فلسفی نوکر Falsafi Naukar (The Philosopher Servant)

एक बार का ज़िक्र है कि एक शख़्स अपने प्यारे और बहुत तेज़ रफ़्तार घोड़े पर सवार होकर किसी शहर की सराय (मुसाफ़िरख़ाने) में आ पहुँचा। उसके साथ उसका नौकर भी था। शाम के खाने से फ़ारिग़ होकर, सोते वक़्त मालिक ने अपने नौकर से कहा कि उसने सुना है इस शहर के चोर बड़े ही दिलेर और माहिर होते हैं, इसलिए नौकर एक काम करे - अपने पाँव फैलाकर सो जाए, ताकि मालिक अपने क़ीमती घोड़े की ख़ुद निगरानी कर सके।

Once, it so happened that a man riding his beloved, very fast horse arrived at a sarai (a travellers' inn) in some city. His servant was with him. After finishing the evening meal, as he lay down to sleep, the master told his servant that he had heard the thieves of this city were extremely bold and skilled - so the servant should do one thing: stretch out his legs and go to sleep, so that the master himself could keep watch over his precious horse.

नौकर ने अपने आक़ा की यह बात सुनकर जवाब दिया कि यह बड़ी नामुनासिब बात होगी अगर मालिक ख़ुद सारी रात जागें और नौकर आराम से सोए। उसने कहा कि मालिक बेफ़िक्र होकर आराम फ़रमाएँ, यह नाचीज़ नौकर ख़ुद सारी रात जागकर घोड़े की निगरानी और पासबानी करेगा और मालिक की तरफ़ से इत्मीनान रखे। नौकर की यह बात सुनकर मालिक इत्मीनान से सो गया।

Hearing this, the servant replied that it would be most improper for the master himself to stay awake all night while the servant slept comfortably. He said the master should rest easy - this humble servant himself would stay awake the whole night, keep watch over the horse, and the master could be at ease on that account. Hearing this, the master went to sleep contentedly.

एक पहर (रात के एक हिस्से) के बाद अचानक मालिक की आँख खुली और उसने नौकर से पूछा, 'कहो भई! क्या ख़बर है?' नौकर ने जवाब दिया कि वह इस वक़्त यह ग़लाम (बंदा) सोच रहा है कि अल्लाह तआला ने ज़मीन को पानी पर किस तरह ठहरा रखा है। यह अजीबोग़रीब जवाब सुनकर मालिक को डर हुआ कि कहीं नौकर इसी उधेड़बुन में मशग़ूल रहकर उनके क़ीमती घोड़े और सामान की तरफ़ से बेख़बर न हो जाए, और कोई चोर फ़ायदा उठाकर सब कुछ चुरा न ले जाए। नौकर ने बड़ी तसल्ली दी कि इसकी कोई मजाल नहीं, मालिक बेफ़िक्र होकर सो जाएँ।

After one watch of the night, the master suddenly woke and asked the servant, 'Well then! What's the news?' The servant answered that at that moment this humble servant was wondering how Allah had made the earth rest upon water. Hearing this strange answer, the master grew afraid that the servant, lost in this puzzle, might become careless about the precious horse and belongings, letting some thief take advantage and steal everything. The servant reassured him firmly that no such thing could happen, and that the master should rest easy and sleep.

आधी रात के बाद मालिक की आँख फिर खुली और उसने वही सवाल दोहराया। नौकर ने बताया कि अब वह इस फ़िक्र में है कि लंबी-चौड़ी ज़मीन बग़ैर आसान सतूनों के किस तरह खड़ी करके गाड़ दी गई है, और अगर वह ज़मीन की मिट्टी कहीं ग़ायब हो जाए तो क्या होगा। तीन पहर के बाद जब मालिक ने फिर आँख खोलकर पूछा, तो नौकर ने कहा कि अब वह सोच रहा है कि ऊँट के पेट में गोलियाँ (मल) कौन बाँधता है और पत्तों पर उस्तरा ख़ुद-ब-ख़ुद किस तरह तेज़ हो जाता है। हर बार मालिक बेचैन होकर पूछता कि नौकर घोड़ा चोरी होने से डरता है या नहीं, और हर बार नौकर बड़े इत्मीनान से जवाब देता कि मालिक फ़िक्र न करें, वह पूरी तरह ख़बरदार और होशियार है।

After midnight the master woke again and repeated the same question. The servant said he was now wondering how the vast, wide earth had been fixed standing without visible pillars, and what would happen if the earth's soil somewhere vanished. After three watches, when the master again opened his eyes and asked, the servant said he was now wondering who ties up the pellets inside a camel's stomach, and how a razor sharpens itself on leaves on its own. Each time the anxious master asked whether the servant was at all worried about the horse being stolen, and each time the servant calmly answered that the master need not worry - he was fully alert and careful.

आख़िरकार जब रात की सिर्फ़ एक चौथाई घड़ी (चार घड़ी) बाक़ी रह गई थी, मालिक ने एक बार फिर आँख खोलकर वही सवाल पूछा। इस बार नौकर ने बड़ी संजीदगी से जवाब दिया कि वह यह सोच रहा है कि आप का ग़ुलाम इस काम में नाकाम रहा - घोड़ा चोरी हो जाने के बाद उसकी ज़ीन (काठी) और लगाम-वग़ैरा को अपने सर पर रखकर आप को अपने सर पर लादकर कहाँ ले चले? यह ख़बर सुनते ही मालिक की सारी नींद उड़ गई, और उसने अपने इस बे-वक़ूफ़ नौकर को बहुत सख़्त-सुस्त सुनाई। घोड़ा चोरी हो जाने का उसे बेहद अफ़सोस था, लेकिन अब जब 'चिड़ियाँ चुग गईं खेत' - यानी नुक़सान हो चुका था - तो पछताने के सिवा कुछ नहीं बचा था।

Finally, when only a quarter watch (four ghadis) of the night remained, the master once more opened his eyes and asked the same question. This time the servant answered very solemnly that he was thinking his master's servant had failed at this task - now that the horse had been stolen, where should he carry its saddle and reins upon his own head for the master? Hearing this news, all the master's sleep vanished at once, and he scolded this foolish servant very harshly. He deeply regretted the horse being stolen, but now that 'the sparrows had already eaten the field' - meaning the damage was done - nothing remained to do but repent.
