About the author
A nazm by Ismail Merathi (1844-1917, of Meerut). Merathi is known for writing simple, engaging verse for children; he also prepared several textbooks for children's education in Urdu. 'Baarish ka Pehla Qatra' is a charming nazm in which raindrops talk to each other and teach the lesson of working together.
Summary
भावार्थ: हर बारिश की बूँद के दिल में यह डर था कि बरसने में मुझे शर्म आती है। मैं तो एक नाचीज़ और ग़रीब क़तरा हूँ, जबकि मिट्टी और पत्थर सब गर्म पड़े हैं (यानी मेरे अकेले बरसने से क्या फ़र्क़ पड़ेगा)।
Meaning: every drop's heart held this fear - I feel ashamed to fall alone. I am just a worthless, poor little drop, while the earth and stones are all lying hot (so what difference can I alone make).
भावार्थ: एक क़तरा जो बहुत दिलावर (बहादुर) था और हिम्मत के समंदर में तैरने वाला (शनावर) था, वह ललकार कर बोला - आओ, मेरे पीछे-पीछे क़दम बढ़ाओ।
Meaning: one drop, who was very brave and a swimmer in the ocean of courage, called out boldly - come, follow in my footsteps.
भावार्थ: अगर तुम मिलकर जाँफ़िशानी (जान लड़ाकर मेहनत) करोगे, तो मैदान में फिर से पानी दे सकोगे। इस उदार (सख़ी) क़तरे की हिम्मत देखकर दो-चार और क़तरों ने भी उसकी पैरवी (पीछे चलना) की।
Meaning: if you strive together with all your heart, you will once again bring water to the field. Seeing the courage of this generous drop, a few more drops also followed his lead.
भावार्थ: फिर एक के बाद एक क़तरा लपककर (जल्दी से) आगे बढ़ा, और क़तरा-क़तरा ज़मीन पर टपकने लगा। आख़िरकार सारे क़तरों की लगातार धार बंध गई और मूसलाधार (तेज़) बारिश होने लगी।
Meaning: then, one after another, drop after drop leapt forward and fell drop by drop onto the earth. At last all the drops joined into one continuous stream, and it began to pour down in a heavy downpour.
भावार्थ: ऐ साहबो (सज्जनो)! अपनी क़ौम (जाति/देश) की भी ख़बर रखो, और इन बारिश के क़तरों की तरह ही आपस में इत्तिफ़ाक़ (एकता) कर लो।
Meaning: O friends! Pay heed to your nation too, and unite with one another just as these raindrops did.
