide to go and stay with Naaz - the daughter of Jameel's aunt (khala) living in Aligarh - since Naaz and her husband Akbar are close, warm-hearted relatives. Jameel talks of applying for leave and sending a telegram ahead to give them advance notice.

अभी जमील और ठरैया अपनी तजवीज़ पर सोच ही रहे होते हैं कि अचानक दरवाज़े पर सामान उतरने की आवाज़ आती है और नाज़ और उसका शौहर अकबर ख़ुद उन्हीं के घर मेहमान बनकर आ पहुँचते हैं! जमील और ठरैया हैरान रह जाते हैं, मगर बाहर से मेहमान-नवाज़ी का पूरा दिखावा करते हैं। अकबर बताता है कि उसका तबादला हो गया है और उसे दो महीने की छुट्टी मिली है, इसलिए वे बिना पहले इत्तला दिए सीधे मिलने चले आए। अंदर ही अंदर जमील और ठरैया परेशान होते हैं क्योंकि उनकी अपनी 'मेहमान बनने' की तजवीज़ अब उलटी पड़ती नज़र आती है - अब ख़र्च बचाने की बजाय उलटा दो मेहमानों का बोझ उनके सर आ पड़ा है।

Jameel and Surayya are still mulling over their own plan when suddenly there is the sound of luggage being unloaded at the door - and Naaz and her husband Akbar themselves arrive as guests at Jameel's house! Jameel and Surayya are stunned, but put on a full show of hospitality on the surface. Akbar explains that he has been transferred and granted two months' leave, so they decided to come straight over without any advance notice. Inwardly, Jameel and Surayya are dismayed, because their own plan to 'become guests' now seems to have backfired - instead of saving money, they suddenly have the burden of two guests on their own hands.

बातचीत के दौरान नाज़ अपनी एक 'बड़ी अच्छी तजवीज़' पेश करती है - वह बताती है कि वे अपना अलीगढ़ वाला घर किराए पर उठा दें और ख़ुद कुछ अरसे के लिए जमील और ठरैया के यहाँ मेहमान बनकर रहें, ताकि किराए की अच्छी-ख़ासी आमदनी हो जाए और उनकी बेटी की शादी के लिए पैसे जुड़ जाएँ। अकबर इसे बड़ी होशियार तजवीज़ बताता है। जमील और ठरैया के लिए यह सुनकर सन्नाटा जैसा छा जाता है - यह ऐन वही तजवीज़ है जो उन्होंने ख़ुद अपने लिए सोची थी, मगर अब यह उन्हीं के ख़िलाफ़ इस्तेमाल हो रही है। दोनों बाहर से मुस्कुराते हुए हामी भरते हैं, मगर अंदर ही अंदर परेशानी बढ़ती जाती है।

During the conversation, Naaz puts forward her own 'wonderful proposal' - she suggests they rent out their own house in Aligarh and instead stay as guests at Jameel and Surayya's place for a while, so the rental income can go toward their daughter's wedding fund. Akbar calls it a very clever plan. For Jameel and Surayya, hearing this feels like a thunderclap - it is exactly the same scheme they themselves had devised, now being turned against them. Outwardly the couple smiles and agrees, but inwardly their worry only deepens.

मेहमानों से छुटकारा पाने के लिए ठरैया एक तरकीब सोचती है - अलीगढ़ में रहने वाली असली ख़ाला के नाम से एक झूठा तार भेजा जाए, जिसमें लिखा हो कि ख़ाला बहुत बीमार हैं, ताकि नाज़ फ़ौरन अपनी माँ की तीमारदारी के लिए वापस चली जाए। जमील बुद्धू को तार का ख़ाली फ़ार्म लाने भेजता है। दोनों मिलकर जल्दी-जल्दी झूठे तार का मज़मून तैयार करते हैं ताकि नाज़ और अकबर को जल्द से जल्द रवाना किया जा सके, इससे पहले कि वे लंबे अरसे के लिए मेहमान बनकर ठहर जाएँ।

To get rid of the guests, Surayya comes up with a scheme - to send a fake telegram in the name of the real aunt (khala) living in Aligarh, saying she has fallen seriously ill, so that Naaz will rush back at once to nurse her mother. Jameel sends Buddhu to fetch a blank telegram form. The couple hurriedly drafts the wording of the fake telegram between them, hoping to send Naaz and Akbar off as quickly as possible - before they can settle in as long-term guests.

अभी जमील और ठरैया अपनी झूठी तार की तरकीब पर काम ही कर रहे होते हैं कि बाहर एक टांगे (घोड़ा-गाड़ी) की आवाज़ आती है और बुद्धू ख़बर लाता है कि कोई मेहमान टांगे से सामान उतार रही हैं। पता चलता है कि यह कोई और नहीं बल्कि ख़ुद असली ख़ाला (नाज़ की माँ) हैं, जो बग़ैर किसी इत्तला के अलीगढ़ से सीधे जमील के घर मेहमान बनकर आ पहुँची हैं! यह सुनते ही ठरैया सर पकड़कर बैठ जाती है और जमील बे-इख़्तियार ज़ोर से हँस पड़ता है - एक ऐसी हैरतअंगेज़, बे-क़ाबू हँसी जो देखने वाले को दौरा-सा लगे। नाज़ और अकबर उसे हैरानी से देखते हैं और पूछते हैं कि आख़िर बात क्या है। जमील बस इतना कह पाता है कि उनकी सारी तरकीबें उलटी पड़ गईं। पर्दा धीरे-धीरे गिर जाता है, और ड्रामा इसी मज़ाहिया, मायूसी भरे लम्हे पर ख़त्म होता है।

Jameel and Surayya are still working on their fake-telegram plan when the sound of a horse-cart (tanga) is heard outside, and Buddhu brings word that a guest is unloading luggage from it. It turns out to be none other than the real aunt herself (Naaz's mother), who has arrived unannounced straight from Aligarh to stay as a guest at Jameel's house! On hearing this, Surayya sits down clutching her head, while Jameel bursts into helpless, uncontrollable laughter - the kind that looks almost like a fit to onlookers. Naaz and Akbar stare at him in bewilderment, asking what on earth has happened. All Jameel can manage to say is that every single one of their schemes has backfired completely. The curtain slowly falls, and the play ends on this comic, deflating note.
