About the author
This pada was composed by Surdas. He is believed to have been born in the 15th century. Surdas spent most of his life in the Braj region - including Mathura and Govardhan - singing devotional songs (bhajans) in praise of Sri Krishna. His compositions are in Brajbhasha and remain hugely popular even today. Most of his poems give a delightful description of Krishna's childhood pranks (baal-leela). For his outstanding compositions he is called 'Mahakavi Surdas' (the great poet Surdas). He died in the 16th century. Summary
श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं - माँ, मैंने माखन नहीं खाया। सुबह होते ही तो मुझे गायों के पीछे मधुबन भेज दिया गया था। मैं चार पहर तक बंसीवट में इधर-उधर भटकता रहा और शाम होने पर ही घर लौटा - तो माखन खाने का समय ही कब मिला?
Krishna says: Mother, I did not eat the butter. As soon as it was dawn I was sent off behind the cows to Madhuban. I wandered for four watches (chaar pahar) near the Bansiwat tree and returned home only when evening fell - so when did I get the chance to eat butter?
श्रीकृष्ण आगे कहते हैं - माँ, मैं तो छोटा बालक हूँ, मेरी बाँहें भी छोटी हैं। मैं ऊँचे टँगे छींके तक कैसे पहुँच सकता हूँ? असल में मेरे साथी ग्वाल-बाल मुझसे बैर (जलन) रखते हैं और उन्होंने ज़बरदस्ती मेरे मुँह पर माखन मल दिया है।
Krishna continues: Mother, I am just a small child, my arms are tiny too - how could I ever reach the butter basket (chheeka) hung up high? In truth, my playmates the cowherd boys (gwaal-baal) are jealous of me, and they forcibly smeared butter on my face.
श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं - माँ, तुम मन की बहुत भोली हो, तुमने इन ग्वाल-बालों की बात मान ली। तुम्हारे मन में ज़रूर कोई भेद (शक) पैदा हो गया है, जिससे तुमने मुझे अपना न मानकर पराया समझ लिया। यह लो अपनी लाठी और कमरिया (कंबल) वापस - तुमने मुझे बहुत नचाया (परेशान किया)। सूरदास कहते हैं कि तब यशोदा माँ हँस पड़ीं और श्रीकृष्ण को अपने गले-हृदय से लगा लिया।
Krishna says: Mother, you are very simple-hearted (bholi), you believed what these boys told you. Some doubt must have arisen in your heart, so you mistook me for a stranger. Here, take back your stick and blanket (lakuti-kamariya) - you made me dance around a lot (troubled me). Surdas says that Yashoda then laughed and pulled Krishna close, embracing him to her heart.
