عقل مند کسان Aqalmand Kisan (The Wise Farmer)

पुराने ज़माने में भारत में एक राजा राज करता था। वह बहुत रहमदिल था, और उसकी प्रजा उससे बेहद ख़ुश थी। राजा अक्सर अपनी प्रजा की हालत ख़ुद देखने के लिए भेस बदलकर महल से बाहर निकल जाता था। सब लोग उसकी इज़्ज़त करते थे। एक दिन घूमते-घामते राजा एक खेत के पास पहुँचा, जहाँ एक किसान काम कर रहा था।

Long ago in Bharat, a king ruled the land. He was very kind-hearted, and his subjects were happy under his rule. The king would often go out of the palace in disguise to see the real condition of his people for himself. Everyone respected him greatly. One day, while wandering about, the king came upon a field where a farmer was at work.

राजा उस किसान के खेत में पहुँचा। खेत में गेहूँ की बहुत अच्छी फ़सल लहलहा रही थी। यह देखकर राजा बहुत ख़ुश हुआ और किसान से पूछा कि वह इस खेत से कितना कमा लेता है। किसान ने जवाब दिया कि वह हर रोज़ एक रुपये के हिसाब से अपनी कमाई का बँटवारा करता है।

The king arrived at the farmer's field, where a fine crop of wheat stood tall and thriving. Delighted by the sight, the king asked the farmer how much he earned from this field. The farmer replied that he divided up his earnings on a daily basis, one rupee at a time.

राजा ने पूछा कि एक रुपये रोज़ाना का वह क्या करता है। किसान ने कहा, 'मैं उस एक रुपये में से एक रुपया क़र्ज़ देता हूँ, एक रुपया कुएँ में फेंक देता हूँ, एक क़र्ज़ उतारता हूँ, और एक ख़ैरात देता हूँ।' यह अजीब-सी बात सुनकर राजा हैरान रह गया - उसे किसान की बात की समझ नहीं आई।

The king then asked what the farmer did with that one rupee each day. The farmer answered, 'Out of that one rupee, I give one as a loan, throw one into a well, repay one as debt, and give one away as charity.' Hearing this strange statement, the king was puzzled - he could not make sense of what the farmer meant.

किसान ने समझाया - 'हुज़ूर, इसका मतलब यह है कि जो मैं अपने माँ-बाप पर ख़र्च करता हूँ, वह क़र्ज़ उतारना है; जो मैं अपनी बीवी पर ख़र्च करता हूँ, वह कुएँ में फेंकना है; जो मैं अपने बच्चों पर ख़र्च करता हूँ, वह क़र्ज़ देना है, क्योंकि जब वे बड़े होंगे तो बुढ़ापे में मेरी ख़िदमत करेंगे; और जो मैं मेहमानों व ज़रूरतमंदों पर ख़र्च करता हूँ, वह ख़ैरात है।' राजा यह जवाब सुनकर बहुत ख़ुश हुआ। उसने किसान को इनाम दिया और कहा कि वह यह बात किसी को न बताए, जब तक राजा ख़ुद एक महीने के अंदर दरबार में सबके सामने इसका जवाब न दे दे। किसान ने वादा कर लिया और राजा महल लौट गया।

The farmer explained - 'Sir, it means this: what I spend on my parents is repaying a debt; what I spend on my wife is throwing money in a well; what I spend on my children is giving a loan, because when they grow up they will serve and support me in my old age; and what I spend on guests and the needy is charity.' The king was delighted to hear this answer. He rewarded the farmer and told him to keep the meaning secret from everyone until the king himself worked it out and announced it before the whole court within a month. The farmer agreed, and the king returned to his palace.

अगले दिन राजा ने अपने दरबारियों को यह पहेली सुनाई, मगर कोई भी इसका मतलब नहीं बता सका। दरबार का एक चालाक वज़ीर था। उसने राजा से एक दिन की मोहलत माँगी और वादा किया कि वह जवाब ला देगा। वज़ीर सीधे उसी किसान के पास पहुँचा और उससे राज़ बताने को कहा, मगर किसान ने राजा से किया वादा याद दिलाकर मना कर दिया। वज़ीर ने ज़िद की तो किसान ने सोच-समझकर कहा कि अगर उसे कुछ अशर्फ़ियाँ (सोने के सिक्के) दी जाएँ, तो वह बता देगा। वज़ीर तैयार हो गया, अशर्फ़ियाँ दे दीं, और किसान ने उसे राज़ बता दिया।

The next day the king put this riddle before his courtiers, but none of them could work out its meaning. There was a clever vizier at court. He asked the king for a day's time and promised to bring back the answer. The vizier went straight to the farmer and asked him to reveal the secret, but the farmer refused, reminding him of the promise made to the king. When the vizier insisted, the farmer, after thinking it over, said he would tell him if given some ashrafis (gold coins). The vizier agreed, handed over the gold coins, and the farmer told him the secret.

अगले दिन दरबार में राजा ने वज़ीर से पहेली का मतलब पूछा, और वज़ीर ने सही जवाब दे दिया। यह सुनकर राजा को किसान पर बहुत ग़ुस्सा आया, क्योंकि उसने अपना वादा तोड़कर किसी और को राज़ बता दिया था। राजा ने फ़ौरन किसान को दरबार में बुलवाया और सफ़ाई माँगी कि उसने वादा तोड़कर वज़ीर को राज़ क्यों बताया। किसान ने बड़ी होशियारी से जवाब दिया - 'हुज़ूर, मैंने वादा नहीं तोड़ा। मैंने अपने मुँह से यह राज़ किसी इंसान को नहीं बताया - मैंने तो यह बात इन अशर्फ़ियों को बताई थी, जो वज़ीर मेरे पास लाए थे।' राजा किसान की इस अक़लमंदी और होशियारी से बहुत ख़ुश हुआ और उसे फिर से एक बड़ा इनाम दिया। किसान ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी राजा को दुआएँ देता हुआ अपने घर लौट गया।

The next day at court, the king asked the vizier for the meaning of the riddle, and the vizier gave the correct answer. Hearing this, the king grew very angry with the farmer, thinking he had broken his promise by telling someone else the secret. The king immediately summoned the farmer to court and demanded an explanation for breaking his word. The farmer answered with great cleverness - 'Sir, I did not break my promise. I never told this secret to any human being with my own mouth - I told it to these gold coins, which the vizier brought to me.' The king was delighted by the farmer's wit and wisdom, and rewarded him generously once again. The farmer happily returned home, blessing the king as he went.
