گدڑی کا لال - نور خاں Gudri ka Laal (Jewel in Rags)

मुसन्निफ़ कहते हैं कि लोग आम तौर पर बादशाहों, उमरा और मशहूर शख़्सियतों के हालात-ए-ज़िंदगी लिखते हैं, ग़रीब और गुमनाम लोगों के नहीं - शायद इसलिए कि उन्हें यह ख़याल होता है कि ऐसे लोगों की ज़िंदगी में पढ़ने-सुनने लायक़ कुछ ख़ास नहीं होता। मगर मुसन्निफ़ का मानना है कि यह सोच ग़लत है; ग़रीब और मामूली लोगों के हालात भी अक्सर उतने ही सबक़-आमोज़ होते हैं जितने बड़े लोगों के, क्योंकि इंसान की असल पहचान उसकी दौलत या ओहदे से नहीं बल्कि उसके किरदार से होती है, और किरदार में अमीर-ग़रीब का कोई फ़र्क़ नहीं होता।

The author says people generally write the life-stories of kings, nobles and famous personalities, not of poor and unknown people - perhaps because they assume such lives hold nothing worth reading. But the author believes this thinking is wrong; the lives of poor, ordinary people are often just as instructive as those of the great, because a person's true identity comes from character, not wealth or rank - and character makes no distinction between rich and poor.

मरहूम नूर ख़ाँ शुरू में एक रिसाले (घुड़सवार फ़ौज की टुकड़ी) में सिपाही था, फिर हैदराबाद की अंग्रेज़ी फ़ौज की कैंटोनमेंट में एक ख़ास हैसियत और इम्तियाज़ रखने वाला आदमी बन गया - ऐसा दर्जा जो हर किसी को नसीब नहीं होता। नूर ख़ाँ का ख़ानदानी नसब भी असल में शरीफ़ था, हालाँकि पहले-पहल यह बात नुमायाँ तौर पर नज़र नहीं आती थी। मुसन्निफ़ बताते हैं कि नूर ख़ाँ बहुत ज़बरदस्त 'ڈرل انسٹرکٹر' (ड्रिल इंस्ट्रक्टर) था और घोड़ों को क़ाबू में करने और सधाने का हुनर उसे ख़ूब आता था - अंग्रेज़ फ़ौजी भी उसकी इस महारत के बहुत क़ायल और उसकी सलीक़ेमंदी की तारीफ़ करने वाले थे।

The late Noor Khan began as a sowar (trooper) in a cavalry regiment, then rose to a position of distinct standing in an English cavalry cantonment in Hyderabad - a status not everyone attains. Noor Khan's own family lineage was in fact respectable, though this was not obvious at first glance. The author explains that Noor Khan was an outstanding drill instructor with a real gift for handling and training horses - the English soldiers greatly admired his skill and praised his refined manner.

एक मौक़े पर घोड़ों की ड्रिल के दौरान एक अंग्रेज़ अफ़सर सख़्त नाराज़ हो गया और नूर ख़ाँ को बुरा-भला कहा, यहाँ तक कि उसकी बेइज़्ज़ती की। नूर ख़ाँ ने इसकी शिकायत अपने कमांडिंग अफ़सर से की, और मामला इतना बढ़ा कि जनरल और कोर्ट मार्शल तक पहुँच गया। आख़िरकार उस अंग्रेज़ अफ़सर को नूर ख़ाँ से माफ़ी माँगनी पड़ी। यह वाक़िया दिखाता है कि नूर ख़ाँ एक ख़ुद्दार, ग़ैरतमंद आदमी था जो अपनी बेइज़्ज़ती ख़ामोशी से बर्दाश्त नहीं करता था - चाहे सामने वाला रुतबे में उससे कितना ही बड़ा क्यों न हो।

On one occasion during horse drill, an English officer became furiously angry and spoke harshly to Noor Khan, even insulting him. Noor Khan reported this to his commanding officer, and the matter escalated all the way to the general and a court martial. In the end the English officer was made to apologise to Noor Khan. This incident shows Noor Khan to be a self-respecting man of dignity who would not silently bear an insult to his honour - no matter how much higher in rank the other person was.

एक बार एक कर्नल साहब ने नूर ख़ाँ से एक अच्छा घोड़ा माँगा। नूर ख़ाँ ने साफ़ बता दिया कि इस घोड़े में एक ऐब है, इसे मुफ़्त में भी न लें। इस पर कर्नल साहब मुफ़्त पेशकश ठुकराए जाने से नाराज़ हो गए, और बाद में जब उन्हें असल माजरा मालूम हुआ तो उन्होंने अपनी नाराज़गी पर अफ़सोस ज़ाहिर किया और नूर ख़ाँ की सच्चाई की तारीफ़ की। एक और मौक़े पर एक कर्नल साहब ने नूर ख़ाँ से नौकरी छुड़वाकर उसका सारा माल-असबाब हड़पने की कोशिश की; नूर ख़ाँ ने साफ़ इनकार कर दिया और कर्नल स्टुअर्ट को ख़त लिखकर पूरी फ़ेहरिस्त सामान की भेज दी - यह सब उसकी दियानतदारी और साफ़-गोई की मिसालें हैं।

Once a Colonel asked Noor Khan for a good horse. Noor Khan told him plainly that the horse had a flaw and he should not take it even for free. The Colonel was annoyed at the free offer being turned down, but on later learning the true situation he regretted his anger and praised Noor Khan's honesty. On another occasion a Colonel tried to have Noor Khan dismissed from service and seize all his belongings; Noor Khan firmly refused, and wrote to Colonel Stewart, sending him a complete list of his possessions - these episodes are examples of his honesty and plain-speaking.

कर्नल एस्टुअर्ट (اسٹوارٹ) भी नूर ख़ाँ के इस रसाले के बहुत मेहरबान अंग्रेज़ अफ़सर थे। जब नूर ख़ाँ ने सेहत की वजह से नौकरी से इस्तीफ़ा दिया, तो कर्नल एस्टुअर्ट ने ख़ुद कोशिश करके नाज़िम पुलिस से सिफ़ारिश की और उसे एक अच्छा ओहदा दिलवा दिया - एक 'खाँ साहब' नाम के मालदार शख़्स के यहाँ, जो सूबा औरंगाबाद के दार-उल-हुकूमत होने पर वहाँ जाकर बस गए। खाँ साहब की सलामी की तैयारी में नूर ख़ाँ ने बड़ी मेहनत की, और जब लार्ड कर्ज़न (गवर्नर जनरल) औरंगाबाद आए तो उनके क़िले की हिफ़ाज़त और इंतज़ाम में भी नूर ख़ाँ ने बड़ी होशियारी और बहादुरी दिखाई।

Colonel Stewart, too, was a very kindly English officer of Noor Khan's regiment. When Noor Khan resigned from service on health grounds, Colonel Stewart personally recommended him to the police chief and secured him a good post - in the household of a wealthy man addressed as 'Khan Sahib', who settled in Aurangabad when it became the seat of the state government there. Noor Khan worked hard preparing Khan Sahib's ceremonial reception, and when Lord Curzon (the Governor-General) visited Aurangabad, Noor Khan also showed great alertness and courage in guarding and managing the fort.

बाद में नूर ख़ाँ डॉक्टर सिराज-उल-हसन के यहाँ मुलाज़िम हो गया, जो औरंगाबाद और हैदराबाद के तालीमी महकमे के सद्र-मुहतमिम थे। डॉक्टर साहब ने उसे बहुत शरीफ़ाना बर्ताव और दोस्ताना अंदाज़ में रखा, और उसे अपने बाग़ की निगरानी पर मुक़र्रर किया, पाँच रुपये माहवार अलाउंस के साथ। नूर ख़ाँ ने इस ज़िम्मेदारी को बड़ी दियानतदारी से निभाया - एक बार बाग़ के गिर्द बंदूक़ और पिस्तौल जैसे नज़राने पेश किए गए तो उसने लेने से इनकार कर दिया, यह कहते हुए कि यह उसका फ़र्ज़ था, इनाम की चीज़ नहीं। डॉक्टर सिराज-उल-हसन तरक़्क़ी पाकर हैदराबाद चले गए तो नूर ख़ाँ की सिफ़ारिश ख़ुद मुसन्निफ़ (मौलवी अब्दुल हक़) से की, जो उस वक़्त औरंगाबाद में सद्र-मुहतमिम तालीमात होकर आए थे। मुसन्निफ़ ने भी उसे अपने बाग़ की निगरानी पर रखा और नूर ख़ाँ का अलाउंस भी जारी रहा। नूर ख़ाँ ने आख़िर उम्र तक बड़ी मेहनत, दियानत और अपने काम के मुनासिब तरीक़े से यह ख़िदमत निभाई।

Later Noor Khan took service under Dr. Suraj-ul-Hasan, the head of the education department at Aurangabad and Hyderabad. The doctor treated him with kindness and friendliness, appointing him caretaker of his garden on a monthly allowance of five rupees. Noor Khan carried out this responsibility with great honesty - when offered gifts such as a gun and a pistol over the garden, he refused, saying this was his duty, not something to be rewarded. When Dr. Suraj-ul-Hasan was promoted and moved to Hyderabad, he recommended Noor Khan to the author (Moulvi Abdul Haq) himself, who had by then arrived in Aurangabad as head of education. The author too kept him on as caretaker of his garden, and Noor Khan's allowance continued. Noor Khan carried out this duty with great hard work, honesty and a proper sense of his responsibilities right until the end of his life.

नूर ख़ाँ हमेशा मेहनत और दियानत से काम करता था, मगर साथ ही अपनी इज़्ज़त का भी बहुत ख़याल रखता था और बड़े-बड़े लोगों में भी दोस्ती के लिए मशहूर था। उसका घर हमेशा मेहमानों से आबाद रहता, और वह अपने बहुत क़लील (कम) मआश (आमदनी) के बावजूद बड़ी फ़य्याज़ी से उनकी दावत करता था। उसकी बीवी भी नेक और कुशल थी, और घर में शौहर की खुशी के मुताबिक़ खाना पकाकर मेहमानों की ख़ातिरदारी में उसका साथ देती थी। नूर ख़ाँ चेहरे से हमेशा मुस्कराते हुए, ज़िंदा-दिल और दिल से वफ़ादार शख़्स था; वह जवान और बूढ़े दोनों में घुल-मिल जाता था, ग़म में लोगों के पास आता और हमेशा दूसरों को भी ख़ुश रखने की कोशिश करता था।

Noor Khan always worked with diligence and honesty, but also carefully guarded his own dignity and was known for his friendships even among important people. His home was always full of guests, and despite his very modest income he entertained them with great generosity. His wife too was good-natured and skilled, cooking food to her husband's liking and joining him in hosting guests. Noor Khan always wore a smile, was warm-hearted and loyal at heart; he mixed easily with both young and old, stood by people in times of grief, and always tried to keep others happy too.

मुसन्निफ़ बताते हैं कि डॉक्टर सिराज-उल-हसन जब भी औरंगाबाद आते, नूर ख़ाँ उनका सारा रुपया-पैसा अपने हवाले करने को कहते, और नूर ख़ाँ हर ख़र्च का पाई-पाई का हिसाब रखता था। कभी-कभी हिसाब से थोड़े ज़्यादा या कम पैसे बच जाते, तो नूर ख़ाँ ख़ुद ब-ख़ुद इसकी वजह पूछता या ख़त लिखकर मालूम करता, और ज़ियादा पैसे बच जाएँ तो चुपचाप हज़म कर लेने के बजाय वापस भेज देता था। मुसन्निफ़ कहते हैं कि नूर ख़ाँ खरे और वफ़ादार दिल का इंसान था, नेक-नफ़्स, हमदर्द और मेहनती। मुसन्निफ़ अफ़सोस के साथ लिखते हैं कि ऐसे लोग बहुत कम मिलते हैं, और आख़िर में यह ख़्वाहिश ज़ाहिर करते हैं कि काश हम में ऐसे नूर ख़ाँ जैसे लोग बहुत हों - क्योंकि क़ौमें ऐसे ही (मेहनती, दियानतदार और वफ़ादार) लोगों से बनती हैं।

The author recounts that whenever Dr. Suraj-ul-Hasan visited Aurangabad, he would hand all his money over to Noor Khan's keeping, and Noor Khan kept an account of every last paisa spent. If sometimes a little more or less money than expected remained, Noor Khan would himself ask or write to find out the reason, and if extra money was left over he would return it rather than quietly keep it. The author says Noor Khan was a man of true, loyal heart - good-natured, compassionate and hardworking. The author writes with regret that such people are rarely found, and closes by wishing that we had many more people like Noor Khan - because nations, he says, are built from exactly such people.
