چڈو Chiddu

एक छोटा-सा लड़का था, उसका नाम चड्डू था। उसकी यह आदत थी कि जब भी वह किसी को कोई काम करते देखता, फ़ौरन कहता - 'मैं भी करूँगा, मैं भी करूँगा!' किसी को कुआँ खोदते देखता तो कहता 'मैं भी कुआँ भर दूँगा, बस एक ही दिन में!' किसी को दौड़ते देखता तो कहता 'मैं भी दौड़ूँगा।' कभी परिंदों को उड़ते देखता तो कहता 'मैं भी उड़ूँगा।'

There was a small boy named Chiddu. He had a habit: whenever he saw anyone doing any work, he would instantly say, 'I'll do that too, I'll do that too!' If he saw someone digging a well, he'd say he could fill it in just one day. If he saw someone running, he'd say he would run too. If he saw birds flying, he'd say he would fly too.

घर के पीछे कुछ दूर एक तालाब था, जहाँ चड्डू खेलने और मछलियों को पानी में तैरते देखने जाया करता था। वहाँ मछलियों को तैरते देखकर वह कहता - 'मैं भी तैरूँगा।' एक दिन ऐसा हुआ कि उसके माँ-बाप कहीं बाहर गए हुए थे, और बहन भी खेत के किसी काम में लगी हुई थी - घर में चड्डू बिल्कुल अकेला था। तभी एक सुंदर, सुनहरी ज़ीन वाला सफ़ेद घोड़ा, जैसा कभी न देखा हो, अचानक उसके सामने आ खड़ा हुआ।

Some distance behind the house was a pond, where Chiddu used to go to play and watch fish swim. Seeing the fish, he would say, 'I'll swim too.' One day it happened that his parents had gone out somewhere and his sister was busy with some work in the field - Chiddu was completely alone at home. Just then, a beautiful white horse he had never seen before, fitted with a handsome golden saddle, suddenly appeared right in front of him.

घोड़ा कुछ देर गर्दन झुकाए खड़ा रहा, फिर उसने अपने अगले पाँव मोड़कर चड्डू से कहा - 'आओ, बैठ जाओ।' चड्डू ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी उस पर सवार हो गया, और घोड़ा उठकर सुनहरी ज़ीन पर उसे सँभालते हुए दौड़ पड़ा। बाहर खेत में मौजूद उसकी बहन ने भाई को घोड़े पर सवार देख लिया और चिल्लाकर पुकारा - 'अरे चड्डू, तुम कहाँ जा रहे हो! हम तो दुनिया देखने जा रहे हैं' - यह कहते हुए घोड़ा एक ही छलाँग में उड़ता हुआ नज़र से ओझल हो गया।

The horse stood for a moment with its neck lowered, then bent its front legs and told Chiddu, 'Come, get on.' Chiddu happily climbed on, and the horse rose and galloped off with him on its golden saddle. His sister, out in the field, spotted her brother on the horse and shouted, 'Chiddu, where are you going!' - to which came the reply, 'We're off to see the world' - and with that the horse leapt away and vanished from sight.

पहले तो एक बड़े मैदान से गुज़रकर घोड़ा तेज़ी से दौड़ता हुआ ऊँचे-ऊँचे पहाड़ों पर चढ़ गया, और दूसरी तरफ़ उतरकर घने जंगल में जा घुसा। खेतों में लहलहाती फ़सलें, हरे-भरे और नीले-लाल फूल पीछे छूट गए। जंगल भी ख़त्म हुआ तो एक और जंगल आ गया, जिसके पेड़ बहुत छोटे-छोटे और घने थे, जिसमें राह ढूँढना मुश्किल था - मगर घोड़े के लिए सब कुछ आसान था। फिर एक रेत की ऊँची दीवार आई, जिस पर भी घोड़ा चढ़ गया, और उसे पार करते ही सामने दूर तक फैला नीला समंदर नज़र आने लगा।

First the horse galloped fast across a wide plain, then climbed up high mountains, and coming down the other side plunged into a dense forest. Green, swaying fields and blue-red flowers fell behind them. As one forest ended another began, its trees small and thickly packed, hard to find a path through - but everything was easy for the horse. Then came a tall wall of desert sand, which the horse climbed too, and on crossing it a vast blue sea came into view stretching as far as the eye could see.

घोड़े ने चड्डू से कहा - 'अब मुझसे यहाँ से आगे नहीं चला जाता, बस मियाँ चड्डू, तुम उतरो!' चड्डू ने कहा - 'वाह! मैं तो आगे और आगे चलूँगा' और इतना कहकर ज़ोर से उसे उतार दिया। चड्डू रेत की दीवार से समंदर में लुढ़क गया। एक सुनहरी, लाल रंग की मछली तेज़ी से उसके पास आई, और उसके पैरों में अपना मुँह लगाकर उसे ऊपर उठा लिया। चड्डू ने पूछा 'क्या तुम मुझे सवारी कराओगी?' तो मछली बोली 'नहीं मियाँ, तुम भी तैरोगे, सवारी नहीं करोगे' - और यह कहते हुए ख़ुद तैरने का अच्छा तरीक़ा भी बता दिया।

The horse told Chiddu, 'I can't go any further from here, so, Master Chiddu, get down!' Chiddu said, 'Well, I'll go on and on!' and with that the horse tipped him off. Chiddu tumbled off the sand wall into the sea. A fast golden-red fish came up to him, took hold near his feet, and lifted him up. Chiddu asked if the fish would give him a ride; the fish replied, 'No, sir, you will swim too, not just ride' - and went on to show him a good way to swim.

मछली चड्डू को गहरे समंदर के तल तक ले गई, जहाँ सीपियाँ चाँदी जैसी चमकती थीं और अजीब-अजीब पेड़ थे, जैसे उसने पहले कभी न देखे हों। ऊँचे पानी में भरे पहाड़ देखकर चड्डू की आँखें भर आईं, और वह चीख़ पड़ा - 'बस, अब चलो!' तभी पानी से एक बड़ा-सा सफ़ेद परिंदा निकला, और चड्डू को उसने उठाकर अपनी पीठ पर ख़ूब फैलाकर बिठा लिया। परिंदे ने कहा - 'अब तो मेरे साथ हो, अब तो ऊपर आसमान में जाऊँगा और सूरज को दूसरी तरफ़ से देखूँगा।'

The fish took Chiddu to the depths of the sea, where shells shone like silver and strange trees stood that he had never seen before. Seeing underwater peaks looming, Chiddu's eyes filled with tears and he cried out, 'Enough, let's go now!' At that moment a great white bird rose out of the water, lifted Chiddu, and settled him spread wide upon its back. The bird said, 'Now you're with me - now I'll go up into the sky and see the sun from the other side.'

परिंदा ऊँचा उड़ता चला गया, रुकने का नाम ही न लेता था। उधर सूरज बराबर नीचा होता जाता था और आख़िरकार बिल्कुल ग़ायब हो गया। रात हो गई, ज़मीन से ऊपर उड़ते-उड़ते चड्डू और परिंदा चाँद और तारों की बस्ती में पहुँच गए। नन्हे-नन्हे चमकते तारों ने चड्डू को सलाम कहा। चड्डू ने अब घर लौटने और सोने की बात कही, मगर तारों ने कहा कि अभी आराम करने का वक़्त नहीं। एक काला बादल पास आया और चड्डू को अपनी गोद में ले लिया - बहुत नर्म, हलवे जैसी गुदगुदी गोद थी।

The bird flew higher and higher without any sign of stopping. The sun kept sinking lower until it disappeared completely. Night fell, and flying on above the earth, Chiddu and the bird reached the settlement of the moon and stars. Tiny twinkling stars greeted Chiddu. Chiddu now said he wanted to go home and sleep, but the stars said it wasn't yet time to rest. A black cloud drew near and took Chiddu into its lap - a very soft lap, as cushiony as halwa.

चड्डू कुछ उदास हो गया और बोला - 'यह तो मुझे मेरी माँ के आँसुओं जैसा लगता है।' बादल ने बताया कि हाँ, यह तेरी माँ के आँसू ही हैं - जब वह तुझे बहुत याद करके रोई थी, तो उसकी बूँदें बादल में जज़्ब हो गई थीं। यह सुनकर चड्डू रोने लगा और अपनी माँ के पास घर लौटने की ख़्वाहिश ज़ाहिर करने लगा। बादल यह सुनकर पिघल गया और सिसक-सिसक कर रोने लगा, फिर तेज़ी से नीचे की तरफ़ झुका और चड्डू को बिल्कुल सही जगह - चमेली के पेड़ के पास, उसकी माँ की गोद में उतार दिया। ठीक उसी वक़्त सूरज भी दूसरी तरफ़ से ऊपर निकल आया।

Chiddu grew a little sad and said, 'This feels like my mother's tears.' The cloud told him yes, these were indeed his mother's tears - when she had cried missing him badly, her teardrops had been absorbed into the cloud. Hearing this, Chiddu began to cry and expressed his wish to go home to his mother. Hearing this, the cloud melted and began sobbing too, then swooped down swiftly and set Chiddu down in exactly the right spot - near a jasmine creeper, right into his mother's lap. At that very moment the sun also rose again from the other side.

चमेली की टहनियों में छिपकर बैठे चड्डू का मुँह जब उसकी माँ ने देखा, तो उसने कुछ इस तरह मुस्कराकर देखा कि उसका सारा चेहरा उस मुस्कराहट से चमक उठा। यहीं कहानी ख़त्म होती है - एक बच्चे की उड़ती हुई कल्पना आख़िरकार माँ की गोद की गर्माहट में लौट आती है।

When his mother saw Chiddu's face peeping out from among the jasmine branches, she looked at him with such a smile that his whole face lit up with that same smile in return. Here the story ends - a child's soaring imagination finally comes home to the warmth of his mother's lap.
