ماں کا خواب Maan ka Khwaab (Mother's Dream)

भावार्थ: एक रात मैं सोई तो मैंने यह ख़्वाब देखा, जिससे मेरी बेचैनी और बढ़ गई। मैंने देखा कि मैं कहीं जा रही हूँ, चारों तरफ़ अंधेरा है और रास्ता नहीं मिल रहा। डर के मारे मेरा रोआँ-रोआँ काँप रहा था, और दहशत से क़दम उठाना भी मुश्किल हो रहा था।

Meaning: one night as I slept, I saw this dream, and it only increased my restlessness. I saw that I was walking somewhere, it was dark all around and I could not find the path. Every hair on my body trembled with fear, and it had become almost impossible to take a step out of sheer dread.

भावार्थ: जब कुछ हिम्मत जुटा कर मैं आगे बढ़ी, तो देखा कि लड़कों की एक क़तार (लाइन) है। सब ने ज़ुमुर्रद (पन्ना/नीलम जैसे क़ीमती पत्थर के रंग) जैसी हरी पोशाक पहन रखी थी, और सब के हाथों में जलते हुए दिए थे। वे चुपचाप एक के पीछे एक चले जा रहे थे - ख़ुदा जाने उन्हें कहाँ जाना था।

Meaning: when, gathering some courage, I moved forward, I saw there was a line of boys. They all wore emerald-green clothing, and each carried a lit lamp in his hands. They walked on silently, one behind the other - God alone knew where they were headed.

भावार्थ: मैं इसी सोच में थी कि मुझे इस जमाअत (गिरोह) में अपना बेटा नज़र आ गया। वह सबसे पीछे था और तेज़ नहीं चल पा रहा था, उसके हाथ का दिया भी जल नहीं रहा था। मैंने उसे पहचान कर कहा - मेरी जान, मुझे छोड़ कर तुम कहाँ चले आए?

Meaning: while lost in this thought, I spotted my own son in that group. He was at the back and could not walk fast, and the lamp in his hands was not burning. Recognising him, I said - my dear one, where have you gone off to, leaving me behind?

भावार्थ: तुम्हारी जुदाई में मैं बेक़रार रहती हूँ, हर रोज़ आँसुओं के हार पिरोती हूँ। तुमने हमारी ज़रा भी परवा नहीं की, तुमने मुझे छोड़ दिया - ख़ूब वफ़ा निभाई तुमने!

Meaning: since your separation I remain restless, stringing garlands of tears every single day. You did not care for us at all - you went off and left me; fine loyalty you have shown me!

भावार्थ: जब बच्चे ने मेरी बेचैनी (पेच-ओ-ताब यानी दिल ही दिल में ग़म-ओ-ग़ुस्से से घुटना) देखी, तो उसने मुँह फेर कर यूँ जवाब दिया - मेरी जुदाई तुझे रुलाती है, मगर इसमें मेरी कोई भलाई नहीं है।

Meaning: when the child saw my inner anguish (silently smouldering with grief and hurt), he turned his face away and answered thus - my separation makes you weep, but there is no good in it for me.

भावार्थ: यह कह कर वह कुछ देर तक चुप रहा, फिर अपना दिया दिखाते हुए कहने लगा - क्या तू समझती है कि इसे क्या हो गया है? तेरे ही आँसुओं ने इसे बुझा दिया है।

Meaning: having said this, he remained silent for a while, then, showing his lamp again, he said - do you understand what has happened to it? It is your own tears that have put it out.
