آسمانی دوست Aasmaani Dost (The Sky Friend)

मार्च का एक तूफ़ानी दिन था। तेज़ हवाएँ चल रही थीं, आसमान बादलों से ढका था और पेड़ों की टहनियाँ टूट-टूट कर गिर रही थीं। बारह साल की मुन्नी अपनी पहली मंज़िल की बालकनी में व्हीलचेयर पर बैठी नीचे पार्क में खेलते बच्चों को देख रही थी। मुन्नी अपने पैरों से चल नहीं सकती थी। वह अपने घर के काम ख़ुद अच्छी तरह कर लेती थी और स्कूल के लिए एक ख़ास तरह की गाड़ी उसे लेने आती थी, मगर स्कूल में भी उसकी कोई सहेली नहीं थी - पड़ोस के सारे बच्चे अपने खेलों और स्कूल में मसरूफ़ रहते थे और मुन्नी से उनकी दोस्ती नहीं थी।

It was a stormy day in March. Strong winds were blowing, the sky was covered with clouds, and branches were snapping off the trees. Twelve-year-old Munni sat in her wheelchair on her first-floor balcony, watching children play in the park below. Munni could not walk on her own legs. She managed her own daily tasks well, and a special vehicle came to take her to school - but even at school she had no close friend. All the neighbourhood children stayed busy with their own games and school, and none of them were really friends with Munni.

अचानक तेज़ बारिश शुरू हो गई। नीचे खेल रहे बच्चे भागकर घरों में घुस गए, और पार्क ख़ाली हो गया। तभी मुन्नी ने देखा कि आसमान से कुछ बड़ी और अजीब चीज़ नीचे गिर रही है - वह एक बड़ी, सफ़ेद-नीली परिंदा (एक जंगली लुट्ठ, यानी सर्दियों में शुमाली इलाक़ों से हिंदुस्तान आने वाला मेहमान परिंदा) थी। तेज़ हवा के थपेड़ों से वह अपने ग़ोल (झुंड) से भटक गई थी और उड़ते-उड़ते थककर, चोट खाकर मुन्नी की बालकनी की रेलिंग से टकराकर सीधे उसकी गोद में आ गिरी।

Suddenly heavy rain began to fall. The children playing below ran indoors and the park emptied out. Just then Munni saw something large and strange falling from the sky - it was a big, white-and-blue migratory bird (a wild goose, a winter guest that comes to Hindustan every year from the cold northern regions). Battered by the strong wind, it had lost its flock, and exhausted and injured from flying, it struck the balcony railing and fell straight into Munni's lap.

मुन्नी की मम्मी दौड़ी हुई आईं और उन्होंने घबराए हुए, ज़ख़्मी परिंदे को अंदर लाने में मुन्नी की मदद की। शुरू में परिंदा बहुत डरा हुआ था और उसने मुन्नी के हाथ पर हल्की सी ठोंग भी मार दी, मगर धीरे-धीरे वह शांत हो गया। मुन्नी ने उसे प्यार से 'मित्रा' नाम दिया - मित्र यानी दोस्त। मम्मी ने उसे एक पुरानी टोकरी में रात के लिए मुन्नी के कमरे में रखने की इजाज़त दे दी। शाम तक मुन्नी और मम्मी ने मित्रा को चावल, पानी और फल खिलाने-पिलाने की बहुत कोशिश की, मगर उसने कुछ नहीं खाया - आख़िर मुन्नी ने पके चावल दूध के साथ देने का मशवरा दिया, और मित्रा ने आख़िरकार खाना खा लिया।

Munni's mother came running and helped Munni bring the frightened, injured bird inside. At first the bird was very scared and even gave Munni's hand a light peck, but slowly it calmed down. Munni lovingly named it 'Mitra' - meaning friend. Her mother allowed it to be kept in an old basket in Munni's room for the night. Through the evening, Munni and her mother tried hard to get Mitra to eat rice, water and fruit, but it ate nothing - finally Munni suggested giving it cooked rice with milk, and Mitra finally ate.

अगली सुबह जब मुन्नी की आँख खुली तो टोकरी ख़ाली थी - मित्रा उसमें से निकलकर कमरे में उड़ रहा था और चीज़ें गिरा-गिराकर हंगामा मचा रहा था। मुन्नी की चीख़ सुनकर मम्मी घबराई हुई अंदर आईं। जब उन्होंने दरवाज़ा खोला तो मित्रा फुर्र से बाहर, आँगन में उड़ गया, जहाँ स्कूल जाने के लिए तैयार पड़ोस के बच्चे खड़े थे। बच्चों ने उसे पकड़ने में मुन्नी की मदद की और आख़िरकार मित्रा को दोबारा पकड़ लिया गया। बच्चों ने वादा किया कि वे दोपहर में स्कूल से लौटकर मुन्नी और मित्रा से मिलने ज़रूर आएँगे।

The next morning, when Munni woke up, the basket was empty - Mitra was out, flying around the room and knocking things over in a great commotion. Hearing Munni's cries, her mother rushed in, alarmed. When she opened the door, Mitra flew straight out into the courtyard, where the neighbourhood children were standing ready for school. The children helped Munni catch the bird, and Mitra was finally caught again. The children promised they would definitely come to meet Munni and Mitra after school that afternoon.

उस शाम मुन्नी को एक अजीब सी तकलीफ़ महसूस हुई। उसे ख़याल आया कि अब मित्रा के लिए नए दोस्त बनाना मुश्किल नहीं होगा, क्योंकि वह ख़ुद इतना प्यारा और दिलचस्प परिंदा है। उसे डर लगा कि कहीं मित्रा उसे भूलकर दूसरे बच्चों का ज़्यादा हो जाए। मगर धीरे-धीरे इस वाक़ये के बाद पड़ोस के बच्चे मुन्नी के अच्छे दोस्त बन गए। अगले दिन बच्चे किताबें और मित्रा के लिए खाना लेकर आने लगे, बारी-बारी उसके साथ खेलने और उसकी देखभाल में हिस्सा लेने लगे - और आख़िरकार मुन्नी को एहसास हुआ कि मित्रा की वजह से बच्चों के साथ न खेलने की उसकी पुरानी तकलीफ़ भी कम हो गई है।

That evening Munni felt a strange discomfort. It occurred to her that it would not be hard for Mitra to make new friends, since it was itself such a lovable and interesting bird. She feared Mitra might forget her and become more attached to the other children. But gradually, after this episode, the neighbourhood children became good friends with Munni. The next day the children began bringing books and food for Mitra, taking turns playing with it and helping care for it - and eventually Munni realised that, because of Mitra, her old unhappiness at not playing with the other children had also lessened.

कुछ दिनों बाद परिंदों के रुख़सत होने का वक़्त आ गया - मित्रा और उसके जैसे बाक़ी परिंदे अपने वतन वापस उड़ने के लिए तैयार होने लगे। बच्चों ने मुन्नी की गोद से मित्रा को प्यार से उठाया, आहिस्ता से छज्जे पर छोड़ दिया, और उसने अपने पंख फैलाकर उड़ान भरना शुरू कर दिया। बच्चे बहुत देर तक पानी में तैरते और उड़ते परिंदों को देखते रहे। मित्रा अपने ग़ोल के साथ शुमाल की तरफ़ अपने वतन लौट गया। इस मुहब्बत भरे नन्हे दोस्त के जाने के बाद मुन्नी कुछ अकेली और उदास ज़रूर रही, मगर अब उसके पास सच्चे इंसानी दोस्त भी थे, जो मित्रा की वजह से उसे मिले थे।

A few days later, the time came for the migratory birds to depart - Mitra and the other birds like it began preparing to fly back to their homeland. The children gently lifted Mitra from Munni's lap, set it down on the balcony ledge, and it spread its wings and took flight. The children watched the birds swimming and flying for a long while. Mitra returned north to its homeland with its flock. After this loving little friend left, Munni did feel somewhat lonely and sad - but now she also had true human friends, whom she had gained because of Mitra.
