غزل Ghazal - Fani Badayuni

भावार्थ: दुनिया मँहगी है या सस्ती, शायर को इसकी कोई परवाह नहीं; मौत मुफ़्त भी मिले तो वे न लें, क्योंकि इंसान की हस्ती (वजूद) की कोई असली क़ीमत ही नहीं है। शायर ने आबाद बस्तियाँ भी देखी हैं और वीराने भी - मगर दिल ऐसी निराली बस्ती है जो एक बार उजड़ जाए तो फिर कभी नहीं बसती। जान जैसी अनमोल चीज़ भी एक निगाह के बदले बिक जाती है, आगे गाहक (महबूब) की मरज़ी है - इन क़ीमतों में तो यह सौदा सस्ता ही कहलाएगा। तेरे बिना यह दुनिया सूनी है, आँखों का क्या हाल हुआ - जब दुनिया बसी हुई थी तब भी और अब भी दुनिया बसी हुई है (मगर दिल उजड़ गया है)। सूखे हुए आँसू भी दिल भर आने पर उमड़ आते हैं; दिल पर मानो बादल की घटा छाई है, जो न खुलकर बरसती है न छँटती है। दिल का उजड़ना तो आसान है, ऐ ज़ालिम, मगर उसे फिर से बसाना आसान नहीं - बस्ती बसाना कोई खेल नहीं, वह धीरे-धीरे, बसते-बसते ही बसती है। फ़ानी कहते हैं - जिस आँख में कभी आँसुओं और दिल के लहू की कोई कमी न थी, अफ़सोस, वही आँख अब पानी की सिर्फ़ दो बूँदों को तरसती है।

Meaning: whether the world is expensive or cheap is no concern of the poet's; even if death were offered free, he would not take it, for a human being's existence has no true worth at all. The poet has seen both settled towns and desolate wastelands - but the heart is such a strange settlement that once ruined, it never resettles. A thing as precious as a life is sold away for a single glance, and after that it is the buyer's (the beloved's) will - at such a price, the bargain is indeed cheap. Without you the world feels empty - what has become of these eyes? Whether the world was settled before or is settled now (makes no difference, since the heart itself lies in ruins). Even tears long since dried well up again when the heart overflows; a cloud-like gloom hangs over the heart, neither breaking into rain nor clearing away. Ruining the heart is easy, O cruel one, but resettling it is not - building a settlement is no game, it comes together only gradually, settlement by settlement. Fani says: the eye that once never lacked tears or the heart's own blood now, alas, longs for just two drops of water.
