About the author
A nazm by Ismail Merathi (1844-1917, of Meerut). Merathi is known for writing nazms for children in simple, easy language; he also prepared several textbooks for children's education in Urdu. 'Garmi ka Mausam' is a well-known descriptive poem that portrays the heat of the summer season and the contrast between the lives of the poor and the rich, in plain everyday language.
Summary
भावार्थ: मई का महीना आ पहुँचा है। जब बारह बजते हैं तो सूरज सिर के ऊपर आ जाता है। तेज़ लू चलती है और झुलसा देने वाली तराक़े की धूप पड़ती है। लगता है यह ज़मीन नहीं बल्कि कोई जलता हुआ तवा है।
Meaning: the month of May has arrived. When it strikes twelve, the sun comes directly overhead. A hot loo wind blows and a scorching, blazing sunshine beats down. It feels as if this is not the earth but some burning griddle.
भावार्थ: सिर से एड़ी तक पसीना बह निकला है, पैरों के नीचे का साया भी मानो छिप गया है। तेज़ धूप ऐसे लिपटती है जैसे आग की लपट हो - पता नहीं यह कोई शोला (आग की लौ) है या पछुआ (पश्चिम से चलने वाली गर्म) हवा है।
Meaning: sweat has poured from head to heel, and even the shadow beneath one's feet seems to have hidden away. The fierce sunshine clings like a flame of fire - one cannot tell if it is a blaze or the hot pachhuaa wind.
भावार्थ: दरवाज़े और दीवारें गर्मी से तप रहे हैं, इंसान मछली की तरह तड़प रहे हैं (बेचैन हैं)। ग़रीबों के घर का हाल तो मत ही पूछो - वहाँ ज़मीन ही फ़र्श है और आसमान ही छत है।
Meaning: doors and walls are scorching with the heat, and human beings writhe about like a fish out of water. Do not even ask about the homes of the poor - for them the bare earth is the floor and the open sky is the roof.
भावार्थ: न पंखा है, न टट्टी (छप्पर/परदा) है, न कोई कमरा - बस मेहनत के बल पर बनी एक छोटी सी झोंपड़ी ही उनका सहारा है। अमीरों को उनकी हवेली मुबारक हो, मगर ग़रीबों का भी अल्लाह ही रखवाला और मालिक है।
Meaning: there is no fan, no screen, no proper room - only a tiny hut, the fruit of hard labour, is their shelter. May the rich be blessed with their mansions, but the poor too have Allah as their guardian and protector.
