चेतक की वीरता Chetak Ki Veerta (The Valour of Chetak)

युद्ध के मैदान में बार-बार तेज़ छलांगें भरकर चेतक अनोखा घोड़ा बन गया था। राणा प्रताप के घोड़े चेतक ने हवा को भी मात दे दी थी यानी वह हवा से भी तेज़ दौड़ता था। चेतक इतना आज्ञाकारी था कि राणा प्रताप को उस पर कभी कोड़ा (चाबुक) चलाना ही नहीं पड़ता था। वह इतनी तेज़ी से दौड़ रहा था मानो शत्रुओं के सिर के ऊपर या फिर आसमान में उड़ रहा हो।

Leaping again and again across the battlefield, Chetak had become an extraordinary horse. Maharana Pratap's horse had outrun even the wind. Pratap's whip never once had to fall on Chetak's body - he needed no urging. He ran as if he were racing over the heads of the enemy, or as if he were a horse galloping across the sky.

हवा से लगाम भर हिलते ही चेतक अपने सवार (राणा प्रताप) को लेकर उड़ने जैसी रफ़्तार से दौड़ पड़ता था। राणा प्रताप की आँख की पुतली मुड़ने से भी पहले चेतक समझ जाता और उस दिशा में मुड़ जाता था। उसने अपनी चालों में ऐसा कौशल दिखाया कि डरावने भालों के बीच से भी निकल गया। वह बिना डरे शत्रु की ढालों में घुस गया और तलवारों (करवालों) के बीच सरपट दौड़ता रहा।

The moment the rein shifted even slightly in the wind, Chetak would carry his rider away like the wind itself. Chetak would turn before even the Rana's eye-pupil had finished turning - he anticipated his master's every intention. He showed such skill in his moves that he darted through terrifying spears unharmed. Fearless, he charged through enemy shields, galloping at full speed amid swords (karvaal).

चेतक इतनी फुर्ती से दौड़ता था कि अभी वह यहाँ दिखता था तो अगले ही पल वहाँ नहीं होता था। ऐसी कोई जगह युद्ध के मैदान में नहीं बची थी जहाँ चेतक न पहुँचा हो। ऐसा भी कोई शत्रु का सिर नहीं बचा था जिस पर से चेतक न गुज़रा हो।

He was here just now, but now he is not here; he stayed there, yet he is not there. There was no place in the battlefield he had not reached, no enemy's head over which he had not charged.

चेतक उफनती हुई नदी की तरह लहराता हुआ आगे बढ़ता, कभी दौड़ता तो कभी रुक जाता। वह भयंकर, बिजली जैसे बादल की तरह गरजते हुए शत्रु की सेना पर टूट पड़ा। लड़ाई में शत्रु का भाला गिर गया, तरकश (निषंग) गिर गया, और घोड़े की टापों की चोट से शत्रु का शरीर घायल हो गया। चेतक का ऐसा अद्भुत रंग-ढंग देखकर पूरी शत्रु-सेना दंग रह गई।

Rising like a swelling river, Chetak surged forward, sometimes racing, sometimes halting. Like a terrible, thunder-laden cloud, he crashed roaring upon the enemy army. The enemy's spear fell, his quiver (nishang) fell, and the enemy's body was wounded by the blows of Chetak's hooves. Seeing such astonishing spirit in the horse, the entire enemy camp stood stunned.
