کندن لال سہگل Kundan Lal Saigal

शरत चंद्र चटर्जी के नॉवेल 'बेनी बीनी' पर आधारित हिदायतकार (डायरेक्टर) पी-ए-आरतकी (आरत्ज़ी) की पहली फ़िल्म 'दुनिया न माने' बंगाली ज़बान में बनी थी। पी-एन-सरकार ने इसी फ़िल्म को हिंदुस्तानी ज़बान में दोबारा बनाने का फ़ैसला किया, क्योंकि इसकी माँ-बेटे की मुहब्बत वाली कहानी के मुख़्तलिफ़ पहलू ख़ासे मक़बूल हो चुके थे। नए थिएटर्स के जनरल मैनेजर बी-एन-सरकार ने इसकी हिदायतकारी का मुश्किल काम फिर आरत्ज़ी को ही सौंपा।

Director P.C. Aratki's first film 'Duniya Na Maane' (based on Sharat Chandra Chatterjee's novel) was made in Bengali. P.N. Sircar decided to remake the same film in Hindustani, since its story of parental love had already proven popular in different forms. B.N. Sircar, the general manager of New Theatres, again entrusted the difficult task of direction to Aratki.

आर-पी-बोराल जो कि म्यूज़िक की ज़िम्मेदारी सँभाल रहे थे, मर्द के मरकज़ी किरदार के लिए दूसरे एक्टरों के इंतिख़ाब से नाख़ुश थे और उन्होंने बहुत ज़ोर देकर के-एल-सहगल के लिए हीरो के रोल पर इसरार किया। मगर सहगल के लिए हिंदुस्तानी ज़बान में कोई मुनासिब मैच्योर हीरो का रोल दस्तयाब नहीं था, इसलिए इस फ़िल्म की शूटिंग शुरू नहीं हो पा रही थी - इस बीच सहगल अपना तआरुफ़ कराने आरत्ज़ी साहब से मिलने आए।

R.C. Boral, who was in charge of the music, was unhappy with the other actors chosen for the male lead and strongly insisted on K.L. Saigal for the hero's role. But no suitable, mature hero's role in Hindustani existed for Saigal, so shooting of this film could not begin - meanwhile, Saigal came to introduce himself to Mr. Aratki.

जब सहगल आरत्ज़ी साहब से मिले तो उनके चेहरे पर एक सवालिया निशान था - क्या यह हीरो के रोल के लायक़ है? नितिन बोस, जो हीरो की तलाश की ज़िम्मेदारी सँभाल रहे थे, ने भी सहगल के जवाब में अपनी बेचैनी ज़ाहिर की। इस उलझन के बीच सहगल के अल्हड़ मिज़ाज ने आरत्ज़ी साहब से कहा: 'आप वैसे बहुत आगे बढ़ चुके हैं' - यह सुनकर आरत्ज़ी साहब पहले नाराज़ हुए, मगर फिर कुछ देर बाद उनसे 'हीरो के फ़िल्म का मौक़ा' पहले से ही तय हो गया था।

When Saigal met Mr. Aratki, there was a question mark on Aratki's face - was this man fit for the hero's role? Nitin Bose, responsible for finding the hero, also showed unease at Saigal's response. Amid this confusion, Saigal, with his free-spirited manner, spoke a bold line - Aratki was annoyed at first, but soon after this a hero's role in the film had already been agreed for Saigal.

गाना गाने के लिए सहगल एकदम माहिर थे, मगर एक हीरो के रोल के लिए मुनासिब अदाकारी उनसे नहीं हो पा रही थी - इसी वजह से फ़िल्म की शूटिंग रुक-रुक कर चल रही थी। कैमरे के सामने आते ही सहगल घबरा जाते और उनके चेहरे पर ऐसी उलझन-सी झलक जाती जैसे नए वक़्त के हीरो की। इस तरह 'ری-ٹیک' (री-टेक) पर 'ری-ٹیک' होता गया - सात, आठ, आख़िरन नौवीं बार भी 'री-टेक' हुआ। तंतीन बोस अपना तवाज़ुन खो बैठे और चीख़ उठे कि 'शूटिंग कैंसिल कर दूँगा।' यह सुनकर सहगल स्टूडियो से बाहर निकल गए और रोने लगे।

Saigal was a complete master at singing, but suitable acting for a hero's role was not coming from him - so the film's shooting kept getting interrupted. The moment he faced the camera, Saigal grew nervous and a look of confusion crossed his face, unlike the confidence of an established hero. Retake followed retake - seven, eight, finally even a ninth retake. Nitin Bose lost his composure and shouted that he would cancel the shoot. On hearing this, Saigal walked out of the studio and began to weep.

आरत्ज़ी साहब उन्हें ढूँढते हुए बाहर आए और उन्हें हौसला दिया कि किसी ने भी मेरी नयोत्ज़र (नियुक्त) के इंतिख़ाब में कोई ग़लती नहीं की। सहगल की ख़ुद-ऐतमादी तमाम लोगों को मुतासिर करती थी, इसलिए तंतीन बोस बोले कि 'आओ, मेरे साथ रिहर्सल करो।' कुछ देर रिहर्सल करने के बाद तंतीन बोस ने डायरेक्टर को ख़बर भिजवाई कि वह चुपचाप अंदर आ जाएँ - सहगल तंतीन बोस से बोले, 'दादा, आप एक टेक ही उनसे आने से पहले क्यों नहीं ले लेते?'

Mr. Aratki came out searching for him and reassured him that no one had made a mistake in choosing him. Saigal's self-confidence impressed everyone, so Nitin Bose said, 'Come, rehearse with me.' After rehearsing for a while, Nitin Bose sent word for the director to come in quietly - Saigal said to Nitin Bose, 'Dada, why don't you take a shot before he even arrives?'

तंतीन बोस ने इस बात का कोई जवाब नहीं दिया, सिर्फ़ मुस्कराए और कैमरे के पीछे चले गए, क्योंकि उन्हें मालूम था कि डायरेक्टर साहब दरवाज़े के पीछे देख रहे हैं, मगर सहगल को इसका इल्म नहीं था। इस बार सहगल से कोई चूक नहीं हुई और डायरेक्टर दरवाज़े के पीछे से निकल आए और 'वेल डन' कहकर सहगल की पीठ थपथपाई और बोले, 'वेल डन, वेल डन'۔

Nitin Bose gave no answer to this, only smiled and went behind the camera, because he knew the director was watching from behind the door - though Saigal did not know this. This time Saigal made no mistake at all, and the director came out from behind the door, patted Saigal's back, and said, 'Well done, well done.'

सहगल हैरान नज़रों से डायरेक्टर को देखते रहे, जैसे उन्हें यक़ीन न हो कि यही आरत्ज़ी साहब हैं जो कुछ देर पहले नाराज़ होकर बाहर चले गए थे। आरत्ज़ी साहब नफ़्सियात के माहिर थे, सहगल की नफ़्सियाती कैफ़ियत उनसे छुपी नहीं थी - उन्होंने कहा: 'दरअसल तुम्हारी कमज़ोरी अहसास-ए-कमतरी है, जिसे तुम अपना 'अपना ऐतमाद' समझ बैठे हो।' फ़िल्म की शूटिंग शुरू हुई तो सहगल के दिल में एक डर पैदा हुआ था कि जब घरवालों को पता चलेगा कि वह फ़िल्मों में काम कर रहे हैं तो नाराज़ हो जाएँगे, इसलिए उन्होंने अपना फ़िल्मी नाम रखा - मगर आख़िर में उनका असली नाम 'कुंदन' ही पहचान लिया गया था।

Saigal kept looking at the director with astonished eyes, as if he could hardly believe this was the same Aratki who had walked out angrily a while earlier. Aratki, being skilled in psychology, understood Saigal's mental state and told him: 'Actually your weakness is a feeling of inferiority, which you had mistaken for your own self-confidence.' When shooting began Saigal had also feared that his family would be upset on learning he was working in films, so he adopted a screen name - but in the end his real name, 'Kundan', was recognised anyway.

आख़िरकार 16 जनवरी 1932 को इलाहाबाद के अल्हद सिनेमा घर में 'मोहब्बत के आँसू' रिलीज़ हुई - यह हिंदुस्तानी सिनेमा के फ़लक पर एक ऐसे सितारे का उभरना था जिसने हिंदुस्तानी सिनेमा को चौंका दिया। इस फ़िल्म में तक़रीबन दस गाने थे, मगर आज यह पूरी फ़िल्म मौजूद नहीं है और न ही उसके गानों की रिकॉर्डिंग या साउंड ट्रैक बचे हैं - अलबत्ता कुछ गानों के बोल अब भी मौजूद हैं और अंदाज़ा लगाया जाता है कि इनमें से कुछ गाने सहगल ने ही गाए थे। फ़िल्म फ़्लॉप हो गई, मगर सहगल की आवाज़ और उनकी अदाकारी के दम पर उन्हें ज़बरदस्त शोहरत मिली।

Finally on 16 January 1932, 'Mohabbat ke Aansoo' was released at Alfred Cinema in Allahabad - it was the rise of a star that startled Hindustani cinema. The film had about ten songs, but today the complete film no longer survives, nor do recordings or soundtracks of its songs - though the lyrics of some songs still exist, and it is guessed that some of these were sung by Saigal himself. The film flopped, but on the strength of his voice and acting, Saigal won tremendous fame.
