کابلی والا Kabuliwala

कहानी सुनाने वाला एक मुसन्निफ़ है, जिसकी पाँच बरस की बेटी मुन्नी है। मुन्नी बहुत बातूनी है और एक दिन सुबह-सुबह अपने बाबूजी के पास अपने नए 'नॉवल' (कहानी) का सत्रहवाँ बाब लेकर आ पहुँचती है, जिसमें 'सुसराल' का ज़िक्र है। तभी बाहर एक काबुली वाला - कंधे पर थैला और हाथ में अंगूरों की टोकरी लिए - आवाज़ लगाता हुआ गुज़रता है। मुन्नी उसकी आवाज़ सुनकर डर जाती है और चीख़ते-चिल्लाते हुए घर के अंदर भाग जाती है।

The story is told by a writer whose five-year-old daughter is Mini. Mini is very talkative, and one morning comes to her father with the seventeenth chapter of her own made-up 'novel', which mentions a 'sasural' (in-laws' house). Just then a Kabuliwala - a sack on his shoulder and a basket of grapes in hand - passes by calling out his wares. Hearing his voice, Mini gets frightened and runs screaming into the house.

मुसन्निफ़ काबुली वाले को बुलाकर उससे कुछ मेवे ख़रीदते हैं ताकि मुन्नी का डर दूर हो। धीरे-धीरे मुन्नी की झिझक ख़त्म हो जाती है, और दोनों में एक अजीब-सी दोस्ती हो जाती है। काबुली वाला हँसी-मज़ाक़ में मुन्नी से पूछता, 'तुम सुसराल जाओगी?' - और मुन्नी, जो यह लफ़्ज़ ठीक से समझती भी नहीं थी, चिढ़कर या हँसकर जवाब देती। कभी-कभी वह मुन्नी की जेब में बादाम-पिस्ते डाल देता।

The writer calls the Kabuliwala over and buys some dry fruit from him to ease Mini's fear. Slowly Mini's hesitation disappears, and an unusual friendship grows between the two. The Kabuliwala would teasingly ask Mini, 'Will you go to your sasural?' - and Mini, who did not really understand the word, would answer back crossly or with a laugh. Sometimes he would slip almonds and pistachios into her pocket.

काबुली वाले का नाम रहमत था, और मुसन्निफ़ का नाम रहमान - दोनों के नाम में फ़र्क़ था मगर दोनों में दोस्ती हो गई। रहमत हर साल जाड़ा ख़त्म होने पर अपने वतन (काबुल) जाने से पहले, लोगों से अपना उधार वसूल करने के लिए घर-घर जाता था।

The Kabuliwala's name was Rahmat, and the writer's name was Rahman - their names were different, but the two became friends. Every year, when winter ended, Rahmat would go from house to house to collect his dues before setting off for his homeland, Kabul.

एक दिन मुसन्निफ़ ने एक शोर सुना - रहमत सड़क पर हाथ में ख़ूनी छुरी लिए खड़ा था, और सिपाही उसे गिरफ़्तार करने आ रहे थे। मालूम हुआ कि रहमत ने एक आदमी को उस चादर के पैसे न देने पर, ग़ुस्से में छुरी मार दी थी जो उसने उधार दी थी। रहमत को गिरफ़्तार करके ले जाया गया। जाते-जाते जब मुन्नी ने रोज़ की तरह पूछा 'सुसराल जाओगे?' तो रहमत हँसकर बोला, 'हाँ, वहीं जा रहा हूँ' - और अपने हथकड़ी बँधे हाथों की तरफ़ इशारा करके अपने ससुर (यानी क़ानून/जेल) को मारने की बात कही।

One day the writer heard a commotion - Rahmat stood on the road with a bloody knife in hand, and the police were coming to arrest him. It turned out Rahmat had stabbed a man in anger for refusing to pay him back for a shawl he had given on credit. Rahmat was arrested and taken away. As he was led off, when Mini asked as usual, 'Will you go to your sasural?', Rahmat laughed and said, 'Yes, that is exactly where I am going' - pointing to his handcuffed hands, joking darkly about his 'father-in-law' (the law/jail).

रहमत को कई बरस की सज़ा हो गई। इस दौरान मुन्नी बड़ी हो गई और उसकी अपनी शादी तय हो गई। मुसन्निफ़ भी रहमत को धीरे-धीरे भूल गया। मुन्नी की शादी के ठीक दिन, रहमत जेल से छूटकर मुसन्निफ़ के घर आ पहुँचा - हाथ में वही मेवे लिए, मगर उदास और बदला हुआ। पहले तो मुसन्निफ़ उसे पहचान नहीं पाया और शक भी हुआ, मगर फिर उसे याद आया।

Rahmat was sentenced to several years in jail. Meanwhile Mini grew up, and her own wedding was arranged. The writer, too, gradually forgot about Rahmat. On the very day of Mini's wedding, Rahmat, freshly released from jail, arrived at the writer's house - dry fruit in hand as before, but sad and changed. At first the writer did not recognise him and even felt suspicious, but then he remembered.

रहमत ने मुन्नी के बारे में पूछा, तो उसे बताया गया कि आज उसकी शादी है, इसलिए वह मिल नहीं सकती। यह सुनकर रहमत उदास हो गया। तब उसने अपनी जेब से काग़ज़ का एक छोटा-सा टुकड़ा निकाला, जिस पर एक छोटे बच्चे के हाथ का निशान बना था - यह उसकी अपनी बेटी का हाथ था, जिसे वह बरसों से क़ैद की वजह से देख नहीं पाया था, और जिसे वह हमेशा अपने दिल के पास रखता था।

When Rahmat asked about Mini, he was told that it was her wedding day, so she could not meet him. Hearing this, Rahmat grew sad. He then took out of his pocket a small piece of paper bearing the handprint of a small child - it was the handprint of his own daughter, whom he had not been able to see for years because of his imprisonment, and which he always kept close to his heart.

यह देखकर मुसन्निफ़ का दिल पसीज गया, और उसने शादी की तैयारियों के बावजूद मुन्नी को बुलवा भेजा। दुल्हन के लिबास में शरमाई हुई मुन्नी को देखकर रहमत को अपनी बेटी की याद ताज़ा हो गई, जो अब तक इतने बरसों में उतनी ही बड़ी हो चुकी होगी। मुसन्निफ़ की आँखों में आँसू आ गए, और उसने रहमत को कुछ पैसे दिए ताकि वह काबुल जाकर अपनी बेटी से मिल सके - इसके लिए उसने शादी की कुछ रौशनी और सजावट का ख़र्च भी कम कर दिया।

Seeing this, the writer's heart melted, and despite the wedding preparations he sent for Mini. Seeing Mini, shy in her bridal dress, brought back Rahmat's memory of his own daughter, who by now, after so many years, must have grown just as tall. The writer's eyes filled with tears, and he gave Rahmat some money so that he could go to Kabul and meet his daughter - even cutting down some of the wedding's own lighting and decoration expenses to do so.
