تین کچھوے Teen Kachhwe (Three Tortoises)

एक बार का ज़िक्र है कि तीन कछुए पानी में रहते-रहते थक गए। उन्होंने सोचा कि क्यों न पहाड़ों की सैर की जाए, जहाँ दियो (दैत्य) रहते हैं, जहाँ हर वक़्त शांति और सुकून रहता है, और जहाँ समंदर जैसे तूफ़ान कभी नहीं आते। यह सोचकर तीनों कछुए पहाड़ की सैर के लिए निकल पड़े। उन्होंने अपने साथ खाने का बहुत सारा सामान भी ले लिया, क्योंकि उनका सफ़र बहुत लंबा था - समंदर से पहाड़ का फ़ासला सैकड़ों मील का था, और कछुए तो वैसे भी बहुत धीरे रेंगकर चलते हैं।

Once upon a time, three tortoises grew tired of always living in the water. They thought - why not go and see the mountains, where giants live, where peace and calm reign all the time, and where storms like those of the sea never come? Thinking this, the three tortoises set out to see the mountains. They packed a great deal of food for the journey, because the distance from the sea to the mountains was hundreds of miles, and tortoises, after all, only crawl along very slowly.

रास्ता बहुत लंबा और हर तरफ़ घने जंगलों से भरा था। लेकिन कछुए हर तकलीफ़ का मुक़ाबला करते हुए आगे बढ़ते चले गए। आख़िरकार वे पहाड़ तक पहुँच गए - जिनकी चोटी बर्फ़ से ढकी हुई थी। इन्हें यहाँ पहुँचते-पहुँचते बीसियों साल गुज़र गए! इतने साल बाद भी उन्हें अपनी मंज़िल दिखाई देने की जो ख़ुशी होनी चाहिए थी, वह किसी ने न देखी - इतनी धीमी रफ़्तार से चलते हुए वे थक-हार भी चुके थे।

The path was very long, thick with forests all along the way. But the tortoises kept struggling forward through every hardship. At last they reached the mountain, whose peak was covered in snow. It took them a good twenty years just to get there! Even after all these years, no one saw in them the joy they should have felt at sighting their destination - they had grown tired and worn out from crawling so slowly.

उन्होंने पहाड़ के दामन में एक बहुत अच्छी जगह पसंद की और सोचा कि यहाँ कुछ दिन आराम किया जाए। इस जगह की शांति ने उन्हें बहुत पसंद आई, यहाँ की मामूली-सी हवा भी बहुत हल्की-हल्की चल रही थी। सर्दी का मौसम था, मगर कछुओं की खाल इतनी मोटी और इतनी सख़्त होती है कि सर्दी का उन पर कोई ख़ास असर नहीं होता - उनका अपना मोटा ख़ोल किसी फ़ौलादी झिल्ली जैसी हिफ़ाज़त करता है। इसी वजह से उन्हें बर्फ़ का भी पता तक नहीं चला और उन्होंने उसे पहचाना भी नहीं।

They chose a very pleasant spot at the foot of the mountain and decided to rest there for a few days. They loved the peace of this place, where even the faintest breeze blew gently. It was winter, but a tortoise's shell is so thick and tough that the cold barely affects it at all - their hard shell protects them like a steel casing. Because of this they did not even notice the snow, and did not recognise it for what it was.

सर्दी का ज़माना था, मगर कछुओं की खाल इतनी मोटी थी कि उन्हें कोई ख़ास असर न हुआ - इसलिए इस सर्दी में उनका खाना खाने का इरादा बदस्तूर बना रहा। उन्हें बहुत ज़ोर की भूख लगी। उन्होंने सोचा कि खाना खाया जाए - यह सोचकर उन्होंने अपना खाना निकाला। सबसे बड़े-बड़े टुकड़े इकट्ठे किए हुए थे, और फिर बड़े सलीक़े से उसे अपने पंजों पर रखा। मगर खाना खाने के लिए उन्हें हाथ धोने के वास्ते पानी चाहिए था - और यहाँ पानी का कहीं नाम-ओ-निशान भी नहीं था, हर तरफ़ सिर्फ़ बर्फ़ ही बर्फ़ थी।

It was winter, but the tortoises' shells were so thick that the cold barely troubled them - so their plan to eat remained unchanged despite the season. They grew terribly hungry. They decided it was time to eat, and took out their food. They had gathered the biggest portions together and arranged them carefully. But to eat, they needed water to wash their hands/paws first - and there was no trace of water to be found anywhere here, only snow on every side.

फिर उन्हें ख़याल आया कि खाना खाने के बाद पानी कैसे पिएँगे - वे तो सिर्फ़ समंदर का पानी पीने के आदी थे, और यहाँ पास-पड़ोस में पानी बिल्कुल मिलता नहीं दिखता था। तीनों कछुए सोच में पड़ गए कि अब क्या किया जाए। आख़िर बड़ा कछुआ बोला - 'चलो, हम में से कोई एक जाकर समंदर से पानी ले आए, फिर हम इत्मीनान से बैठकर खाना खाएँगे।' मंझले कछुए ने कहा - 'मेरी तो राय यह है कि छोटे कछुए को भेजा जाए, क्योंकि वह इस वक़्त सबसे ज़्यादा चुस्त और चालाक मालूम होता है।' यह सुनते ही छोटा कछुआ बहुत बेचैन हो गया - उसे बड़े कछुओं की नीयत पर बिल्कुल भरोसा नहीं था। उसने बड़ी मान-मनौव्वल के बाद कहा - 'मैं चला तो जाऊँगा, मगर मुझे यक़ीन है कि मेरे बग़ैर तुम मेरे बग़ैर ही जाने के बाद मेरा इंतज़ार किए बिना खाना खा जाओगे।' दोनों बड़े कछुओं ने कहा - 'हरगिज़ नहीं, हम तुम्हारा इंतज़ार करते रहेंगे।' छोटा कछुआ फिर भी संजीदा रहा और बोला - 'ठीक है, अगर तुम वादा करते हो तो मुझे यक़ीन है कि तुम हरगिज़ मेरा इंतज़ार करना नहीं छोड़ोगे।' मगर दोनों बड़े कछुओं ने उससे बड़ी ख़ुशामद और क़सम खाकर वादा कर लिया कि वे उसके बग़ैर एक निवाला भी मुँह में नहीं डालेंगे, चाहे इंतज़ार में जितना भी वक़्त लग जाए।

Then they remembered they would need water to drink after eating too - they were used only to drinking seawater, and there seemed to be no water anywhere nearby. All three tortoises fell to wondering what to do now. Finally the big tortoise said, 'Let one of us go and fetch water from the sea, then we can all sit and eat in peace.' The middle tortoise said, 'I think we should send the small tortoise, since he seems the quickest and cleverest of us right now.' On hearing this the small tortoise grew very uneasy - he did not trust the two big tortoises' intentions at all. After much back and forth he said, 'I will go, but I am sure that once I am gone you will not wait for me and will eat without me.' The two big tortoises said, 'Never - we will wait for you.' The small tortoise remained doubtful and said, 'Very well, if you promise, I want to be sure you will never stop waiting for me.' The two big tortoises then, with much persuading and a solemn oath, promised that they would not put even a single morsel in their mouths without him, no matter how long the wait.

आख़िरकार मजबूर होकर छोटा कछुआ चला गया - मगर असल में वह ज़्यादा दूर नहीं गया, बल्कि पास ही एक चट्टान के पीछे छिपकर बैठ गया, ताकि देख सके कि बड़े कछुए सच में उसका इंतज़ार करते हैं या नहीं। अब बाक़ी दोनों कछुए बैठे इंतज़ार करते रहे। महीने गुज़र गए, दस साल गुज़र गए, बीस साल गुज़रे, तीस साल गुज़रे, चालीस साल गुज़रे, पचास साल गुज़रे, साठ साल तक गुज़र गए, फिर भी छोटा कछुआ नहीं आया! अब तो दोनों बड़े कछुओं का बुरा हाल हो गया - भूख के मारे वे बेहाल हो गए थे, मगर इतने सालों में उन्होंने वादा तोड़कर एक निवाला भी नहीं खाया।

In the end, reluctantly, the small tortoise did leave - but in truth he did not go far at all; instead he hid behind a nearby rock so he could watch and see whether the big tortoises would truly wait for him or not. Meanwhile the other two sat and waited. Months passed, ten years passed, twenty years passed, thirty years passed, forty years passed, fifty years passed, even sixty years passed - and still the small tortoise did not return! By now the two big tortoises were in a terrible state - they were weak with hunger - yet through all those years they had not broken their promise or eaten even a single morsel.

आख़िर भूख से बे-क़ाबू होकर दोनों बड़े कछुओं ने खाने की तरफ़ हाथ बढ़ा ही दिया। अभी उन्होंने खाना खाया भी नहीं था कि छोटा कछुआ चट्टान के पीछे से बाहर निकल आया और बोला - 'मुझे मालूम था कि तुम दोनों हरगिज़ मेरा इंतज़ार नहीं करोगे - इसीलिए मैं असल में गया ही नहीं था। मैं तो यहीं बैठा हुआ देख रहा था।' यह सुनकर दोनों बड़े कछुए बहुत शर्मिंदा हो गए - लेकिन असल में उन्होंने तो पूरे बरसों तक अपनी क़सम निभाई थी। कहानी यहीं यूनान की लोक-कहानी के तौर पर ख़त्म होती है।

At last, overcome by hunger, the two big tortoises reached out toward the food. But before they had even eaten, the small tortoise popped out from behind the rock and said, 'I knew you two would never wait for me - that is why I never actually left. I have been sitting right here watching the whole time.' On hearing this, the two big tortoises felt deeply ashamed - even though, in truth, they had kept their oath faithfully for all those long years. The story ends here, marked as a Greek folk tale.
