عیدگاہ Eidgah

पूरे रमज़ान के रोज़ों के बाद ईद आ गई है। सुबह बड़ी सुहानी है और पेड़ों पर हरियाली छाई हुई है। गाँव में ईद की चहल-पहल है - सब लोग ख़ुश और मुबारकबाद दे रहे हैं। इसी गाँव में चार साल का एक ग़रीब यतीम बच्चा हामिद अपनी बूढ़ी दादी अमीना के साथ रहता है। उसके अब्बू हैज़े की बीमारी से गुज़र गए थे और कुछ समय बाद उसकी अम्मी भी पीली पड़-पड़कर चल बसी थीं। तब से दादी अमीना ही उसे पाल रही है।

After the full month's fasts of Ramzan, Eid has arrived. The morning is pleasant and the trees are green. There is festive bustle in the village - everyone is happy and exchanging Eid greetings. In this village lives a poor, four-year-old orphan boy named Hamid with his old grandmother, Amina. His father had died of cholera, and some time later his mother too had faded and passed away. Since then, grandmother Amina has been raising him alone.

गाँव के दूसरे बच्चे ईद के दिन अपने बाप के साथ जाकर पैसे लेते हैं और उनकी जेबों में तीन-चार पैसे तक जमा हो जाते हैं, जिनसे वे मेले में खिलौने और मिठाइयाँ ख़रीद सकेंगे। मगर हामिद का दिल इससे नहीं मानता - उसे मालूम है कि उसके अब्बू और अम्मी नहीं हैं, फिर भी उसे यक़ीन है कि वे उसे बुलाएँगे। दादी अमीना ने उधार लेकर बड़ी मुश्किल से उसके लिए तीन पैसे जुटाए हैं - यही हामिद की पूरी पूँजी है। हामिद इसी से बहुत ख़ुश है और अकेला ही गाँव के दूसरे बच्चों मोहसिन, मोहम्मद, नूरे और सम्मी के साथ मेले में ईदगाह जाने के लिए निकल पड़ता है।

On Eid, the other village children go with their fathers and collect money, ending up with three or four paise in their pockets to spend on toys and sweets at the fair. But Hamid's heart does not accept that his own parents are gone; still, he sets off. Grandmother Amina, borrowing with great difficulty, has managed to gather three paise for him - this is Hamid's entire fortune. Hamid is very happy with just this, and sets off for the Eidgah fair together with the other village children - Mohsin, Mahmud, Noore and Sammi.

रास्ते में शहर की तरफ़ हलवाइयों की मिठाई की दुकानें, खिलौनों की दुकानें और तरह-तरह की चीज़ों से भरा बाज़ार पड़ता है। हामिद के दोस्त अपने-अपने पैसों से मिठाइयाँ खाते हैं, मगर हामिद अपने तीन पैसे बचाकर रखता है - उसे मालूम है कि उसके पास सिर्फ़ इतने ही पैसे हैं और उसे इन्हें सोच-समझकर ख़र्च करना है। हामिद की यह ईमानदारी और सब्र उसे बाक़ी बच्चों से अलग दिखाता है।

Along the way towards the city lie the sweet-sellers' shops, toy shops, and a bazaar full of all kinds of things. Hamid's friends spend their own money on sweets, but Hamid keeps his three paise saved - he knows this is all the money he has, and he must spend it thoughtfully. This honesty and patience of Hamid's sets him apart from the other children.

ईदगाह में दूर तक क़तारों में नमाज़ी खड़े हैं और नमाज़ अदा होती है। दुआ माँगी जाती है, लोग एक-दूसरे से गले मिलते और मुबारकबाद देते हैं। नमाज़ के बाद मेला शुरू हो जाता है, जिसमें सिपाही, गुब्बारे, राजा-वज़ीर, मौलवी जैसी मिट्टी की बनी खिलौनों की क़तारें सजी होती हैं। हामिद के सारे दोस्त बारी-बारी अपने पैसों से यह खिलौने ख़रीदते हैं और ख़ुश होते हैं, मगर हामिद अब भी अपने तीन पैसे संभाले रखता है।

At the Eidgah, rows of worshippers stand for the Eid prayer, which is offered together. Prayers are made, and people embrace and exchange Eid greetings. After the prayer the fair begins, lined with clay toys - soldiers, balloons, a king-and-minister set, a maulvi figure and more. All of Hamid's friends take turns buying these toys with their own money and are delighted, but Hamid still holds on to his three paise.

आगे एक लोहार की दुकान पर लोहे के औज़ार बिके जा रहे होते हैं। हामिद को अचानक अपनी दादी की याद आती है - दादी रोज़ तवे पर हाथ से रोटियाँ सेंकती हैं और अक्सर तवे की गर्मी से उसकी उँगलियाँ जल जाती हैं, क्योंकि उसके पास कोई चिमटा नहीं है। हामिद अपने सारे तीन पैसे ख़र्च करके उसी दुकान से एक चिमटा ख़रीद लेता है। यह देखकर उसके दोस्त हैरान रह जाते हैं और उसका मज़ाक़ उड़ाते हैं कि उसने खिलौने की बजाय एक बेकार-सा चिमटा क्यों ख़रीदा।

Further on, an ironsmith's shop is selling iron tools. Hamid suddenly remembers his grandmother - she bakes rotis by hand on the griddle every day, and her fingers often get burnt by the griddle's heat because she has no tongs. Hamid spends all three of his paise at that very shop to buy a pair of tongs. Seeing this, his friends are astonished and mock him for buying a plain, useless-looking pair of tongs instead of a toy.

दोस्त हामिद के चिमटे को खिलौना बताकर हँसते हैं और अपने सिपाही, वज़ीर जैसे खिलौनों को उससे बेहतर बताते हैं। हामिद पीछे नहीं हटता - वह अपने चिमटे को 'दस्त-पناہ' यानी हाथ का रखवाला बताता है और दलील देता है कि उसका चिमटा तो किसी भी शेर-सिपाही से ज़्यादा बहादुर है, क्योंकि यह आग में हाथ डालकर भी कुछ नहीं होने देता, जबकि उनके मिट्टी के खिलौने तो टूट-फूट जाएँगे। हामिद की यह होशियार और भरोसेमंद बातें सुनकर उसके दोस्त धीरे-धीरे चुप हो जाते हैं और उसकी बात मान लेते हैं।

The friends laugh, calling Hamid's tongs a poor toy, and claim their own soldier and minister figurines are far better. Hamid does not back down - he calls his tongs a 'protector of the hand' and argues that his tongs are braver than any toy soldier, since they can go straight into fire and take no harm, while their clay toys will simply break. Hearing Hamid's clever and confident reasoning, his friends slowly fall quiet and come around to agreeing with him.

रास्ते में महमूद को भूख लगती है तो हामिद अपने पास मौजूद कुछ खाना उसके साथ बाँट देता है। गाँव लौटकर हामिद सीधा दादी अमीना के पास जाता है और उसे चिमटा दिखाता है। पहले तो दादी यह सुनकर घबरा जाती है कि उसने मेले में खाना-पीना कुछ नहीं ख़रीदा और सारे पैसों का सिर्फ़ एक चिमटा ख़रीद लाया - उसे डर है कि हामिद दिन भर भूखा रहा। मगर जब उसे हामिद की वजह मालूम होती है - कि उसने दादी की जली हुई उँगलियों के बारे में सोचकर यह चिमटा ख़रीदा है - तो दादी का ग़ुस्सा फ़ौरन गहरी मुहब्बत और शफ़क़त में बदल जाता है और उसकी आँखों से आँसू बहने लगते हैं।

On the way back, when Mahmud grows hungry, Hamid shares what little food he has with him. Back in the village, Hamid goes straight to grandmother Amina and shows her the tongs. At first she is alarmed to hear that he bought neither food nor anything to eat at the fair, spending his entire savings on just a pair of tongs - she fears he went hungry all day. But once she learns his reason - that he thought of her burnt fingers and bought the tongs for her sake - her anger instantly turns into deep love and tenderness, and tears begin to flow from her eyes.

कहानी के आख़िर में बताया जाता है कि यह मंज़र बड़ा दिलचस्प था - हामिद ने बच्चे होकर भी एक बूढ़े जैसा पार्ट अदा किया था। यह देखकर दादी का दिल ख़ुशी से भर गया, मगर साथ ही वह बच्ची-सी रोने भी लगी। हामिद अपने आँसुओं का यह राज़ ख़ुद ठीक से नहीं समझ पाता।

The story closes by noting how striking this scene was - though only a child, Hamid had played a part more like an old man's. Seeing this, grandmother Amina's heart filled with joy, yet at the same time she began to cry like a little girl. Hamid himself could not quite understand the meaning behind her tears.
