परीक्षा Pariksha (The Test)

देवगढ़ रियासत के दीवान सरदार सुजानसिंह बूढ़े हो गए थे और अब आराम करना चाहते थे। वे महाराज के पास गए और कहा कि उन्होंने चालीस साल तक सेवा की है, अब उनकी उम्र भी ढल गई है और राज-काज सँभालने की ताकत नहीं रही। अगर कोई भूल हो गई तो बुढ़ापे में बदनामी होगी। राजा साहब अपने अनुभवी दीवान का बहुत सम्मान करते थे और उन्हें बहुत समझाया, लेकिन दीवान नहीं माने। आखिरकार राजा ने उनकी बात मान ली, पर एक शर्त रखी - नया दीवान खुद सुजानसिंह को ही ढूँढ़ना होगा।

When Sardar Sujansingh, the diwan (chief minister) of Devgadh state, grew old, he thought of retiring. He went to the Maharaja and pleaded that he had served for forty years, that his strength to manage state affairs was fading, and that any mistake now would stain his life's good name. The Raja greatly respected his experienced and wise diwan and tried hard to persuade him to stay, but Sujansingh would not agree. Finally the Raja accepted his request, on one condition: Sujansingh himself would have to find a new diwan for the state.

अगले दिन देश के मशहूर अखबारों में विज्ञापन छपा कि देवगढ़ को एक योग्य दीवान चाहिए। जो कोई खुद को इस काम के लायक समझे, वह सुजानसिंह के पास आ जाए। ग्रेजुएट होना ज़रूरी नहीं था, पर सेहतमंद होना ज़रूरी था। एक महीने तक उम्मीदवारों के रहन-सहन और आचार-व्यवहार को परखा जाएगा - पढ़ाई से ज़्यादा कर्तव्य को देखा जाएगा। इस विज्ञापन से पूरे देश में हलचल मच गई। सैकड़ों लोग अपनी किस्मत आज़माने देवगढ़ पहुँच गए। इनमें सबसे ज़्यादा संख्या ग्रेजुएटों की थी।

The next day, an advertisement appeared in the country's leading newspapers announcing that Devgadh needed a suitable diwan. Any gentleman who considered himself worthy could present himself to Sardar Sujansingh. Being a graduate was not required, but being physically fit and healthy was. For a month, the candidates' lifestyle and conduct would be observed - duty would matter more than education. The advertisement caused a sensation across the country. Hundreds of men set out to test their luck, and Devgadh soon filled with new and colourful strangers, with graduates forming the largest group.

सुजानसिंह ने इन सब उम्मीदवारों के रहने-खाने का अच्छा इंतज़ाम कर दिया था। हर आदमी अपनी सूझ-बूझ से खुद को अच्छा दिखाने की कोशिश कर रहा था। जो मिस्टर 'अ' रोज़ नौ बजे तक सोते थे, वे अब सुबह-सुबह बगीचे में टहलते नज़र आते। जो मिस्टर 'द', 'स' और 'ज' घर पर नौकरों से बुरा बर्ताव करते थे, वे अब उनसे 'आप' और 'जनाब' कहकर बात करते। जिन मिस्टर 'ल' को किताबों से नफ़रत थी, वे अब बड़ी-बड़ी किताबें पढ़ने में डूबे रहते। सबको लगता था कि बस एक महीने की बात है, किसी तरह निकाल लें। लेकिन आदमियों को परखने वाला वह बूढ़ा जौहरी (सुजानसिंह) छुपकर देख रहा था कि इन नकली बगुलों में असली हंस कौन है।

Sardar Sujansingh made excellent arrangements for hosting all these candidates. Every man tried, according to his own cleverness, to present his life in the best possible light. Mr 'A', who usually slept until nine, now took morning walks in the garden to watch the sunrise. Mr 'D', 'S' and 'J', whose servants normally suffered under them, now spoke to their servants only with polite words like 'aap' and 'janab'. Mr 'L', who hated books, was now seen buried in reading large volumes. People thought it was just a one-month hassle to get through somehow. But the old, discerning jeweller of men (Sujansingh) sat quietly watching from the shadows to see which of these herons hid a true swan within.

एक दिन नए फ़ैशन पसंद करने वाले उम्मीदवारों ने आपस में हॉकी खेलने की सोची। देवगढ़ में यह खेल बिल्कुल नया था, क्योंकि पढ़े-लिखे लोग वहाँ शतरंज और ताश जैसे शांत खेल ही खेलते थे। खेल बड़े जोश से चलता रहा। एक तरफ के खिलाड़ी गेंद लेकर तेज़ी से दौड़ते तो लगता जैसे लहर उठ रही हो, लेकिन दूसरी तरफ के खिलाड़ी उन्हें लोहे की दीवार की तरह रोक लेते। शाम तक यह खेल चलता रहा, सब पसीने से भीग गए और थककर हाँफने लगे, लेकिन कोई हार-जीत तय नहीं हो पाई।

One day the newly fashionable candidates decided to play a game of hockey among themselves. In the state of Devgadh, this game was something quite novel - educated gentlemen there usually played sedate games like chess and cards. The game continued with great enthusiasm. When players charging with the ball moved swiftly, it looked as if a wave were surging forward, but the opposing players would block that rising wave as if they were an iron wall. This commotion continued until evening. Everyone was drenched in sweat, their faces flushed with the heat of exertion, panting and exhausted, but no decision on who had won or lost could be reached.

अंधेरा हो चुका था। मैदान से थोड़ी दूर एक नाला था। खेल अभी-अभी खत्म हुआ था और खिलाड़ी थककर बैठे साँस ले रहे थे, तभी एक किसान अनाज से भरी गाड़ी लेकर उस नाले के पास आया। नाले में कीचड़ था और चढ़ाई इतनी ऊँची थी कि गाड़ी ऊपर नहीं चढ़ पा रही थी। किसान कभी बैलों को हाँकता, कभी पहियों को धक्का देता, लेकिन बोझ ज़्यादा था और बैल कमज़ोर। वह बार-बार कोशिश करता और गुस्से में बैलों को मारता, पर गाड़ी वहीं की वहीं रहती। बेचारा इधर-उधर देखता पर कोई मदद करने वाला नज़र नहीं आता। तभी खिलाड़ी हाथों में डंडे लिए घूमते हुए वहाँ से निकले। किसान ने डरी हुई नज़रों से उन्हें देखा, लेकिन मदद माँगने की हिम्मत नहीं हुई। खिलाड़ियों ने भी उसे देखा, पर बिना किसी सहानुभूति के - उनमें केवल घमंड और स्वार्थ था, दया नहीं।

It had grown dark. A short distance from the field was a nullah (drain). The game had just ended and the players sat catching their breath when a farmer arrived at the nullah with a cart full of grain. There was mud in the nullah and the slope was so steep that the cart could not climb up. He alternately urged the oxen and pushed at the wheels with his hands, but the load was heavy and the oxen weak. He tried again and again, angrily beating the oxen, but the cart would not budge. The poor man looked around helplessly but saw no one to help. Just then the players, sticks in hand, wandered past. The farmer looked at them with frightened eyes but did not dare ask for help. The players too saw him, but with closed, unfeeling eyes - in them was selfishness and pride, but not a trace of generosity or compassion.

लेकिन उन्हीं खिलाड़ियों में एक ऐसा युवक भी था जिसके दिल में दया और हिम्मत दोनों थी। हॉकी खेलते हुए उसके पैर में आज ही चोट लगी थी, इसलिए वह लँगड़ाता हुआ धीरे-धीरे चल रहा था। अचानक उसकी नज़र गाड़ी पर पड़ी। वह रुक गया। किसान का चेहरा देखते ही उसे सारी बात समझ आ गई। उसने अपना डंडा एक तरफ रख दिया, कोट उतार दिया, और किसान के पास जाकर पूछा, 'मैं तुम्हारी गाड़ी निकाल दूँ?' किसान झुककर बोला, 'हुज़ूर, मैं आपसे कैसे कहूँ?' युवक ने कहा, 'तुम गाड़ी पर बैठकर बैलों को सँभालो, मैं पहिये धकेलता हूँ, अभी गाड़ी ऊपर आ जाएगी।' किसान गाड़ी पर बैठ गया। युवक ने पूरी ताक़त से पहिया धकेला। कीचड़ इतना ज़्यादा था कि वह घुटनों तक धँस गया, फिर भी उसने हिम्मत नहीं हारी। उसने फिर ज़ोर लगाया और किसान ने बैलों को हाँका। बैलों को हौसला मिला और एक ज़ोरदार धक्के में गाड़ी नाले के ऊपर आ गई।

But among that same group was one man whose heart held both compassion and courage. That day, playing hockey, he had injured his leg and was walking slowly, limping. Suddenly his eyes fell on the cart. He stopped short. The moment he saw the farmer's face, he understood everything. He set his stick aside, took off his coat, went up to the farmer and said, 'Shall I get your cart out?' The farmer bowed and said, 'Sir, how can I ask this of you?' The young man said, 'You go and steady the oxen, I'll push the wheels, the cart will climb up now.' The farmer climbed onto the cart. The young man pushed hard at the wheel. The mud was so deep that he sank in up to his knees, but he did not lose heart. He pushed again, and the farmer urged the oxen forward. The oxen found strength, gathered courage, put their shoulders into one great effort, and the cart was up and over the nullah.

किसान ने युवक के सामने हाथ जोड़ते हुए कहा, 'महाराज, आपने आज मुझे बचा लिया, नहीं तो मुझे पूरी रात यहीं बैठना पड़ता।' युवक ने हँसते हुए मज़ाक में पूछा, 'अब मुझे कुछ इनाम दोगे?' किसान ने गंभीर होकर कहा, 'भगवान चाहेंगे तो दीवानी आपको ही मिलेगी।' यह सुनकर युवक ने किसान को ध्यान से देखा। उसे शक हुआ - कहीं यह सुजानसिंह तो नहीं? आवाज़ भी मिलती है और चेहरा भी वैसा ही लगता है। किसान ने भी उसे गौर से देखा, शायद वह युवक के मन का शक भाँप गया था। मुस्कराकर बोला, 'गहरे पानी में उतरने से ही मोती मिलता है' - यानी मेहनत करने पर ही कामयाबी मिलती है।

The farmer stood before the young man with folded hands and said, 'Sir, you have rescued me today, otherwise I would have had to sit here all night.' The young man laughed and said, 'Will you give me a reward now?' The farmer replied gravely, 'If God wills it, the diwan's post itself will be yours.' The young man looked closely at the farmer. A doubt arose in his mind: could this be Sujansingh himself? The voice sounded similar, and the face too. The farmer also looked at him sharply, perhaps sensing the doubt in his heart. Smiling, he said, 'Only by diving into deep water does one find a pearl' - a proverb meaning true effort brings true reward.

आखिरकार एक महीना पूरा हो गया और चुनाव का दिन आ पहुँचा। शाम को राजा साहब का दरबार सजाया गया। शहर के बड़े लोग, राज्य के कर्मचारी और दीवानी के सारे उम्मीदवार अच्छे कपड़े पहनकर दरबार में इकट्ठा हुए। सुजानसिंह ने खड़े होकर कहा, 'मेरे उम्मीदवार भाइयो, मैंने आपको जो तकलीफ़ दी, उसके लिए मुझसे माफ़ी माँगता हूँ। इस पद के लिए ऐसे इंसान की ज़रूरत थी, जिसके दिल में दया हो और साथ ही हिम्मत भी - जो मुश्किल समय में बहादुरी से डटकर खड़ा रहे। इस रियासत के भाग्य से हमें ऐसा इंसान मिल गया। मैं पंडित जानकीनाथ जी को दीवानी मिलने की बधाई देता हूँ।' यह सुनकर सब लोगों ने जानकीनाथ की ओर देखा। बाकी उम्मीदवारों की आँखों में सम्मान नहीं, बल्कि जलन थी।

At last the month ended and the day of selection arrived. In the evening the Raja's darbar (court) was set up. The city's nobles and wealthy men, state officials and courtiers, and the whole group of diwan candidates, all gathered in their finest clothes. Sardar Sujansingh stood and said, 'My dear candidates, forgive me for the trouble I have put you through. This post needed a man with a compassionate heart along with inner strength, a heart that is generous, and strength that faces adversity with courage. By this state's good fortune, we have found such a man. I congratulate Pandit Jankinath on receiving the post of diwan.' The state's officials and nobles looked toward Jankinath. The eyes of the candidate group turned there too, but in those eyes was envy, not respect.

सरदार सुजानसिंह ने आगे कहा, 'आपको यह मानने में कोई परेशानी नहीं होगी कि जो इंसान खुद घायल होते हुए भी एक गरीब किसान की भरी हुई गाड़ी को कीचड़ से निकालकर नाले के ऊपर चढ़ा दे, उसके दिल में साहस, हिम्मत और दयालुता ज़रूर है। ऐसा इंसान कभी गरीबों को नहीं सताएगा। उसका इरादा मज़बूत है, जो उसके मन को स्थिर रखेगा। भले ही उसे कभी धोखा मिले, फिर भी वह दया और सही रास्ते से कभी नहीं हटेगा।'

Sardar Sujansingh continued, 'You will surely agree that a man who, though injured himself, freed a poor farmer's laden cart from the mud and pushed it up over the nullah, carries courage, inner strength and generosity in his heart. Such a man will never trouble the poor. His resolve is firm, and it will keep his mind steady. Even if he is deceived, he will never turn away from compassion and righteousness.'
