About the author
This nazm is by Altaf Husain Hali (1837-1914), a famous Urdu poet and prose writer known for bringing new simplicity and purpose to Urdu poetry. His verse is often written in plain language and teaches good values. 'Mitti ka Diya' is a short but lovely poem in which a humble everyday object - a clay lamp - becomes an example of selfless kindness towards others.
Summary
भावार्थ: शाम ढलने के वक़्त एक बुढ़िया अपने घर से मिट्टी का एक दिया लाई और उसे रास्ते में रखकर जला दिया। ऐसा उसने इसलिए किया ताकि रास्ता चलने वाले और परदेसी लोग कहीं अंधेरे में ठोकर न खा जाएँ, और हर छोटा-बड़ा राही आसानी से रास्ता पार कर सके।
Meaning: at the hour of dusk, an old woman brought a clay lamp out from her house and lit it by the wayside. She did this so that travellers and strangers passing by would not stumble in the dark, and every traveller, young or old, could cross the path safely.
भावार्थ: यह छोटा सा मिट्टी का दिया उन शाही झाड़-फ़ानूसों से भी बेहतर है, जिनकी चमकदार रोशनी हमेशा महलों के अंदर ही बंद रहती है और बाहर किसी के काम नहीं आती।
Meaning: this humble clay lamp is better than those grand chandeliers and lanterns, whose bright light always stays shut inside palaces and never serves anyone outside.
भावार्थ: अगर ज़रा बाहर निकलकर महलों से परे देखें, तो पता चलता है कि दरवाज़ों और दीवारों पर घोर अंधेरा छाया हुआ है - यानी महल की रोशनी बाहर वालों के किसी काम नहीं आती।
Meaning: if one steps just a little outside the palaces and looks around, one finds pitch darkness spread over every door and wall - the palace's light never reaches the world beyond its own walls.
भावार्थ: दुनिया में सबसे कामयाब और आदर के लायक़ तो वे रौशनी वाले मीनार (लाइट हाउस) हैं, जिनकी रोशनी की मदद से मल्लाहों के जहाज़ों के बेड़े समुद्र पार करके सही मंज़िल तक पहुँचते हैं।
Meaning: truly successful and worthy of honour in this world are those guiding lighthouse towers, whose light helps sailors' fleets cross the sea safely and reach their destination.
