اینٹ کا جواب پتھر Eent ka Jawab Patthar (A Brick Answered with a Stone)

जोधपुर से कुछ दूर एक गाँव में एक किसान रहता था। वह बहुत मेहनती और समझदार था, सुबह से शाम तक खेत में मेहनत करता, मगर फिर भी बहुत ग़रीब था - पेट भरने लायक भी मुश्किल से जुटा पाता। उसकी बीवी उनकी हालत देखकर हमेशा परेशान रहती थी। एक दिन बीवी ने किसान से कहा - 'देखो जी, हमें इस गाँव में रहते इतने दिन हो गए, मगर हमने कभी किसी को खाने पर नहीं बुलाया। आख़िर हमारी भी कोई इज़्ज़त है, इस बार फ़सल पर पूरे गाँव को दावत ज़रूर देनी चाहिए।'

In a village not far from Jodhpur lived a farmer - hardworking and sensible, toiling in the fields from morning to night, yet still very poor, barely managing to fill his stomach. His wife was always troubled seeing their condition. One day she said to him: 'Look, we have lived in this village so long, yet we have never once invited anyone to eat with us. We have some standing too - this harvest, we really must host a feast for the whole village.'

किसान यह सुनकर चुप हो गया, क्योंकि उसके पास दावत के लिए इतना अनाज नहीं था। फ़सल का वक़्त आया तो भी उनके पास ज़रूरत जितना अनाज नहीं बचा। मगर बीवी ने अपनी बात पर ज़िद पकड़ ली, तो आख़िरकार किसान अपना अकेला बैल बेचने के लिए तैयार हो गया, ताकि उन पैसों से गाँव को दावत दी जा सके।

The farmer fell silent, for he had no grain to spare for a feast. When harvest time came, they still had nothing extra saved up. But his wife would not let go of her insistence, so at last the farmer agreed to sell his one and only bullock, so that the money could pay for the village feast.

किसान बैल लेकर चला तो रास्ते में एक गड़रिया मिला, जो अपनी भेड़ें चरा रहा था। गड़रिये ने पूछा कहाँ जा रहे हो, किसान ने बताया बैल बेचने जा रहा हूँ। गड़रिये ने कीमत पूछी तो किसान ने भोलेपन से जवाब दिया - 'जो भी दाम कोई आदमी ऐसे बैल के बताएगा, हम उतने में ही बेच देंगे।' आगे चलकर दोनों को एक पेड़ के नीचे एक बूढ़ा आदमी बैठा मिला। गड़रिये ने चालाकी से अपनी उँगलियों पर हिसाब लगाकर बैल की कीमत सिर्फ़ चौदह रुपये बता दी, और किसान अपनी ही बात का पाबंद होकर उतने में राज़ी हो गया। बूढ़े ने चौदह रुपये देकर बैल ख़रीद लिया।

As the farmer walked on with his bullock, he met a shepherd grazing his sheep. The shepherd asked where he was going; the farmer said he was off to sell the bullock. When asked the price, the farmer answered innocently: 'Whatever price any man names for such a bullock, that is what I shall sell it for.' Further along, they found an old man sitting under a tree. The cunning shepherd quickly worked out a sum on his fingers and named a price of just fourteen rupees - and the farmer, bound by his own word, agreed to it. The old man paid the fourteen rupees and took the bullock.

गड़रिया समझ गया कि यह भोला किसान आसानी से ठगा जा सकता है, और उसने मौक़ा हाथ से जाने न देने का फ़ैसला किया। अगले दिन उसने भेस बदला और किसान के रास्ते में एक अलग रूप में आ खड़ा हुआ, और तरह-तरह की बातें बनाकर किसान से उसके चौदह रुपयों में से कुछ हिस्सा ठग लिया। किसान हर बार भोलेपन से उसकी बात मान लेता। इसी तरह गड़रिये ने दूसरी और तीसरी बार भी अपना भेस बदला - कभी किसी और भेस में, और आख़िर में एक जोगी (साधु) का रूप धरकर - और हर बार किसान को कुछ न कुछ तरकीब से ठगता रहा, जब तक किसान के पास लगभग कुछ न बचा।

The shepherd realised this trusting farmer could easily be fooled again, and decided not to let the chance slip. The next day he changed his disguise and appeared on the farmer's path in a different guise, spinning stories that tricked part of the fourteen rupees out of him. The farmer, trusting as ever, believed him each time. In the same way the shepherd changed his disguise a second and then a third time - eventually appearing dressed as a wandering jogi (ascetic) - and each time swindled the farmer out of a little more, until almost nothing was left.

जब किसान गाँव लौट रहा था, तो उसे एक आदमी घोड़े पर सवार मिला - यह भी वही गड़रिया था, अपने चौथे भेस में, जो ख़ुद को महाराजा का आदमी बता रहा था। सवार ने कहा उनके मालिक की कोई क़ीमती चीज़ रास्ते में गुम हो गई है, और जो भी आदमी रास्ते में मिले उसे मंदिर ले जाकर एक पेड़ से बाँध देना है, ताकि महाराजा का आदमी आकर उसे पकड़ ले। मगर इस बार किसान की आँखें खुल गईं - उसने सवार की चाल पहचान ली और उसका नाम ज़ोर से पुकार दिया। यह सुनते ही सवार डर के मारे भागा, गड़रिया घबराकर दौड़ा, मगर किसान ने उसे दौड़ाकर पकड़ लिया और उसी बूढ़े आदमी के घर ले गया, जिससे पहले बैल बिका था। वहाँ पता चला वह बूढ़ा भी इसी गड़रिये के हाथों चोट खा चुका था। किसान ने गड़रिये से अपना सारा माल और रुपया वापस ले लिया - जैसी चोट मिली थी, वैसी ही लौटा दी।

As the farmer was returning to his village, he came across a man riding a horse - it was the same shepherd again, in his fourth disguise, claiming to be a messenger of the Maharaja. The rider said something precious belonging to his master had gone missing on the road, and that whoever the farmer met should be taken to the temple and tied to a tree, so the Maharaja's man could come and catch him. But this time the farmer's eyes were opened - he recognised the trick and called out the rider's name aloud. Hearing this, the rider fled in fear, the shepherd ran off in panic, but the farmer chased and caught him, and took him to the very house of the old man who had bought the bullock. There it was revealed that the old man too had once been cheated by the same shepherd. The farmer took back all his goods and money from the shepherd - a blow was answered with an equal blow.

किसान अपना माल और पैसा वापस लेकर घर लौटा, बीवी बहुत ख़ुश हुई। कुछ दिनों बाद गाँववालों को बड़ी ज़ोर-शोर की दावत दी गई, और किसान हँसी-ख़ुशी से रहने लगा। यह कहानी राजस्थान की एक लोक कहानी है।

The farmer returned home with his goods and money recovered, and his wife was overjoyed. A few days later a grand feast was thrown for the villagers, and the farmer lived on happily. This tale is a folk story from Rajasthan.
