About the author
This nazm is by Hafeez Jalandhari, a celebrated Urdu poet who wrote Pakistan's national anthem and composed the long poem 'Shahnama-e-Islam'. He is also known for writing simple, beautiful, image-rich verse for children. 'Zameen ke Taare' is one such nazm, in which fireflies glowing in the darkness of night are called the stars of the earth.
Summary
भावार्थ: देखो, रात हो गई है और चारों तरफ़ अंधेरा छा गया है। बाग़ों में रहने वाले (पंछी वग़ैरह) सब अपने-अपने घोंसलों में जा बसे हैं।
Meaning: look, night has fallen and darkness has spread all around. Those who dwell in the gardens (the birds, etc.) have all settled into their nests for the night.
भावार्थ: हर दिशा में आसमान पर तारे चमक रहे हैं, और ज़मीन पर जो तारे हैं (यानी जुगनू), वे भी उन आसमानी तारों को देख (ताक) रहे हैं।
Meaning: in every direction the stars are twinkling in the sky, and the stars that exist on the earth (that is, the fireflies) are gazing back up at them.
भावार्थ: तुम पूछोगे कि ज़मीन के वे कौन से तारे हैं? आओ, हम तुम्हें वे प्यारे-प्यारे तारे दिखाएँ।
Meaning: you will ask - which are these stars of the earth? Come, let us show you those dear, lovely stars.
भावार्थ: देखो, ये बाग़ों में और बाड़ों में चमक रहे हैं। ये हर तरफ़ खेतों और झाड़ियों में कैसे उड़ रहे हैं!
Meaning: look, they are glowing in the gardens and along the hedges. See how they fly about everywhere - in the fields, in the bushes.
भावार्थ: ये नन्ही-नन्ही लालटेनें कैसे जगमगा रही हैं! ये कभी इस तरफ़ आ रही हैं, कभी उस तरफ़ जा रही हैं।
Meaning: how these tiny lanterns are glimmering! They come this way and then go that way, moving to and fro.
भावार्थ: क्या ये आग की चिंगारियाँ हैं या फुलझड़ी के फूल? या ये नन्हे-नन्हे कपड़े हैं जो रोशनी (नूर) से भरे हुए हैं?
Meaning: are these sparks of fire, or the sparkling blossoms of a fireworks-sparkler? Or are they tiny garments filled all over with light?
भावार्थ: क्या तुम इन्हें जानते हो? इनका नाम जुगनू है। इनका काम है अंधेरों को रोशन करना।
Meaning: do you know what these are? Their name is firefly. Their task is to light up the darkness.
भावार्थ: देखो, क़ुदरत (प्रकृति) के करिश्मे कितने ख़ूबसूरत हैं! क़ुदरत के इन करिश्मों को क़ुदरत ही अच्छी तरह जानती है।
Meaning: look how beautiful nature's workings are! Nature's own workings are best known to nature itself.
