غزل Ghazal - Yaas Yagana Changezi

भावार्थ: नैतिकता (अदब) ने दिल की माँगों को क्या-क्या नहीं उठाया, तो हवस (लालच) ने भी शौक़ के पहलुओं को क्या-क्या नहीं दबाया - यानी ज़िंदगी में नेकी और लालच की कशमकश हर वक़्त चलती रहती है। इसी धोखे ने इंसान को मारा है कि 'कल' अभी बहुत दूर है - इसी आज-कल के फेर में हमने बेकार कितने दिन गँवाए। शायर महबूब से कहते हैं कि किसी भी रूप में आकर अपना दीदार दे दो - इस दुनिया में बादशाह और फ़क़ीर, दोनों ने अपने-अपने रंग दिखाए हैं। पहाड़ काटने वाले (फ़रहाद जैसे अज़ीम इंसान) आख़िर ज़मीन के आगे हार गए, जबकि उसी ज़मीन में बड़े-बड़े दरिया समा जाते हैं - यानी फ़ितरत के आगे इंसानी कोशिश की हद है। अगर तुम बुलंद हो, तभी तुम पर पस्ती (नीचेपन) का राज़ खुलता है - बड़े-बड़े लोगों के भी क़दम कई बार डगमगाए हैं। ख़ुशी में अपने ही क़दम चूम लूँ तो यह वाजिब है, क्योंकि महबूब मेरी लग़्ज़िशों (ग़लतियों) पर भी मुस्कुराया है। मक़्ते में यगाना कहते हैं - ख़ुदा ही जानता है कि मैं असल में कौन हूँ, क्या हूँ; ख़ुद अपनी ही पहचान पर दिल में कितने शक आए हैं।

Meaning: how much has ethics (adab) demanded of the heart, and how much has greed (hawas) suppressed the sides of desire - life is a constant tussle between virtue and greed. It is this very deception that has undone us - that 'tomorrow' is still far away - and in this game of today-and-tomorrow we have wasted so many days in vain. The poet asks the beloved to appear in any form at all and grant a glimpse - in this world both kings and beggars have each shown their own colours. Those who cut through mountains (Farhad-like great figures) were finally defeated by the earth, while that very earth swallows entire rivers - human effort has its limits before nature. Only when you are elevated does the secret of lowliness reveal itself to you - even the feet of great and mighty people have stumbled many times. It is fitting that I kiss my own feet in joy, because she has smiled so much at my very slips and faults. In the closing couplet Yagana says - only God knows who I really am, what I am; doubts about my own identity have arisen in my heart so very often.
