ملمع کی انگوٹھی Mulamme ki Angoothi (The Gilded Ring)

भावार्थ: चाँदी की अंगूठी पर जो सोने की एक हल्की परत (मुलम्मा) चढ़ी थी, वह ओछी (छोटी सोच वाली) अंगूठी इतरा कर बड़ी-बड़ी बातें बोलने लगी। ऐ देखने वालो, तुम्हें इंसाफ़ से यह कहना है कि चाँदी की अंगूठी भी आख़िर गहनों में एक गहना ही है।

Meaning: the silver ring, on which a thin coating of gold had been laid, being petty by nature, began to strut and boast loudly. O onlookers, one must say fairly that the silver ring too is, after all, one ornament among ornaments.

भावार्थ: सोने की अंगूठी जवाब देती है - मैं चाँदी की अंगूठी के साथ नहीं रहूँगी, वह कुछ और है और मैं कुछ और, यह ज़िल्लत मैं नहीं सहूँगी। मैं ऊँची क़ौम (जाति) की हूँ, मेरा घराना बड़ा है; वह घटिया ज़ात की है, उसका कोई ठिकाना नहीं। मेरी सी मिठास (चाशनी) और मेरा सा रंग उसमें कहाँ! मोल और तोल में वह मेरे पासंग (बराबरी) के भी लायक़ नहीं। मुझ जैसी चमक-दमक उसमें नहीं है, और मुझे तो शक है कि वह चाँदी भी है या सिर्फ़ राँग (एक सस्ती धातु)।

Meaning: the gold ring replies - I will not stay in the company of the silver ring, she is one thing and I another, I will not bear this indignity. I am of a high lineage, my family is great; she is of a lowly caste, with no standing at all. Where is my sweetness, my colour, to be found in her? In worth and in weight she is not even fit to be compared with me. She has neither my sparkle nor my glow, and I even doubt whether she is silver at all, or merely cheap tin.

भावार्थ: यह सुनते ही चाँदी की अंगूठी भी जल-भुन गई (जल गई) और बोली - 'अरे वाह! मुलम्मे की अंगूठी के तेरे भी क्या छल-बल हैं! मेरी प्यारी, सोने के मुलम्मे पर इतना मत इतरा - दो दिन में उसकी सारी चमक-दमक उतर जाएगी। कुछ देर के लिए हक़ीक़त छुपा भी ली तो क्या हुआ, झूठों ने बच्चों को चिढ़ा भी दिया तो क्या हुआ। ऐ मूर्ख! कभी अपनी असलियत मत भूल - जब आँच (ताव) दी जाएगी, तो तेरा भी मुँह फ़क़ (पीला/बेरंग) पड़ जाएगा।'

Meaning: hearing this, the silver ring too flared up and said - 'Well now! Look at the tricks of a gilded ring! My dear, do not preen so much over your gold plating - within two days all its shine will wear off. What if the truth was hidden for a little while, what if liars managed to tease children for a while - so what? O fool, never forget your own true nature - when you are put to the test (the heat), your face too will turn pale.'

भावार्थ: जो सच्चा है, अगर उसकी जाँच भी की जाए तो उसकी इज़्ज़त और ही बढ़ती है। यह मशहूर कहावत है कि सच को कोई आँच (नुक़सान/डर) नहीं होती। खोटी (नक़ली) चीज़ का खरा (असली) बनकर निखरना अच्छा नहीं, और छोटे का बड़ा बनकर दिखना अच्छा नहीं।

Meaning: the honour of what is genuine only grows when it is put to the test. There is a well-known saying that truth suffers no harm from scrutiny. It is not good for something fake to shine forth pretending to be genuine, and it is not good for something small to swell up pretending to be big.
