اعتبار Aitbaar (Trust)

बाबा भारती के इलाक़े में एक बहुत ख़ूबसूरत घोड़ा था, जिसे वह प्यार से 'सुल्तान' कहकर बुलाते थे। वह उसे अपने हाथ से दाना खिलाते, अपने हाथ से नहलाते और उसकी हर देखभाल ख़ुद करते थे - किसी और पर उसे छोड़ना उन्हें गवारा नहीं था। सुल्तान की ख़ूबसूरती और बाबा भारती की उससे मुहब्बत की शोहरत पूरे इलाक़े में फैली हुई थी।

In Baba Bharti's area there was a very beautiful horse whom he lovingly called 'Sultan'. He fed it by hand, bathed it himself, and looked after every single one of its needs personally - he could not bear to leave it to anyone else. Sultan's beauty and Baba Bharti's love for him were famous throughout the region.

उसी इलाक़े में काहन नाम का एक मशहूर चोर भी रहता था, जिसका नाम सुनकर लोग थर-थर काँपते थे। जब काहन ने सुल्तान की शोहरत सुनी, तो उसके दिल में भी उसे पाने की चाहत जाग उठी। उसने घोड़े को हासिल करने की एक चाल सोची - वह मुहताज (ज़रूरतमंद) और लंगड़े आदमी का भेस बनाकर रास्ते के किनारे बैठ गया, जहाँ से बाबा भारती हर रोज़ सुल्तान पर सवार होकर गुज़रा करते थे।

In the same region lived a notorious thief named Kahan, whose very name made people tremble. When Kahan heard of Sultan's fame, a desire to possess the horse awoke in his heart. He devised a trick to get the horse - disguising himself as a needy, crippled man, he sat by the roadside where Baba Bharti rode past every day on Sultan.

जब बाबा भारती वहाँ से गुज़रे, तो कमज़ोर और रुँधी आवाज़ में काहन ने पुकारा - 'बाबा! ज़रा रुक जाओ, एक मुहताज की बात सुनते जाओ।' बाबा भारती रुक गए और पूछा कि तकलीफ़ क्या है। काहन ने कहा कि वह अपाहिज (चलने-फिरने में असमर्थ) है और उसे तीन मील दूर अपने भाई के पास जाना है, मगर वह पैदल नहीं चल सकता - अगर बाबा भारती उसे घोड़े पर बिठाकर वहाँ तक पहुँचा दें, तो वह उनका एहसान ज़िंदगी भर याद रखेगा।

When Baba Bharti passed by, Kahan called out in a weak, choked voice - 'Baba! Please stop a moment, hear out a needy man.' Baba Bharti stopped and asked what the trouble was. Kahan said he was crippled and unable to walk, and needed to reach his brother three miles away - if Baba Bharti could carry him there on the horse, he would remember the kindness for life.

बाबा भारती का दिल दर्द भरी आवाज़ सुनकर पसीज गया। उन्होंने घोड़े से उतरकर काहन को सुल्तान की पीठ पर बिठाया और ख़ुद लगाम पकड़कर धीरे-धीरे आगे बढ़ने लगे। अचानक काहन ने एक झटके से लगाम छीन ली, बाबा भारती को ज़ोर से धक्का दिया और घोड़े को एड़ लगाकर सरपट भगा ले गया। बाबा भारती हैरान रह गए - जिसे वह अपाहिज और लाचार समझ रहे थे, वह असल में मशहूर चोर काहन निकला।

Baba Bharti's heart melted on hearing the pain-filled voice. He got down from the horse, seated Kahan on Sultan's back, and himself began walking ahead slowly, holding the reins. Suddenly Kahan snatched the reins with a jerk, shoved Baba Bharti hard, and spurred the horse into a full gallop. Baba Bharti was stunned - the man he had taken for a helpless cripple turned out to be none other than the notorious thief Kahan.

बाबा भारती चोर के पीछे नहीं दौड़े, बल्कि ज़ोर से पुकार कर बोले - 'ठहरो!' काहन ने घोड़ा रोक लिया, यह सोचकर कि बाबा भारती घोड़ा वापस माँगेंगे। मगर बाबा भारती ने सिर्फ़ एक गुज़ारिश की - 'मुझे घोड़ा नहीं चाहिए, बस इतना वादा करो कि इस वाक़िये का किसी से ज़िक्र मत करना। अगर लोगों को मालूम हो गया कि एक ग़रीब, मुहताज दिखने वाले आदमी ने मुझसे यह छल किया, तो वे आइंदा किसी सच्चे ज़रूरतमंद की मदद करने से इनकार करने लगेंगे। मैं नहीं चाहता कि मेरी वजह से ग़रीबों पर से लोगों का भरोसा उठ जाए।'

Baba Bharti did not chase after the thief. Instead he called out loudly - 'Wait!' Kahan stopped the horse, thinking Baba Bharti would demand it back. But Baba Bharti made only one request - 'I do not want the horse back, just promise me you will never mention this to anyone. If people learn that a poor, needy-looking man tricked me like this, they will start refusing to help genuinely needy people in future. I do not want people to lose their trust in the poor because of me.'

बाबा भारती की यह बात सुनकर काहन हैरान रह गया - अपने घोड़े के ग़म से ज़्यादा उन्हें ग़रीबों की भलाई की फ़िक्र थी। काहन का दिल पछतावे से भर गया, मगर वह उसी वक़्त घोड़ा लौटाकर अपनी बदनामी मोल नहीं लेना चाहता था। कुछ दिनों बाद, एक अंधेरी रात में, काहन चुपके से बाबा भारती के अस्तबल तक पहुँचा और सुल्तान को धीरे-धीरे अंदर बाँधकर, आँसू बहाते हुए वहाँ से चला गया। सुबह जब बाबा भारती उठे, तो अपने प्यारे सुल्तान को अस्तबल में वापस पाकर हैरान और ख़ुश हो गए।

Hearing this from Baba Bharti, Kahan was astonished - Baba Bharti was more worried about the welfare of the poor than the loss of his own horse. Kahan's heart filled with remorse, though he did not want to bring disgrace on himself by returning the horse right away. A few days later, on a dark night, Kahan quietly made his way to Baba Bharti's stable, gently tied Sultan back inside, and left in tears. The next morning, when Baba Bharti woke up, he was astonished and overjoyed to find his beloved Sultan back in the stable.
