برکھا رت Barkha Rut (The Rainy Season)

भावार्थ: गर्मी की तपन बुझाने वाली, सर्दी का पैग़ाम लाने वाली, वह बरसात सारे बरस की जान है - वह ख़ुदा की कैसी शान है, यह बरसात!

Meaning: the rain that douses the burning heat of summer, that brings the message of winter's approach - that rain is the life of the whole year. What a glory of God this rain is!

भावार्थ: बहुत दुआओं और सैकड़ों गुज़ारिशों के बाद बरसात आई है। वह आई तो जैसे सबकी जान में जान आ गई - वरना सब कुछ दिनों के मेहमान लग रहे थे (यानी सूखे से मर जाने वाले थे)। बाग़ों में मानो लूट पड़ी हुई थी और जंगल में जैसे आग लगी हो। लोमड़ियाँ ज़बान निकाले हाँफ रही थीं, लू से हिरन तक काले पड़ गए थे। चीतों को शिकार की सुध नहीं थी, हिरनों को क़तार बनाकर चलने की सुध नहीं थी। मवेशियों का बुरा हाल था, बैलों ने कंधा डाल दिया था (थककर हार मान ली थी), घोड़ों का घास-दाना छूट गया था - प्यास ने उन्हें कोड़े की तरह सताया था।

Meaning: the rain has come after many prayers and hundreds of pleas. When it finally came, life returned to everyone - otherwise all creatures seemed to be guests of only a few more days (about to perish from the drought). It was as if the gardens had been looted and the forest was on fire. Foxes panted with tongues hanging out, and deer had turned dark from the scorching hot wind (loo). Leopards had no thought for hunting, deer no thought of moving in formation. Cattle were in a pitiful state, oxen had drooped their shoulders in exhaustion, horses had lost interest in grass and grain - thirst lashed them like a whip.

भावार्थ: रास्तों में सवार और पैदल चलने वाले सब धूप की मार से बेचैन थे। पंखे से निकलने वाली हवा भी लू (बाद-ए-समूम) से भी बदतर लग रही थी। सुबह सात-आठ बजे से लेकर शाम ढलने तक हर जानदार पर धूप की सख़्त दस्तक थी। बाज़ार सब सुनसान पड़े थे, कहीं इंसान की शक्ल तक नज़र नहीं आती थी। जिन दुकानों का काम दिन-रात चलता था, उनके मालिक भी अब हाथ पर हाथ धरे (बेकार) बैठे थे।

Meaning: on the roads, both riders and those on foot were restless from the assault of the sun. Even the breeze from a fan felt worse than a scorching desert wind. From seven or eight in the morning until evening, every living creature felt the harsh knock of the sun. The markets lay utterly deserted - not a human face was to be seen anywhere. Shops that used to run day and night now sat with their owners idle, hands folded in their laps.

भावार्थ: बच्चों का हाल बेहाल हो गया था, उनके फूल जैसे गाल कुम्हला गए थे। वे बार-बार माँ को पुकारते थे और होंठों पर बार-बार ज़बान फेरते थे (प्यास से)। अगर कोई पानी लाकर देता भी, तो वे मुँह लगाकर पीने के बाद भी छोड़ना नहीं चाहते थे। सिर्फ़ बच्चे ही प्यास से बेचैन (मुज़्तर) नहीं थे, बड़ों का हाल तो उनसे भी बदतर था।

Meaning: the children were utterly wretched, their flower-like cheeks had wilted. They called out to their mothers again and again, running their tongues over their lips. Even when someone brought them water, they would not let go of it once they had put it to their lips. It was not only the children who were tormented by thirst - the state of the grown-ups was even worse than theirs.

भावार्थ: कल शाम तक तो यही हाल था, मगर कल रात से ही सब कुछ बदल गया है। बरसात का डंका बज उठा है, आसमान पर एक शोर बरपा है। बादल ज़मीन पर मानो फट पड़े हैं, गर्मी को डुबो दिया है। बिजली जब कभी कौंधती है तो आँखों में रौशनी सी भर जाती है। घनघोर घटाएँ छाई हुई हैं, मानो जन्नत की हवाएँ चल रही हों। जिधर भी नज़र जाती है वहाँ तक हरियाली है, इसमें ख़ुदा की क़ुदरत नज़र आती है। पहाड़ फूलों से लद गए हैं, दरख़्त दूल्हे की तरह सजे हुए लगते हैं, हर तरफ़ पानी से जल-थल भरा है और पूरा जंगल गूँज रहा है।

Meaning: until yesterday evening things were just as before, but since last night everything is different. The drum of the monsoon has begun to sound, a great commotion has broken out across the sky. The rain has burst upon the earth as if torn open, and it has drowned out the summer heat. Whenever lightning flashes, a glow seems to fill the eyes. Thick dark clouds have gathered, as though breezes from paradise itself were blowing. Wherever the eye turns there is greenery for miles, and in it one sees the hand of God's creation. The hills are strewn with flowers, the trees stand adorned like a bridegroom, ponds and lowlands everywhere are brimming with water, and the whole forest resounds with sound.

भावार्थ: पपीहा 'पियो-पियो' पुकार रहा है और मोर चारों तरफ़ चिंघाड़ रहे हैं। कोयल की कूक दिल को लुभाती है, मानो सीधे दिल में जा बैठती है। मेंढक जब बोलने पर आते हैं तो मानो पूरी दुनिया को सर पर उठा लेते हैं। बादल घर के आसमान पर छा गया है, और हर ज़बान पर ख़ुशी के बोल हैं। ऐ बरसात, दुनिया में तेरी बहुत चाह थी, सब तेरी राह देख रहे थे।

Meaning: the papiha bird cries 'piyo-piyo' and the peacocks call out on every side. The koel's coo delights the heart, as if it settles straight into it. When the frogs start croaking, it is as if they raise the whole world on their shoulders. Clouds have gathered over the sky above the house, and every tongue speaks words of joy. O rain, the world longed for you so much - everyone was watching the road for your arrival.

भावार्थ: ऐ बरसात, तूने बाग़-बग़ीचे को सुंदरता दी, खेती को ख़ुश-हाल कर दिया। तूने मोर को नाचना और कोयल को गाना जैसे फिर से सिखा दिया। नदियाँ तेरे बिना सिसक रही थीं और जंगल तेरी राह तक रहे थे। तूने नदियों में जान डाल दी और जंगलों को नई शान मिल गई। जिन पौधों को कल तक मवेशी चर रहे थे, वे अब मानो आसमान से बातें कर रहे हैं (इतने ऊँचे और हरे-भरे हो गए हैं)। जिन बाग़ों में कल तक धूल के बगूले उड़ते थे, वहाँ अब सैकड़ों झूले पड़ गए हैं। जिस ज़मीन पर कल रेत के ढेर थे, वहाँ अब बरसाती कीड़े (बहौटियाँ/इंद्रगोप) की लाली बिछी हुई है।

Meaning: O rain, you gave beauty to the garden, you made the crops flourish. You taught the peacock to dance again and the koel to sing. The rivers had been sobbing without you, and the forests had been watching the road for you. You breathed life back into the rivers, and the forests regained their splendour. Plants that only yesterday were being grazed by cattle now seem to converse with the sky, so tall and lush have they grown. Gardens where dust-storms once swirled are now filled with hundreds of swings. Land that was yesterday heaped with sand is now carpeted red with rain-insects (velvet mites).
