گرمی اور دیہاتی بازار Garmi aur Dehati Bazaar (Heat and the Village Market)

भावार्थ: दोपहर का वक़्त है, बाज़ार और दुकानों में गाँव के लोगों का शोर मचा है। ख़ून को प्यासी कर देने वाली धूप की किरनें और रूह को थका देने वाली लू का ज़ोर है। ज़िंदगी के कारोबार में आग जैसी तेज़ी और उलझन है - तेज़ शोले, लाल-लाल धूल के ज़र्रे, गर्म हवा के झोंके, चमकता सूरज। हर तरफ़ शोर, हलचल, हंगामा, बेचैनी, लू, गर्मी और धूल-गर्द है। बैल, घोड़े, बकरियाँ, भेड़ें कतार दर कतार खड़ी हैं। मक्खियाँ भिनभिना रही हैं, गुड़ की महक और मिर्चों की तीखी गंध फैली है। खरबूज़े, आलू, खली, गेहूँ, कद्दू, तरबूज़ और घास बाज़ार में बिछी हुई है।

Meaning: It is afternoon, and the marketplace and shops are loud with the noise of the village folk. The sun's rays are blood-thirsty, and the heat-wave's force is soul-exhausting. Life's business has the twisting, burning intensity of fire - fierce flames, red grains of dust, hot gusts of wind, a blazing sun. Everywhere there is noise, commotion, tumult, restlessness, heat-wave, heat and dust. Bullocks, horses, goats and sheep stand in queue after queue. Flies buzz about, there is the smell of jaggery and the sharp reek of chillies. Melons, potatoes, oil-cake, wheat, pumpkins, watermelons and grass are spread out in the market.

भावार्थ: धूप की तेज़ी है, हवा के थपेड़े हैं, गर्मी की लहर चल रही है। कमली (मोटे कंबल) पर लाल-लाल चावल बिछे हैं, टाट के टुकड़ों पर भी वही हाल है। गर्म धूल के ज़र्रों की सख़्ती और आँधियों की कठोरता है। आँधियों में खांसते हुए बूढ़ों की चिलमों का धुआँ उठ रहा है। माओं के कंधे पर बच्चे गर्दन ढाले हुए हैं, भूख से उनकी आँखों में तारे-से चमक रहे हैं, वे प्यास के मारे बेहाल हैं। घरों की छतें और दरवाज़े सूरज की आफ़त से काँप रहे हैं - हर साँस में धूल के ज़र्रों से मानो आग की आँच उठ रही हो।

Meaning: The sun's fierceness, the wind's assaults, the heat-wave's current continue. Red grain is spread on coarse blankets and on scraps of sackcloth. There is the harshness of hot dust-grains, the cruelty of dust-storms. Amid the storms, old men cough as smoke rises from their pipes. Children hang their necks limply on their mothers' shoulders, the stars of hunger in their eyes, worn down by thirst. Roofs and doorways tremble under the sun's calamity - every breath seems to raise a scorching heat from the very dust-grains.

भावार्थ: मर्द-औरतें उलझन में चीलों की चीख़ सुन रहे हैं, चिलचिलाती धूप में चने भुन रहे हैं (यानी शिद्दत की गर्मी है)। पेड़ों के साये से छनकर आती धूप की किरनें ऐसी लगती हैं जैसे मौसम की बे-रहम तलवार म्यान से बाहर निकल आई हो। लू के थपेड़ों से घरों की दीवारें और दरवाज़े मानो घबरा गए हों। दोस्तों के चेहरों पर भी अजनबीपन छा गया है (गर्मी से सब बेज़ार हैं)। आसमान पर बादल के भटकते हुए टुकड़े ऐसे नज़र आते हैं जैसे किसी कंजूस का, नशे की हालत में किया हुआ सख़ावत और करम का वादा - यानी बे-भरोसा और खोखला।

Meaning: Men and women, in their daily bustle, hear the cries of kites; chickpeas roast in the scorching sun's blaze (a mark of extreme heat). Rays of sunlight filtering through the shade of trees seem like the merciless sword of the season drawn from its sheath. Walls and doorways seem to tremble in fear, struck by the heat-wave. Even friends' faces are clouded with a strange aloofness (everyone is weary from the heat). Stray patches of cloud wandering in the sky look like a miser's drunken promise of generosity and charity - unreliable and hollow.

भावार्थ: हर चाल-ढाल में चिड़चिड़ापन है, हर आवाज़ में बेरुख़ी झलकती है। हर किसी का जिगर मानो भुन रहा है, हर सिर (खोपड़ी) धूप में पक रहा है। सिर पर बेरहम (काफ़िर) धूप ऐसे पड़ रही है जैसे रूह पर गुनाह की परछाईं हो। तेज़ किरनें ऐसी हैं जैसे बूढ़े सूदख़्वारों (सूद पर पैसा उधार देने वालों) की लालची, बेरहम निगाह।

Meaning: Irritability marks every manner, indifference colours every voice. Every heart seems to be roasting, every skull seems to be cooking in the heat. The merciless ('faithless') sun beats down on every head like the shadow of sin upon the soul. Its sharp rays are like the greedy, pitiless gaze of old moneylenders.
