جلوۂ دربارِ دہلی Jalwa-e-Darbar-e-Dehli (The Splendour of the Delhi Durbar)

भावार्थ: सर पर शौक़ का जुनून सवार था, तो हम भी दिल्ली जा पहुँचे और देख आए। जो कुछ देखा अच्छा ही देखा - क्या बताएँ, क्या-क्या देख डाला।

Meaning: with a passionate longing on my mind, I too went and saw Delhi. Whatever I saw, I saw as fine - how can I even begin to tell you everything I saw.

भावार्थ: जमुना जी के क़तार में सजे घाट देखे, उभरता हुआ नदी का पाट देखा। सबसे ऊँची लाट (मीनार) देखी, और हज़रत ड्यूक ऑफ़ कनॉट को भी देखा।

Meaning: I saw the Jamuna's banks lined up in a row, saw the river's rising expanse. I saw the tallest pillar of all, and I saw His Highness the Duke of Connaught too.

भावार्थ: पैदल फ़ौज और घुड़सवार दस्ते देखे, गोरे भी देखे और काले भी। संगीनें और भाले देखे, और बैंड बजाने वाले भी देखे।

Meaning: I saw infantry platoons and cavalry, saw white soldiers and dark-skinned ones. I saw bayonets and lances, and I saw the bands playing.

भावार्थ: तंबुओं के एक पूरे जंगल में जश्न-सा माहौल देखा, इसी वीराने में रौनक़ देखी। ब्रह्मा (यानी सिरजनहार जैसा नज़ारा) देखा, वरंगल (भीड़-भाड़ का मुहावरा) देखा - इज़्ज़त चाहने वालों की भीड़ का हुजूम देखा।

Meaning: in a whole jungle of tents I saw a festive gathering, saw a fair spring up in this very wilderness. I saw a Brahma-like spectacle, saw a crush of crowds - the milling throng of status-seekers all craving recognition.

भावार्थ: हर कैंप से सड़कें और पाइपें बिछी हुई थीं, हर पाइप से पानी जारी था। हर लैंप से नूर (रोशनी) की मौजें उठ रही थीं, और हर जंप (बिजली के तार के जोड़) से तेज़ी जारी थी।

Meaning: roads and pipes ran out from every camp, water flowed steadily from every pipe. Waves of light streamed from every lamp, and current ran fast through every electric junction/jump.

भावार्थ: डाली पर नारंगी (संतरा) देखा, महफ़िल में सारंगी (साज़) देखी। बे-रंगी और रंग-बिरंगी दोनों देखीं - ग़रज़ दुनिया की सारी रंगा-रंगी देख ली।

Meaning: I saw an orange hanging on a branch, saw a sarangi being played in the gathering. I saw both the colourless and the colourful - in short, I saw the whole world's diversity of colour on display.

भावार्थ: भले-भले, सूझ-बूझ वाले लोगों तक को इस चमक-दमक में बहका और भटका हुआ देखा, भीड़ में धक्के खाते देखा। मुँह भले ही उतरा हुआ (थका-हारा) दिखे, मगर उनका दिल दरबार में ही रमा हुआ देखा।

Meaning: I saw even the most sensible people get dazzled and led astray in this spectacle, saw them jostled about in the crowd. Even though their faces looked worn and drooping, I saw that their hearts remained wholly attached to the Durbar.

भावार्थ: हाथी देखे, भारी-भरकम देखे, उनका चलना धीमा-धीमा 'धम धम' करता देखा। उनकी सुनहरी झूलों (सजावटी चादरों) की रोशनी का आलम देखा - वह चमचमाती चमक देखी।

Meaning: I saw elephants, saw them huge and heavy, saw their gait moving slow and heavy - 'thud, thud'. I saw the dazzling glow of their gold-threaded trappings - saw that glittering shimmer.

भावार्थ: जामा मस्जिद के आस-पास का इलाक़ा (भीड़ से) भरा हुआ था, हर तरफ़ रोशनियाँ चमक रही थीं। कोई किसी की बात सुनने वाला (सामे) नहीं था - सब के सब सिर्फ़ देखने के ही लालची (तामे) थे।

Meaning: the area around the Jama Masjid was packed full, lights were shining brilliantly on every side. No one there was listening to anyone else - everyone, without exception, was greedy only for the sight itself.

भावार्थ: सड़क पर लाली (जगमगाहट) कटती-सी बिखरती देखी, भीड़ में साँस तक घुटती हुई देखी। आतिशबाज़ी छूटती हुई देखी, और लुत्फ़ की दौलत खुले हाथों लुटती हुई देखी।

Meaning: I saw a red glow streak across the road, saw breath itself grow stifled in the crowd. I saw fireworks bursting forth, saw the wealth of pleasure being lavishly spent.

भावार्थ: एक भली-चंगी, बढ़िया चौकी (मेज़/चबूतरा) देखी, जिसे ख़ूब चख कर परखा हुआ देखा। हर तरफ़ नेमतें सजी हुई देखीं - शहद और दूध की इफ़रात इतनी कि मक्खियाँ मँडराती दिखीं।

Meaning: I saw one fine, well-appointed food-stall, its dishes plainly well-tasted and relished. I saw delicacies laid out on every side - honey and milk so abundant that even the flies gathered on them.

भावार्थ: किसी का हिस्सा मन-ओ-सलवा (आसमानी नेमत, यानी बेहतरीन खाना) था, किसी का हिस्सा बस थोड़ा-सा हलवा। किसी का हिस्सा सिर्फ़ भीड़ और धक्का-मुक्की थी - और मेरा हिस्सा तो बस दूर से एक झलक भर था।

Meaning: one person's share was manna-and-quails (the finest heavenly fare), another's share was just a little halwa. Someone else's share was only crowd and jostling - and my own share was merely a distant glimpse.

भावार्थ: ब्रितानी राज का उरूज (शिखर) देखा, तख़्त-ओ-ताज की चमक-दमक देखी। आज के ज़माने का रंग-ढंग देखा, और (वाइसराय लॉर्ड) कर्ज़न महाराज का चेहरा भी देख लिया।

Meaning: I saw the zenith of British rule, saw the radiant glow of throne and crown. I saw the temper of the present age, and I saw the very face of Curzon Maharaj (the Viceroy who presided over the Durbar).

भावार्थ: उनके (अंग्रेज़ी राज के) बीसियों बंदरगाह चाँद तक पहुँचे हुए हैं, उनके अधीन सातों समंदर हैं। उनके अंदर हिकमत और दानिश (सूझ-बूझ) कूट-कूट कर भरी है - हर एक अपनी जगह पर मानो सिकंदर है।

Meaning: their (the British Empire's) twenty ports reach as high as the moon, and all seven seas lie under their dominion. Wisdom and sagacity run deep within them - each one of them a Sikandar (Alexander) in his own right.

भावार्थ: उनके बख़्त (क़िस्मत) की बुलंदी सब को नसीब हो रही थी, गोया सातों आसमान भी उन्हीं के हों। महफ़िल भी उनकी थी, साक़ी (जाम पिलाने वाला) भी उनका - बस मेरी आँखें ही मेरी रह गईं, बाक़ी सब कुछ उन्हीं का था।

Meaning: theirs was the towering height of good fortune, as if the seven revolving heavens themselves belonged to them. The gathering was theirs, the cup-bearer was theirs - only my own eyes remained mine; everything else there belonged to them.

भावार्थ: हम तो बस उनके भले चाहने वाले हैं, और यहाँ सब के सब ऐसे ही (ख़ैर-ख़्वाह) हैं। उनके राज के तौर-तरीक़े बड़े उमदा (बेहतरीन) हैं - ग़रज़ यहाँ ऐश-ओ-आराम का सारा सामान मौजूद है।

Meaning: as for us, we are simply well-wishers of their rule - and everyone here is exactly the same. Their reign has such excellent, fine ways - in short, every means of pleasure and delight is on display here.
