پری کا وردان Pari ka Vardaan (The Fairy's Boon)

बहुत पुराने ज़माने की बात है। एक घने जंगल में एक लकड़हारा अपनी बीवी के साथ रहता था। उनकी एक छोटी-सी झोंपड़ी थी। आस-पास के बाक़ी लोग भी मेहनत करके अपना घर चलाते थे, मगर वे सब अमीर थे और ख़ुशहाल ज़िंदगी बसर करते थे। लकड़हारा और उसकी बीवी को अपनी ज़िंदगी चलाने के लिए दिन-रात काम करना पड़ता था, फिर भी वे बहुत ग़रीब ही रहे।

Long, long ago, in a dense forest, a woodcutter lived with his wife. They had a small hut. The other people nearby also earned their living through hard work, but they were all well-off and lived comfortable lives. The woodcutter and his wife had to work day and night just to get by, and yet they remained very poor.

एक दिन शाम को लकड़हारा आग के सामने बैठा था, उसके हाथ में उसकी कुल्हाड़ी थी। उसकी बीवी भी पास ही बैठी ऊन बुन रही थी। दोनों अपनी क़िस्मत की बातें कर रहे थे। बीवी ने कहा कि काश हम भी अमीर होते! लकड़हारे ने जवाब दिया कि अगर उसके पास वह सब कुछ होता जो उसकी बीवी चाहती है, तो वे भी अपने पड़ोसियों की तरह अच्छी ज़िंदगी गुज़ार सकते थे।

One evening the woodcutter sat by the fire with his axe in hand, while his wife sat nearby, knitting wool. The two were talking about their fate. The wife said how she wished they too were rich. The woodcutter replied that if he had everything his wife wanted, they too could live as well as their neighbours.

बीवी ने मज़ाक़ में कहा कि हमारी ऐसी क़िस्मत कहाँ कि हमें कोई परी मिल जाए! उसके यह अल्फ़ाज़ मुँह से निकलते ही एक बेहद ख़ूबसूरत परी उनके सामने आ खड़ी हुई। परी ने कहा, 'तुम मुझे याद कर रहे थे। मैं हाज़िर हूँ, तुम्हारी ख़िदमत करना चाहती हूँ। मैं वादा करती हूँ कि तुम तीन मर्तबा जो भी ख़्वाहिश करोगे, वह पूरी हो जाएगी।' यह कहकर परी ग़ायब हो गई। लकड़हारा और उसकी बीवी हैरान रह गए - जो बातें उन्होंने मज़ाक़ में कही थीं, वे सच हो गई थीं।

The wife said, half in jest, that they could hardly be lucky enough to meet a fairy. No sooner had she said these words than a strikingly beautiful fairy appeared before them. The fairy said, 'You were remembering me. I am here, and I wish to serve you. I promise that whatever three wishes you make will be granted.' Saying this, the fairy vanished. The woodcutter and his wife were astonished - the words they had spoken in jest had come true.

अब सवाल यह था कि तीन ख़्वाहिशों में क्या माँगा जाए। बीवी ने कहा कि अगर वह सोच-समझकर बताए तो बेहतर होगा, क्योंकि असल हक़ीक़त यह है कि दौलत ही किसी इंसान को बड़ा नहीं बनाती। लकड़हारे ने कहा कि दौलत भी कोई बुरी चीज़ नहीं, मगर सबसे ज़्यादा ज़रूरी है सेहत और लंबी उम्र की दुआ माँगना। बीवी को यह मंज़ूर न हुआ - उसने कहा कि अगर हम ग़रीब ही रहे तो लंबी उम्र किस काम की? परी आई है तो हमें अपनी बहुत-सी ख़्वाहिशों के लिए एक मौक़ा इस्तेमाल कर लेना चाहिए। लकड़हारे ने कहा ठीक है, मगर जल्दबाज़ी न करें, आराम से सोचकर फ़ैसला करें।

Now the question was what to ask for with the three wishes. The wife said it would be better to decide carefully, because the real truth is that wealth alone does not make a person great. The woodcutter said wealth was not a bad thing either, but what mattered most was to wish for health and a long life. The wife did not agree - she said what use was a long life if they stayed poor? Since a fairy had come, they should use the chance for the many things she wanted. The woodcutter agreed, but urged that they not be hasty and think it over calmly.

बीवी सोच-विचार में जल्दबाज़ी कर बैठी और बिना सोचे-समझे बोल पड़ी, 'काश अभी एक गरमागरम कबाब खाने को मिल जाए!' उसके मुँह से यह निकलते ही ठीक उनके सामने एक गरमागरम कबाब आ गया। लकड़हारे को यह देखकर बहुत ग़ुस्सा आया - उसने कहा, 'तुम कितनी बेवक़ूफ़ औरत हो, तुमने हमारी एक क़ीमती ख़्वाहिश सिर्फ़ एक कबाब पर बर्बाद कर दी! मैं तो सोच रहा था कि हम कितना कुछ माँग सकते थे, और तुमने यह किया - मेरी तो इच्छा है कि यह कबाब तुम्हारी नाक से ही चिपक जाए!' यह ग़ुस्से में कहते ही कबाब उड़कर सीधे उसकी बीवी की नाक से जा चिपका।

Hurrying her own thinking, the wife blurted out without pausing, 'I wish we had a hot kebab to eat right now!' No sooner had she said it than a hot kebab appeared right before them. The woodcutter was furious at this - he said, 'What a foolish woman you are, you have wasted one of our precious wishes on a mere kebab! I was thinking of all we could have asked for, and you did this - I wish that kebab would stick to your nose!' As soon as he said this in anger, the kebab flew up and stuck straight onto his wife's nose.

दोनों बहुत परेशान हो गए और एक-दूसरे को क़ुसूरवार ठहराने लगे। बीवी रोते हुए बोली कि अब सिर्फ़ एक ही ख़्वाहिश बची है, और उसे किसी भी क़ीमत पर इस्तेमाल करके यह कबाब नाक से हटाना ही होगा, वरना वह शर्म से मर जाएगी। आख़िरकार लकड़हारे ने अपनी आख़िरी ख़्वाहिश यही माँग ली कि कबाब उसकी बीवी की नाक से अलग होकर ज़मीन पर गिर जाए - और ऐसा ही हुआ। इस तरह उनकी तीनों ख़्वाहिशें बर्बाद हो गईं और वे जैसे पहले थे, वैसे ही ग़रीब रह गए। कहानी के आख़िर में यह बताया गया है कि परी ने उन्हें बेवक़ूफ़ बनाया, और यह सही ही हुआ - अगर वे जल्दी में इतनी बड़ी दौलत पा भी जाते तो शायद और ज़्यादा परेशानी में पड़ जाते। असल बात यह है कि ज़िंदगी जैसी भी है, उसी में संतोष करना चाहिए - अच्छा खाना मिले तो अच्छी बात है, मगर क़िस्मत ने जो कुछ दिया है, उसी पर राज़ी रहना चाहिए।

Both were deeply distressed and began blaming each other. The wife, in tears, said only one wish now remained, and it had to be used, whatever the cost, to remove the kebab from her nose - otherwise she would die of shame. In the end the woodcutter used their last wish asking that the kebab come off his wife's nose and fall to the ground - and so it did. In this way all three of their wishes were wasted, and they remained just as poor as before. The story closes by noting that the fairy had made fools of them, and rightly so - had they gained such wealth too hastily, they might well have fallen into even greater trouble. The real lesson is that whatever life is, one should be content with it - good food is welcome when it comes, but one should remain satisfied with whatever fate has given.
