سلطان Sultan

दादा बाईं तरफ़ चल रहे थे, दाईं तरफ़ सुल्तान - दादा के हाथ में सुल्तान के लिए ख़रीदी हुई एक कागज़ी, खोखली घोड़ी थी। रास्ते में एक भिकारी फ़क़ीर ने भीख माँगी, तो सुल्तान ने दादा से कुछ देने को कहा। दादा पहले झुँझला कर टाल देते हैं, मगर सुल्तान बार-बार ज़िद करता है और आख़िरकार दादा नरम पड़ जाते हैं। रास्ते भर दादा-पोते की मीठी-सी नोक-झोंक और बातचीत चलती रहती है, जिसमें दादा अपने बचपन की यादें भी सुल्तान को सुनाते हैं।

Dada was walking on the left, Sultan on the right - in Dada's hand was a hollow paper toy horse he had just bought for Sultan. Along the way a beggar asked for alms, and Sultan urged Dada to give something. Dada brushes him off irritably at first, but Sultan insists again and again, and Dada eventually softens. All the way home grandfather and grandson keep up a warm, teasing conversation, in which Dada also shares memories from his own childhood with Sultan.

दादा सुल्तान को अपने बचपन में देखा हुआ एक मदारी का तमाशा सुनाते हैं, जिसमें मदारी ने किसी लड़के को कपड़े में लपेट कर या किसी तरकीब से 'ग़ायब' कर दिया था और फिर उसे वापस भी ला दिया था। दादा का बयान इतना दिलचस्प था कि सुल्तान इस पर बार-बार सवाल पूछने लगा - चीज़ें कहाँ ग़ायब हो जाती हैं, क्या वे बदली हुई शक्ल में वापस आती हैं। दादा भी उसकी मासूम जिज्ञासा से खेलते हुए उसे और क़िस्से सुनाते रहे। घर पहुँचकर सुल्तान अपने खिलौनों और गोलियों (कंचों) से यही खेल दोहराने लगा - उन्हें छिपाकर या ज़मीन में गाड़कर यह देखने की कोशिश करता कि क्या वे वापस आती हैं।

Dada tells Sultan about a magic show he had watched in his own childhood, where the magician wrapped a boy in cloth or used some trick to make him 'vanish', and then brought him back too. Dada's account was so gripping that Sultan kept asking question after question about it - where do things disappear to, do they come back in a changed form. Dada, playing along with his grandson's innocent curiosity, kept telling him more such tales. Once home, Sultan began repeating this very game with his own toys and marbles - hiding them or burying them in the ground to see whether they would return.

वक़्त गुज़रता गया और एक रात दादा चल बसे। घर में मातम छा गया - ग़ुस्ल, कफ़न-दफ़न की तैयारियाँ होने लगीं। ख़ाला ज़ैनब और घर की दूसरी औरतें सुल्तान को असल माजरे से दूर रखने की कोशिश करती रहीं, उसे बहलाती-फुसलाती रहीं, ताकि वह मौत की सच्चाई से बेख़बर रहे। मगर सुल्तान की मासूम नज़रों ने बहुत कुछ भाँप लिया था - उसे यह एहसास हो चुका था कि दादा 'ग़ायब' हो गए हैं और उन्हें क़ब्रिस्तान में सुला दिया गया है।

Time passed, and one night Dada quietly died. Mourning fell over the house - preparations for the ritual bath and burial began. Khala Zainab and the other women of the house tried to keep Sultan away from the real matter, distracting and soothing him so that he would stay unaware of the truth of death. But Sultan's innocent eyes had sensed a great deal already - he had come to understand that Dada had 'vanished' and had been laid to rest in the graveyard.

उस रात सुल्तान को नींद नहीं आई। मदारी के उस पुराने तमाशे का ख़याल उसके ज़ेहन में घूमता रहा - 'जो ग़ायब होता है, वह वापस भी आता है'। इसी मासूम यक़ीन के सहारे वह चुपके से घर से निकल पड़ा और अकेला क़ब्रिस्तान की तरफ़ चल दिया। वहाँ पहुँचकर उसने दादा की ताज़ा क़ब्र तलाश कर ली और अपने नन्हे हाथों और एक कटोरे-जैसी चीज़ की मदद से मिट्टी खोदनी शुरू कर दी - इस उम्मीद में कि जैसे मदारी के तमाशे में चीज़ें वापस आती थीं, वैसे ही दादा भी क़ब्र से निकल आएँगे।

That night Sultan could not sleep. The memory of that old magic show kept circling in his mind - 'whatever vanishes also comes back'. Carried by this innocent conviction, he slipped out of the house alone and walked to the graveyard by himself. There he found his grandfather's fresh grave and began digging at the earth with his small hands and a bowl-like object - hoping that, just as things returned in the magician's trick, Dada too would emerge from the grave.

घर में जब सुल्तान की ग़ैर-मौजूदगी का पता चला तो बाबूजी बदहवास होकर उसे ढूँढने निकल पड़े। आख़िरकार वे उसे क़ब्रिस्तान में, दादा की क़ब्र के पास मिट्टी खोदते हुए पाते हैं। सुल्तान को अपनी 'ग़लती' का एहसास होते ही वह फूट-फूट कर रोने लगता है और बाबूजी से मासूमियत भरे, दिल दहला देने वाले सवाल पूछता है - जैसे किसी को पैसे देकर कहना कि वह ज़रा एहतियात से खोदे ताकि दादा को कोई तकलीफ़ न हो, या बाबूजी से गुज़ारिश करना कि वे अपना हाथ उसके सर पर रखकर उसके साथ थोड़ी दूर चलें। बाबूजी उसे गले से लगा लेते हैं - यह मंज़र एक मासूम बच्चे की मौत को न समझ पाने की चीर-फाड़ कर देने वाली मासूमियत पर ख़त्म होता है।

When Sultan's absence was discovered at home, Babuji rushed out in a panic to search for him. He finally finds him at the graveyard, digging at the earth beside Dada's grave. The instant Sultan realises his 'mistake', he breaks down crying and asks Babuji innocent, heart-wrenching questions - like offering money to someone so they would dig carefully enough not to hurt Dada, or asking Babuji to walk a little way with him with a hand resting on his head. Babuji pulls him into an embrace - the story closes on this scene of a child's innocence being torn apart by his inability to understand death.
