من کا طوطا Man ka Tota (The Parrot of the Mind)

एक दिन अचानक लेखक के अपने ही जिस्म से एक तोता उड़कर बाहर निकलता है और उसके सामने आ बैठता है। हैरान लेखक पूछता है कि यह बाहर क्यों आया। थका हुआ तोता जवाब देता है कि कमरे के अंदर उसका दम घुट रहा था, इसलिए उसने मेज़ पर रखी एक बड़ी किताब को अपनी चोंच से तोड़कर, उसे कील की तरह इस्तेमाल कर, ख़ुद को बाहर निकाला। लेखक हैरान होता है कि किताब भला यूँ टूट-फूट कैसे सकती है, तो तोता जवाब देता है कि प्यार से पढ़ी गई किताब यह बर्दाश्त कर लेती है।

One day a parrot suddenly flies out of the writer's own body and comes to sit before him. Astonished, the writer asks why it has come out. The exhausted parrot explains that it was suffocating inside the room, so it broke open a big book lying on the table with its beak, using it like a nail, to free itself. When the writer wonders how a book could simply break open like that, the parrot replies that a book read with love can bear this much.

लेखक मज़ाक़ में पूछता है क्या वह किसी 'कायनात का ख़ुदा' है जो यूँ बाहर आ गया है। तोता कहता है वह बाहर तो है, मगर उसे नहीं मालूम किन कायनातों में जीना है। वह बताता है कि अगर कायनात के भेद जानने की चाहत हो तो सब कुछ देखे-समझे बग़ैर, यूँ ही कहीं भी उतरकर एक नया चेहरा उसके सामने खड़ा हो जाता है। यह सब उसके लिए अजीब तो था, मगर जिस दिन उसका वजूद उसकी अपनी ज़ात से निकलकर बाहर आया, उसे कायनात का भेद ही समझ नहीं आया - वह ख़ुद अपनी बेचैनी में परेशान रहा। उसी दिन उसकी परेशानी में उसे ख़याल आया कि उसका जिस्म पिंजरे जैसा है, जिसमें वह हमेशा क़ैद रहा है। तोता अपने बाज़ू और पर को देखकर सोचता रहा, और आख़िरकार शाम को वह फिर लेखक के 'मन' के क़रीब आकर बैठ गया और अपनी पूरी दास्तान सुनाने लगा।

The writer jokingly asks if the parrot is some 'god of a universe' come out into the open. The parrot says it is out, but does not know which universe it must now live in - if one wants to know the secrets of the universe, it explains, one simply lands somewhere without seeing or understanding anything, and a new face appears before it. All this felt strange to the parrot, and on the very day its own being separated from the writer and came out, it could not grasp any secret of the universe at all - it only felt its own restlessness. That same day, in its confusion, it realised its body (the writer's body) had been like a cage in which it had always been imprisoned. Looking at its own wings and feathers, the parrot kept thinking, and by evening it came back to sit close to the writer's 'mind' again and began telling its whole story.

तोता बताता है कि वह बहुत दूर एक जंगल में उतरा, जहाँ बड़े-बड़े पेड़ों की छतरी के नीचे बहुत-सी चिड़ियाँ चहचहा रही थीं। वहाँ उसने अपने भाई तोतों के झुंड को देखा और मन ही मन ख़ुश हुआ। फिर वह उड़ता हुआ एक पहाड़ और नदी की तस्वीर के पास जा बैठा - तस्वीर में एक नदी पहाड़ों के बीच बहती दिख रही थी, मगर दूर तक चलकर भी वह किसी दरवाज़े या रास्ते से बाहर नहीं निकल पा रही थी, ठीक तस्वीर के फ़्रेम में क़ैद पानी जैसी। यह देखकर तोते ने सोचा कि उसका अपना मन भी इसी तरह बरसों से लेखक की तंग-नज़र, महदूद अक़्ल में क़ैद रहा है। इसी उधेड़बुन में वह उड़ते-उड़ते एक ख़ूबसूरत, गेहुँए रंग की, साड़ी पहने औरत के पीछे-पीछे चल पड़ा। वह औरत नदी किनारे रेत पर चलते हुए अचानक एक ज़हरीले साँप के काटने से गिर पड़ी। तोते ने फ़ौरन इंसानी सूरत अपनाकर उसकी मदद की - साँप का ज़हर अपने मुँह से चूसकर औरत की जान बचाई। इस तरह उसने साँप के डसने की जगह से सारा ख़ून चूसकर एक क़ीमती ज़ेवर हासिल किया, जो उसकी शर्त के मुताबिक़, हर बार ज़हर चूसने पर एक और गहना दे देता।

The parrot recounts that it landed far away in a forest where many birds were chirping under the canopy of tall trees. There it saw a flock of fellow parrots and felt glad. Then, flying on, it settled beside a picture of a mountain and a river on a wall - in the picture a river flowed among the mountains, but however far it travelled it never found any door or path leading out, exactly like water trapped inside a picture frame. Seeing this, the parrot thought its own mind, too, had for years been trapped just like that inside the writer's narrow, limited intellect. Lost in this thought, it flew on and found itself following a beautiful, wheat-complexioned woman in a sari. Walking along the riverside sand, she was suddenly bitten by a poisonous snake and collapsed. The parrot instantly took human form and helped her - sucking the snake's venom out with its own mouth to save her life. In doing so, by drawing out all the blood from the bite, it gained a precious piece of jewellery, since - by the terms of a bargain - every time it sucked out venom, it would receive another such gem.

औरत की जान बचाने के बाद तोते ने उसे उसके महबूब के पास जाने में मदद करने की पेशकश की। रास्ते में उसे एक 'मालकिन' मिली, जिसने उसे एक बस्ती की तरफ़ इशारा किया, जहाँ मोती और ज़ेवर बेचने वाले ख़ूबसूरत मकान बने थे। मालकिन ने शर्त रखी कि अगर वह कुछ हासिल कर पाया तो चलते वक़्त उसे अपने साथ ले जाएगा, वरना नहीं। तोते ने मौक़ा ग़नीमत जानकर वहाँ से एक मकान ख़रीदने की कोशिश की। मकान के मालिक ने अपने मुनाफ़े और चालाकी से पेश आते हुए तोते को उलझाने की कोशिश की, मगर तोता आख़िरकार अपनी ज़हर-चूसने से कमाई गई दौलत और ज़ेवरों से पाँच बार जुए/पच्चीसी (कैंची) के खेल में उलझा - हर बार जोखिम के साथ। आख़िर में मकान के मालिक ने उसकी सच्चाई और मेहनत को सराहते हुए उसे उसका हक़ अदा किया।

After saving the woman's life, the parrot offered to help her reach her beloved. Along the way it met a 'landlady' who pointed it toward a settlement of fine houses where people sold pearls and jewellery. The landlady set a condition: if the parrot managed to gain anything, she would take it along with her when she left; otherwise not. Seizing the opportunity, the parrot tried to buy a house there. The house's owner, sharp and profit-minded, tried to entangle the parrot in a bargain, and the parrot ended up risking its snake-venom earnings and jewels across five rounds of a game of chance/dice with him. In the end the house's owner, recognising the parrot's honesty and effort, paid it its due.

अपनी मेहनत की दौलत लेकर तोता दरिया के किनारे पहुँचा तो वहाँ उसे वही साँप मिल गया जिसने पहले औरत को डसा था। साँप ने चालाकी से एक शर्त रखी - अगर तोता अपने बाज़ू पर एक और डसने का ज़ख़्म बर्दाश्त कर ले, तो उसकी सारी दौलत उसकी हो जाएगी। तोता लालच में आकर राज़ी हो गया, मगर साँप ने बार-बार डसकर धोखे से उसकी सारी दौलत, ज़ेवर और मकान समेत सब कुछ हासिल कर लिया। तोता ठगा हुआ, दर्द से कराहता हुआ, अकेला और बहुत मायूस खड़ा रह गया।

Carrying the wealth it had earned, the parrot reached the riverbank, where it ran into the very snake that had earlier bitten the woman. The snake slyly proposed a bargain: if the parrot would bear one more bite on its arm, all its wealth would become the snake's. Blinded by greed, the parrot agreed - but the snake bit it again and again, deceitfully stripping it of all its wealth, jewels and even the house. The parrot was left cheated, groaning in pain, alone and deeply despondent.

आख़िरकार तोते ने वापस लौटने का फ़ैसला किया। रास्ते में उसे कहीं वह औरत, न महबूब, न मालकिन का कोई निशान मिला - जैसे वह पूरी बस्ती ही ग़ायब हो गई हो। सामने सिर्फ़ एक वीरान मैदान था, जो क्षितिज तक फैला हुआ था। तोता समझ गया कि यह सब उसकी अपनी जादूगरी, अपनी सोच और तख़य्युल की उपज थी। थका-हारा, दर्द से भरा तोता आख़िरकार लेखक के पास वापस आया और उसने अपनी पूरी दास्तान सुनाई। कहानी ख़त्म होते-होते तोता बुरी तरह थक चुका था; उसने एक थकी हुई उड़ान भरी और वापस लेखक के जिस्म में दाख़िल हो गया। मगर अगली सुबह जब लेखक उठा तो तोता फिर पहले की तरह ताज़ा-दम होकर उसके जिस्म से निकल आया और पहाड़ की उसी तस्वीर की तरफ़ उड़ चला, फिर कुछ देर बाद बिना कुछ कहे वापस रास्ते से बाहर निकल गया। लेखक को अब यह समझ आने लगा कि उसके 'मन के तोते' के भीतर कितनी कशमकश और बेचैनी छिपी है, मगर यह भी समझ नहीं आता कि इस बेचैनी को कैसे शांत किया जाए। हर शाम तोता उदास और मायूस लौट आता है, और लेखक हर शाम अपने मन के तोते की नई दर्दभरी दास्तान सुनने के लिए तैयार रहता है।

Eventually the parrot decided to turn back. On the way it found no trace anywhere of the woman, the beloved, or the landlady - as though the whole settlement had vanished. Ahead lay only a bare, empty plain stretching to the horizon. The parrot realised all of this had been a conjuring of its own mind and imagination. Exhausted and aching, the parrot finally came back to the writer and told him its whole story. By the time the tale ended the parrot was thoroughly worn out; it took one tired flight and went back inside the writer's body. But the next morning, when the writer woke, the parrot emerged again, fresh as before, and flew toward that same picture of the mountain - then, after a while, went back out of sight without a word. The writer now begins to understand how much restlessness and inner conflict is hidden within his own 'mind's parrot', yet he still cannot grasp how this restlessness might ever be stilled. Every evening the parrot returns, tired and despondent, and every evening the writer sits ready to hear his mind's parrot tell a fresh, pain-filled tale.
