غزل Ghazal - Sheikh Muhammad Ibrahim Zauq

भावार्थ: ज़िंदगी हमें लाई और हम आए, मौत हमें ले चली और हम चले गए - न अपनी ख़ुशी से आए, न अपनी ख़ुशी से गए। बेहतर तो यही होता कि दिल दुनिया से न लगे, मगर क्या करें - बे-दिली से भी काम नहीं चलता। इस दुनिया की बिसात पर हम भी उस नासमझ जुआरी जैसे हैं जो जो भी चाल चलता है वह बहुत ग़लत साबित होती है। अगर हज़रत ख़िज़्र जैसी लंबी उम्र भी मिल जाए, तो भी मौत के वक़्त यही कहेंगे कि हम यहाँ रहे ही कितना - अभी आए, अभी चल दिए। अपनी अक़्ल पर घमंड मत करो, जो होना है वही होगा - न तुम्हारी समझदारी काम आएगी, न मेरी। मौत के रास्ते पर दुनिया ने आज तक किसी का साथ नहीं दिया, फिर भी तुम भी चलते चलो, जब तक ज़िंदगी की चाल चलती रहे। मक़्ते में ज़ौक़ कहते हैं - हम तो अपने शौक़ की चाहत में इस दुनिया रूपी बाग़ से जा रहे हैं; अब सुबह की ठंडी हवा (बाद-ए-सबा) चाहे चले या न चले, हमें इसकी कोई परवाह नहीं।

Meaning: life brought us and we arrived, death has come to take us and we shall go - we came neither by our own wish nor shall we leave by it. It would be better if the heart did not attach itself to the world, but what can we do - things do not run without some attachment either. On this chessboard of the world we too are like the foolish gambler whose every move turns out badly. Even if we were granted a lifespan as long as Khizr's, at the moment of death we would still say we barely stayed here at all - we had just arrived, and just left. Do not be proud of your intellect; whatever is destined to happen will happen - neither your wisdom nor mine will be of any use. On the path to annihilation the world has never accompanied anyone, yet you too should keep walking as long as life's course carries you along. In the closing couplet Zauq says he is leaving this garden (the world) on the wind of his own longing - now whether the morning breeze blows or not is no concern of his.
