اودیس سے آنے والے بتا! Odes se Aane Waale Bata! (Tell Me, O One Who Comes From the Homeland!)

भावार्थ: ऐ (अपने) देस से आने वाले, मुझे बता! वतन के दोस्त किस हाल में हैं? वतन का कनआन (ख़ूबसूरत, धन्य धरती) किस रंग-रूप में है? वह वतन का बाग़, वह जन्नत जैसा वतन, वह सरो (सजीला दरख़्त) जैसा वतन, वह रैहान (ख़ुशबूदार फूल) जैसा वतन - अब कैसा है, मुझे बता!

Meaning: O you who come from my homeland, tell me! In what state are the friends of the homeland? In what colour is the homeland's Canaan (its blessed, beautiful land)? That garden of the homeland, that paradise-like homeland, that cypress-like homeland, that fragrant-flower-like homeland - tell me, O one who comes from the homeland!

भावार्थ: क्या अभी भी वहाँ बाग़ों में मस्ताना (मदमस्त) हवाएँ चलती हैं? क्या अभी भी वहाँ पर्बत पर घने काले बादल (घनघोर घटाएँ) छाए रहते हैं? क्या अभी भी वहाँ की बरखा (बारिश) उसी तरह दिलों को भाती (अच्छी लगती) है?

Meaning: do intoxicating breezes still blow through the gardens there? Do dense dark clouds still gather over the mountain there? Does the rain there still please hearts just the same as before?

भावार्थ: क्या शाम पड़ने पर गलियों में अभी भी वही दिलचस्प अंधेरा होता है? और सड़कों की धुंधली शमओं (लालटेनों) पर सायों (परछाइयों) का बसेरा (डेरा) होता है? क्या बाग़ों की घनी शाख़ों में उसी तरह सवेरा होता है जैसे पहले होता था?

Meaning: does that same delightful darkness still fall over the lanes at evening? Do shadows still gather round the dim street-lamps? Does dawn still break through the thick garden branches the way it used to?

भावार्थ: क्या अभी भी (उस) मंदर से नाक़ूस (शंख/घंटा) की आवाज़ आती है? क्या अभी भी मुक़द्दस (पवित्र) मस्जिद पर मस्ताना अज़ान गूँजती (थरआती) है? और शाम के रंगीन सायों पर अज़मत (बुज़ुर्गी, महानता) की झलक छा जाती है?

Meaning: does the sound of the conch still come from the temple? Does the intoxicating call to prayer still resound over the sacred mosque? And does a glow of grandeur still spread over evening's coloured shadows?

भावार्थ: क्या आम के ऊँचे पेड़ों पर अभी भी वह पपीहे बोलते हैं? शाख़ों के रेशमी (हरीरी) पर्दों में नग़्मों (गीतों) के ख़ज़ाने खोल देते हैं? सावन के रसीले गीतों से तालाब में मानो अमरस (अमृत जैसा रस) घोल देते हैं?

Meaning: do the papeeha birds still call from the tall mango trees? Do they still open treasures of song within the silken curtain of branches? Do they still dissolve nectar-sweetness into the pond with the juicy songs of the monsoon month of Saawan?

भावार्थ: क्या मदरसे की वह शादाब (हरी-भरी) फ़िज़ा अभी भी पहले जैसी मासूम है? कुछ भूले हुए दिन गुज़रे थे जिनमें वह ख़्वाब जैसी मिसाली (आदर्श) फ़िज़ा थी। वह खेल, वह हमसन (हमउम्र साथी), वह मैदान, वह चाँदनी रात की ख़्वाबगह जैसी फ़िज़ा - क्या वैसी ही है?

Meaning: is the school's lush, green air still as innocent as before? Some forgotten days had passed in that dream-like, ideal atmosphere. That play, those age-mates, that field, that moonlit air like a chamber of dreams - is it still the same?

भावार्थ: क्या अभी भी किसी के सीने में हमारी चाह बाक़ी है, बता? क्या अभी भी यारों में से कोई हमें याद करके आह भरता है, बता? ऐ देस, बता, ख़ुदा के वास्ते बता!

Meaning: does anyone's heart still hold longing for us, tell me? Does any friend among them still sigh, remembering us, tell me? O homeland, tell me, for God's sake tell me!

भावार्थ: क्या हम वतन के बाग़ों की मस्ताना फ़िज़ाएँ भूल गए? क्या सावन की घटाएँ भूल गए? क्या जंगल की हवाएँ भूल गए? (यह सवाल शायर ख़ुद अपने आप से भी पूछता है)

Meaning: have we forgotten the intoxicating air of the homeland's gardens? Have we forgotten the monsoon clouds? Have we forgotten the forest breezes? (Here the poet turns the question upon himself too)

भावार्थ: क्या गाँव पर अभी भी सावन में बरखा की बहारें छाई रहती हैं? क्या मासूम घरों से भुने हुए (भोजे के) भुट्टे की आवाज़ें अभी भी आती हैं? और अपने मैके की याद में सखियाँ मस्त (नगरी हुई) होकर गाती हैं?

Meaning: does the bloom of the rains still spread over the village in the month of Saawan? Do the sounds of roasting corn still come from the humble homes? And do the village girlfriends, lost in remembering their parental home, still sing?

भावार्थ: क्या अभी भी पुराने खंडरों पर तारीख़ (इतिहास) की इबरत (सीख/चेतावनी) छाई हुई है? उन पुराने उजड़े मंदर पर मायूसी और हसरत छाई है? छावनी के सुनसान घरों पर वीरानी और रिक़्क़त (नरमी/रुलाई) छाई है? (यहीं नज़्म ख़त्म होती है - उम्मीद की जगह मायूसी छा जाती है)

Meaning: do the old ruins still bear history's solemn warning? Does despair and longing still hang over that old, deserted temple? Does desolation and sorrow still hang over the empty houses of the settlement? (Here the poem ends - hope gives way to despair)
