دو گز زمین Do Gaz Zameen (Two Yards of Land)

बहुत साल पहले रूस के एक गाँव में नचूम नाम का एक किसान रहता था। उसे हमेशा यह ग़म खाए जाता था कि उसके पास ज़मीन इतनी नहीं है कि वह गाँव के किसी भी ज़मींदार की बराबरी कर सके। गाँव में एक बूढ़ी औरत ज़मींदारन थी, जिसके पास काफ़ी ज़मीन थी और वह उसे बेचना चाहती थी। नचूम ने अपने और गाँव के दूसरे लोगों की मदद से, अपनी हैसियत के मुताबिक़, उसकी ज़मीन का एक हिस्सा ख़रीद लिया। जल्द ही उसने कुछ और ज़मीन भी ख़रीद ली, मगर उसके दिल को इत्मीनान नहीं हुआ - वह हमेशा और ज़्यादा ज़मीन का मालिक बनने की ख़्वाहिश रखता।

Long ago, in a village in Russia, there lived a peasant named Nichum. He was always troubled by the thought that he did not own enough land to match any of the village's landowners. There was an old woman landowner in the village who wanted to sell off some of her land. With the help of the villagers, and according to what he could afford, Nichum bought a share of it. Soon he bought a bit more land too, but his heart was never satisfied - he always wished to own still more land.

एक दिन नचूम अपने घर के सहन में बैठा था कि वहाँ से एक मुसाफ़िर गुज़रा। नचूम ने उसे आवाज़ दी और पूछा कि वह कहाँ से आ रहा है। मुसाफ़िर ने बताया कि वह वालगा नदी के पार से आ रहा है, जहाँ एक नई बस्ती बस रही है और वहाँ बाशकर क़बीले के लोग मुफ़्त में ज़मीन दे रहे हैं - बल्कि जो चाहे वहाँ और ज़्यादा ज़मीन भी ख़रीद सकता है। यह सुनकर नचूम की मुराद बर आई और वह अपनी ज़मीन और मकान बेचकर वहाँ जाने के लिए तैयार हो गया। वहाँ पहुँचकर उसने सरकार से मिलकर और ज़मीन ख़रीदी, बूढ़ी औरत की बक़ाया रक़म भी अदा की, और नए लोगों से जल्द ही दोस्ती कर ली।

One day Nichum was sitting in his courtyard when a traveller passed by. He called out to him and asked where he was coming from. The traveller said he had come from beyond the Volga river, where a new settlement was being formed, and where the Bashkir tribe was giving away land free - in fact anyone who wished could buy still more land there. Hearing this, Nichum's heart's desire seemed within reach, and he sold his own land and house to move there. On arriving he bought more land through the local officials, paid off the old landowner's remaining dues, and quickly made friends with the new settlers.

एक ताजिर ने नचूम को बताया कि यहाँ से दूर बाशकरों के इलाक़े में ज़मीन बहुत सस्ती है। यह सुनकर नचूम एक नौकर को लेकर बाशकरों की तरफ़ रवाना हुआ। सात दिन और सात रातों के सफ़र के बाद वे बाशकरों की बस्ती पहुँचे। तोहफ़े पाकर बाशकर बहुत ख़ुश हुए और नचूम की ख़ूब मेहमान-नवाज़ी की। जब नचूम ने ज़मीन ख़रीदने की बात कही, तो उनके सरदार ने एक हैरान कर देने वाली शर्त रखी - एक दिन की क़ीमत सिर्फ़ एक हज़ार रूबल! सरदार ने समझाया कि नचूम एक दिन में जितनी ज़मीन के गिर्द चक्कर लगा सके, वह सारी ज़मीन उसकी हो जाएगी - बस शर्त यह है कि सूरज ढलने से पहले वह उसी जगह वापस पहुँच जाए, जहाँ से उसने चलना शुरू किया था। अगर वह वापस न पहुँच सका, तो सारी रक़म डूब जाएगी।

A merchant told Nichum that far from there, in the Bashkirs' territory, land was very cheap. Hearing this, Nichum set out for the Bashkirs' land with a servant. After seven days and seven nights of travel, they reached the Bashkir settlement. Pleased with the gifts he brought, the Bashkirs welcomed Nichum warmly. When Nichum raised the matter of buying land, their chief made a startling offer - the price for a whole day was just one thousand roubles! The chief explained that whatever land Nichum could walk around in a single day would become entirely his - the only condition being that he must return to his starting point before sunset. If he failed to return in time, the entire sum would be forfeited.

नचूम बहुत ख़ुश हुआ, यह सोचकर कि एक दिन में तो वह बहुत बड़ी ज़मीन के गिर्द चक्कर लगा सकता है। उसने फ़ौरन शर्त मान ली। रात को नचूम को ज़्यादा नींद नहीं आई, वह सुबह जल्दी उठा और सूरज निकलने से पहले ही सब लोग एक टीले पर पहुँच गए। सरदार ने नचूम से एक हज़ार रूबल लेकर अपनी टोपी में डाले और फिर ज़मीन पर रख दी - यही निशान था। सूरज निकलते ही नचूम ने चलना शुरू किया। शुरू में वह मुतवाज़िन रफ़्तार से चला, मगर जैसे-जैसे वह आगे बढ़ता गया, ज़मीन उसे उतनी ही ज़्यादा अच्छी और ज़रख़ेज़ नज़र आने लगी - और वह अपनी रफ़्तार बढ़ाता गया। लालच उस पर हावी हो गया और वह वापस मुड़ना ही भूल गया।

Nichum was overjoyed, thinking that in a single day he could walk around an enormous stretch of land. He agreed to the terms at once. That night he barely slept, and rose early - before sunrise everyone had already reached a mound. The chief took the thousand roubles from Nichum, placed them in his own cap, and set the cap down on the ground as the starting marker. The moment the sun rose, Nichum began to walk. At first he kept a steady pace, but the further he went, the more fertile and appealing the land around him seemed - so he kept quickening his stride. Greed took hold of him, and he simply forgot to turn back.

बहुत देर तक चलने के बाद उसके जिस्म में गर्मी आ गई और उसने अपनी वास्कट भी उतार दी, फिर भी उसे पसीना आता रहा। दोपहर तक सूरज काफ़ी ऊपर आ गया था और नचूम को एहसास हुआ कि अब वापसी का वक़्त हो चला है, मगर लालच में आकर वह बाईं तरफ़ मुड़ना ही भूल गया और आगे ही बढ़ता गया। जब आख़िरकार उसने पीछे मुड़कर देखा और अपनी दूरी का सही अंदाज़ा लगाया, तो उसे एहसास हुआ कि ज़मीन बहुत ज़्यादा ज़रख़ेज़ है, मगर सूरज ढलने में अब ज़्यादा वक़्त बाक़ी नहीं है। वह घबरा गया और भागते-दौड़ते वापस टीले की तरफ़ चल पड़ा। रास्ते में वह हाँफने लगा, उसकी साँस लोहार की धौंकनी की तरह चलने लगी, प्यास से हलक़ सूखने लगा, मगर वह रुक नहीं सकता था - इतनी बड़ी ज़मीन का मालिक बनने का ख़्वाब उसे रोकने ही नहीं दे रहा था।

After walking for a long time, his body had grown hot and he took off even his waistcoat, yet he kept sweating. By noon the sun had climbed quite high, and Nichum realised it was time to turn back, but in his greed he forgot to turn left and kept going further still. When he finally looked back and judged the distance properly, he realised the land was extremely fertile - but not much time was left before sunset. Panicking, he began running back towards the mound as fast as he could. Along the way he grew breathless, his breath rasping like a blacksmith's bellows, his throat parched with thirst, but he could not stop - the dream of owning such a vast stretch of land would not let him.

सूरज ढलने के बहुत क़रीब पहुँच गया था। जब वह किसी तरह टीले के क़रीब पहुँचा, तो लोग उसे हिम्मत बढ़ाते हुए 'और तेज़, और तेज़' चिल्ला रहे थे। सरदार की टोपी अब उसे साफ़ नज़र आ रही थी। जान तोड़कर दौड़ने के बाद भी उसे साँस लेना दुशवार हो रहा था, फिर भी वह ठोकरें खाता हुआ आगे बढ़ता रहा। आख़िरकार वह टीले तक पहुँच ही गया और सूरज अभी उधर ही था कि नचूम ने अपना हाथ आगे बढ़ाकर सरदार की टोपी की तरफ़ बढ़ा दिया। मगर ठीक उसी लम्हे वह ज़मीन पर गिर पड़ा - उसकी उँगलियाँ अभी भी टोपी की तरफ़ दूर तक बढ़ी हुई थीं। सूरज डूबने के साथ ही नचूम की ज़िंदगी का आफ़ताब भी हमेशा के लिए ग़ुरूब हो गया - उसके दिल की हरकत बंद हो चुकी थी। सरदार की टोपी और नचूम के बीच सिर्फ़ दो गज़ का फ़ासला रह गया था, और उसी जगह उसकी क़ब्र खोदकर नचूम को दफ़ना दिया गया। हर इंसान की तरह नचूम के हिस्से में भी बस दो गज़ ज़मीन ही आई।

The sun was now very close to setting. When he somehow neared the mound, people were shouting encouragement at him - 'faster, faster!' The chief's cap was now clearly visible to him. Even after running with all his remaining strength, he could barely breathe, yet he kept staggering forward. At last he reached the mound, and just as the sun still lingered there, Nichum stretched his hand out towards the chief's cap. But at that very moment he collapsed to the ground - his fingers still stretched out towards the cap. As the sun set, the sun of Nichum's own life also set forever - his heart had stopped beating. Only two yards separated the chief's cap from where Nichum lay, and it was on that very spot that his grave was dug and he was buried. Like every human being, Nichum too, in the end, received only two yards of land.
