कैलाश और उसके काफ़िले के मुसाफ़िर पहाड़ों के एक दर्रे से गुज़रकर मोटी नगर की एक ख़ूबसूरत वादी में उतरे - चारों तरफ़ बर्फ़-पोश चोटियाँ, हरे-भरे बाग़ और आबशारें थीं, मगर लारी स्टैंड पर पहुँचकर कैलाश को एक ग़रीब और उजड़ी हुई बस्ती की झलक भी दिखी, जिसने उसकी ख़ुशी को कुछ हद तक मायूसी में बदल दिया। रास्ते में एक छोटे पत्थर पर बैठकर कैलाश ने पीने का पानी लिया; वहीं उसे एक बाग़ के पास आवाज़ सुनाई दी - एक तेरह-चौदह बरस की दुबली-पतली, ग़रीब मगर ख़ूबसूरत लड़की अपने चार-पाँच साल के छोटे भाई को अपने घुटनों पर लिटाए, उसे थपथपाकर सुला रही थी। कैलाश ने उससे बात करते हुए जाना कि उसका नाम रजनी है और उसके माँ-बाप गुज़र चुके हैं। रजनी ने बताया कि वह ख़ुद कुछ काम नहीं करती, बल्कि लोगों की बकरियाँ चराती है, क्योंकि उसका छोटा भाई भीखू बीमार है और रात-भर भूख से रोता है, कोई उसे खिलाने वाला भी नहीं। रजनी की इस बद-गुमानी पर कैलाश का दिल पिघल गया।

Kailash and his fellow travellers crossed a mountain pass and descended into a beautiful valley near Moti Nagar - snow-capped peaks, lush orchards and waterfalls all around. But at the lorry stand, Kailash also caught sight of a poor, run-down settlement, which dimmed his earlier delight into a certain sadness. Along the way he sat on a rock to drink some water, and near an orchard he heard a voice - a thin, poor but pretty thirteen or fourteen-year-old girl was rocking her four or five-year-old little brother on her lap, patting him to sleep. Talking to her, Kailash learned her name was Rajni and that her parents had passed away. Rajni explained that she herself did not really 'work' - she herded other people's goats, because her little brother Bhikhu was ill and cried all night from hunger, and there was no one else to feed him. Hearing this hardship, Kailash's heart melted.

कैलाश ने पूछा कि क्या वह भीखू की देखभाल के लिए कोई नौकरी नहीं रखती। रजनी ने जवाब दिया कि अगर वह कोई मुलाज़िम रखे तो उसे बहुत मेहनताना देना पड़ेगा, जो उसके बस का नहीं। कैलाश ने कहा कि उसके साथ उसके छोटे भाई और बहन भी ठीक रहेंगे - इस पर लड़की हैरत से कैलाश को देखने लगी, गोया वह इतना यक़ीन ही न कर पाई कि कोई उसे ऐसे यूँ ही काम पर रखने को तैयार होगा। कैलाश ने जवाब में हँसते हुए 'हाँ, बिल्कुल सच' कहा - इतने पर लड़की देर तक हैरत से देखती रही, फिर उसकी आँखों में आँसू आ गए और वह कैलाश के पाँव पर गिर पड़ी, शुक्र-गुज़ारी से।

Kailash asked whether she would not simply hire someone to look after Bhikhu. Rajni replied that hiring a servant would cost far more wages than she could ever afford. Kailash said that with him, her little brother and sister would also be looked after well - at which the girl stared at him in astonishment, as if she could scarcely believe anyone would actually take her on this way. Kailash, laughing, repeated 'yes, absolutely true.' The girl kept staring in disbelief for a long while, then tears welled up in her eyes and she fell at Kailash's feet, overcome with gratitude.

रजनी बापू जी (कैलाश) को ख़ुश करने के लिए कुछ बोली, मगर बापू जी के मुँह से कोई जवाब न निकला। रजनी की ख़ुशी रात-भर सो नहीं सकी - उसकी आँखों के सामने आज हासिल हुई ख़ुशी बार-बार करवट लेती रही, दरख़्तों की झाड़ियों से गुज़रते सफ़ेदी लिए सुबह भी नज़र आने लगी। रोज़ाना का ख़ौफ़ - रात को कोई भयानक शक्ल वाला भेड़िया दरवाज़े को छूने की आवाज़ - आज उसे महसूस नहीं हुआ; बल्कि सब भाई-बहनों को सुलाकर वह ख़ुद भी सामने पहाड़ों की सफ़ेदी में चुपके से सो गई, जो उसके सामने भरी-पूरी सुबह और फिर पेश आराम भरी रात का इशारा दे रही थी।

Rajni tried to say something to please Bapuji (Kailash), but he gave no reply. That night, Rajni was too happy to sleep - the joy of the day kept turning over in her mind until the pale light of dawn began showing through the branches. The nightly fear - the sound of some monstrous wolf-like shape scratching at the door - did not trouble her that night; she put all her siblings to sleep and, watching the whitening mountains ahead, quietly drifted off herself, sensing that a fuller, easier morning and night finally lay ahead.

रजनी अपने पाँचों छोटे भाई-बहनों को नज़रअंदाज़ नहीं करती थी - एक-दूसरे से बे-ख़बर चैन से सोए हुए उन बच्चों को देखकर रजनी सोचती थी कि आज सुबह वह जल्दी उठकर अपने भाई-बहनों को चढ़ाई की पाँच सौ फ़ुट पर बापू जी के पास पहुँचा देगी। फिर रोना क्या होगा? पहनने को कपड़े मिलेंगे और रात को ओढ़ने के लिए भी बहुत दूर-दराज़ की ठिठुरती फ़िक्र में सोने की जगह मिलेगी। सूरज और चढ़ता हुआ रजनी और उसके भाई अपने साथ चढ़ाई कर रहे थे, आख़िर उन्होंने बुलंद पहाड़ों को पीछे छोड़कर अपनी मंज़िल की सुर्ख़ चोटी को झलक दिखा ही दी।

Rajni never neglected any of her five younger siblings - watching them sleep peacefully, unaware of one another, she thought about how early the next morning she would climb the five-hundred-foot slope with them to reach Bapuji. Then what would there be left to cry about? They would get clothes to wear, and a warmer place to sleep at night instead of shivering in worry far from anywhere. As the sun climbed, so did Rajni and her siblings, leaving the tall mountains behind them until at last the reddish peak of their destination came into view.

जब कैलाश चाय पी रहा था, उसके नौकर ने आकर ख़बर दी कि 'कल वाली लड़की आई है' और उसके साथ 'एक छोटा-सा पाँच बच्चों का जत्था' भी है। बाहर आकर देखा तो रजनी अपने चार-पाँच छोटे, मैले-कुचैले, भूखे बच्चों के साथ खड़ी थी, जिनकी नाक से सुर्ख़ी और आँखों से उम्मीद झलक रही थी। कैलाश ने पूछा 'यह सब कौन हैं?' रजनी ने ख़ुश होकर एक-एक का नाम बताया - यह सब उसके भाई-बहन हैं: यिलतू, राम, रामो, कालू, तुलसी। कैलाश हैरान रह गया - उसने सोचा था कि रजनी सिर्फ़ अपने भाई भीखू के साथ आएगी, इतना बड़ा जत्था नहीं। रजनी की मासूम मगर संजीदा सूरत में कैलाश को अपनी ज़िम्मेदारी का सारा बोझ नज़र आ गया।

As Kailash was having tea, his servant came to announce that 'yesterday's girl has come' along with 'a small group of five children.' Coming outside, Kailash saw Rajni standing with four or five small, unkempt, hungry children, their noses reddened by cold and their eyes full of hope. Kailash asked, 'who are all these?' Rajni happily named each one - they were all her siblings: Yiltu, Ram, Ramo, Kalu, Tulsi. Kailash was astonished - he had assumed Rajni would only bring her ailing brother Bhikhu, not this whole group. In Rajni's innocent yet grave expression, Kailash suddenly saw the full weight of the responsibility he had taken on.

कैलाश उन्हें यूँ ही रुख़्सत करता, इससे पहले रजनी रो पड़ी और गिड़गिड़ाने लगी, कुछ पाकर नजात पाने की उम्मीद में। कैलाश ने दो-दो रुपये उसके हाथ में रख दिए। दो रुपयों से बहुत कुछ नहीं ख़रीदा जा सकता, फिर भी रजनी अपनी फ़ौज को लेकर बाज़ार की तरफ़ चल दी, और एक दुकान के सामने सबको खिलाने-पिलाने लगी - पहले आठ आने की पूरियाँ लीं, फिर आठ आने की और, फिर चार आने की और लीं। इस तरह दोनों रुपये ख़त्म हो गए, लेकिन बच्चों की भूख पूरी तरह न मिट सकी। दोपहर बाद ख़ाली हाथ पैदल क़ाफ़िले की तरफ़ चढ़ते हुए, थके-माँदे उस दुख के साथ उतरने लगे, गोया आज उन्हें असल ज़रूरत महसूस हुई हो कि सुबह-सवेरे यहाँ न आते तो शाम को न ही चढ़ते और न ही उतरते। एक-एक करके सूरज ढलने पर सब बच्चे बे-आवाज़, बे-रोना-धोना, बे-इज़हार-ए-हसरत, चुपचाप वापस लौटे। पहुँचते ही थकी हुई तुलसी ने आहिस्ता से कहा, 'भूख लगी है,' फिर रामो ने भी कहा, दिल की उम्मीदों के साथ पेट की पूरियाँ भी ग़ायब हो चुकी थीं। रजनी बच्चों को अंधेरे और भूख और डर की गोद में छोड़कर, प्रवेसियों को छोड़कर, दरिया के किनारे निकल खड़ी हुई, गोया इम्तिहान की एक और घड़ी सामने थी।

Before Kailash could simply send them away, Rajni broke down crying and pleaded, hoping to gain something that would bring her relief. Kailash placed two rupees in her hand. Two rupees could not buy much, but Rajni still led her whole troop toward the market and, in front of a shop, began feeding them all - first eight annas' worth of puris, then another eight annas' worth, then four annas' more - until both rupees were spent, yet the children's hunger was still not fully satisfied. Late that afternoon they trudged back up toward the camp empty-handed and exhausted, as though only now realising that if they had not come down that morning full of hope, they would not have had to climb back up empty in the evening either. As the sun set, one by one the children returned silently, without crying, without complaint, without any word of longing. As soon as they arrived, exhausted little Tulsi said softly, 'I'm hungry,' and then Ramo said the same - along with their hopes, the puris in their stomachs had also vanished. Rajni left the younger children in the lap of darkness, hunger and fear, and stepped away toward the riverbank alone, as though yet another trial awaited her.
