جگر صاحب Jigar Sahab

एक तेज़ दोपहर थी, वह भी लखनऊ की - जहाँ लोग पंखा झलते और पसीना पोंछते हुए भी एक-दूसरे के साथ चलते रहते हैं। तुफ़ैल साहब लखनऊ वालों के शायराना मिज़ाज पर सोचते हैं - यहाँ की सरज़मीन ऐसी है कि यहाँ आकर बड़े-बड़े शायर भी क़दम जमा लेते हैं। कुछ लोगों का ख़याल है कि लखनऊ में सोने-जागने वाले भी शेर ही सुनते-सुनाते हैं। इसी सोच के दौरान उन्हें एक शेर याद आता है जो बग़ैर तख़ल्लुस के था।

It was a sharp afternoon, and that too in Lucknow - where people keep each other company even while fanning themselves and wiping away sweat. Tufail reflects on the poetic temperament of Lucknow's people - this land is such that even great poets settle here. Some believe that in Lucknow even people falling asleep and waking up do so amid the exchange of verses. Amid this reflection, he recalls a couplet, one without any poet's pen-name attached to it.

तुफ़ैल साहब की नींद एक शेर की आवाज़ से खुलती है और वह जागकर दूसरे शेर भी सुनने लगते हैं। पता चलता है कि क़रीब ही उनके शौकत साहब की क़याम-गाह पर कुछ शायर अपने अशआर सुना रहे हैं। तुफ़ैल साहब वहाँ पहुँचते हैं तो शौकत साहب उन्हें एक निहायत ख़ुश-मिज़ाज, बे-रोक-टोक-गुफ़्तगू करने वाले शख़्स से मिलवाते हैं - यही जगर साहब हैं। पहली मुलाक़ात में ही जगर साहब मज़ाक़ में अपना तआरुफ़ ख़ुद तुफ़ैल साहब के नाम से करा देते हैं, जिससे महफ़िल में हँसी का माहौल बन जाता है। इसके बाद दोनों में शेर-ओ-शायरी और नोक-झोंक का सिलसिला चलता है, और एक शेर पर जगر साहب तुफ़ैल साहب से पूछते हैं - 'आपके पास क़लम है?' 'क्या लिखिएगा?'

Tufail is woken from his nap by the sound of a couplet, and stays awake to hear more. He learns that nearby, at Shaukat Sahab's residence, some poets are reciting their verses. When Tufail arrives, Shaukat Sahab introduces him to a thoroughly good-humoured, uninhibited talker - this is Jigar Sahab. At their very first meeting, Jigar Sahab jokingly introduces himself using Tufail's own name, which sets off laughter in the gathering. What follows is an exchange of verses and playful banter between the two, during which, over one particular couplet, Jigar Sahab asks Tufail: 'Do you have a pen with you?' 'What will you write?'

तुफ़ैल साहब बताते हैं कि जगर साहब बहुत कम लोगों को ख़त लिखते थे, मगर जिन्हें लिखते उनमें हर ख़त का मज़मून क़रीब-क़रीब यकसाँ होता - वही ख़ुलूस, वही मुहब्बत, वही यगानगत। जगर साहब बड़े नफ़ासत-पसंद थे - नफ़ासत उनकी ज़िंदगी पर छाई रहती, मगर ये नफ़ासत तकल्लुफ़ या नुमाइश की सूरत में नहीं बल्कि सादगी और बे-साख़्तगी में झलकती थी। वह ख़ूबसूरत नज़र आने वाले चेहरों को भी हसब-ए-ज़रूरत ही ख़ूबसूरत मानते और अपनी बातों में बड़ी खरी राय देते। महफ़िलों में जगर साहب की हाज़िर-जवाबी और फ़िक़रे-बाज़ी की वजह से दोस्तों का हुजूम उनके गिर्द जमा रहता, और अक्सर उनकी बातें हँसी-मज़ाक़ में ढल जातीं।

Tufail tells us Jigar Sahab wrote letters to very few people, but the ones he did write to received letters whose theme was almost always similar - the same sincerity, the same affection, the same sense of closeness. Jigar Sahab was very fastidious about refinement - this refinement suffused his whole way of living, yet it showed not through affectation or display, but through simplicity and naturalness. He judged even good-looking faces by strictly what was needed, and gave frank, unvarnished opinions in conversation. In gatherings, Jigar Sahab's quick wit and gift for the memorable one-liner meant that a crowd of friends always gathered around him, and his remarks often dissolved into laughter.

जगर साहब की एक और नुमायाँ आदत उनका भुलक्कड़पन था। वह अक्सर लोगों को, उनके चेहरों को, और मुलाक़ातों के वक़्त-ओ-मक़ाम को भूल जाया करते थे। कभी-कभी दो-चार बरस के फ़ासले पर मुलाक़ात होती तो उन्हें याद ही नहीं आता कि पहले कब और कहाँ मुलाक़ात हुई थी। उन्होंने कभी कोई डायरी नहीं रखी जिसमें मुलाक़ातों या मौक़ों का हिसाब रहता, फिर भी अजीब बात यह थी कि वह किसी के साथ अपने रिश्ते की असली रूह और एहसास को भूलते नहीं थे - सिर्फ़ तारीख़ें और छोटी-छोटी बातें ही भूल जाती थीं।

Another prominent trait of Jigar Sahab's was his forgetfulness. He often forgot people, their faces, and the time and place of meetings. Sometimes when a meeting happened after a gap of a few years, he could not recall when or where they had met before. He never kept a diary to record meetings or occasions, and yet, oddly, he never forgot the true spirit and feeling of a relationship with someone - only dates and small details slipped from his memory.

एक मर्तबा का ज़िक्र है कि लखनऊ में जगर साहब का बटुआ कहीं गुम हो गया, जिसमें क़रीब बारह सौ रुपये थे। इस हादसे के अफ़सोस में तुफ़ैल साहब उनसे मिलने पहुँचे और पूछा कि बटुआ कैसे और कहाँ गुम हुआ। जगर साहब ने बताया कि वह बाज़ार में सौदा ख़रीदते वक़्त कहीं बैठे थे, जब जेब में हाथ डाला तो बटुआ ग़ायब था। तुफ़ैल साहब ने पूछा कि क्या उन्होंने चोर से कुछ कहा। जगर साहब का जवाब था: 'कुछ कहा नहीं।' पूछने पर 'क्यों नहीं?' - जगर साहब ने बड़ी नफ़ासत से जवाब दिया कि अगर वह चोर से यह कह देते कि 'तुमने मेरा बटुआ चुरा लिया है', तो उस वक़्त चोर को जो पशेमानी (शर्मिंदगी) होती, वह उनसे देखी न जाती। यह जवाब उनकी हाज़िर-जवाबी के साथ-साथ एक अजीब बड़प्पन और हमदर्दी भी ज़ाहिर करता है - अपने ही नुक़सान में भी वह चोर की शर्मिंदगी का ख़याल रखते हैं।

There is an account of an occasion when Jigar Sahab's wallet, containing around twelve hundred rupees, went missing somewhere in Lucknow. Distressed by the incident, Tufail went to meet him and asked how and where the wallet had gone missing. Jigar Sahab explained that he had been out shopping in the market, had sat down somewhere, and when he reached into his pocket the wallet was gone. Tufail then asked whether he had said anything to the thief. Jigar Sahab's reply was: 'I said nothing.' Asked 'why not?', Jigar Sahab answered, with great refinement, that if he had told the thief 'you have stolen my wallet', the embarrassment the thief would have felt at that moment was more than he could bear to witness. This reply reveals not just his quick wit but also an unusual large-heartedness and compassion - even amid his own loss, he was mindful of sparing the thief's shame.

आख़िर में तुफ़ैल साहب लिखते हैं कि यह दास्तान चाहती तो बहुत तवील हो सकती थी, मगर उन्होंने जान-बूझकर इसे चंद सतरों में समेट दिया - क्योंकि उनका मक़सद सिर्फ़ यह बताना था कि जगर साहब की शख़्सियत ने उन्हें इतना मुतास्सिर किया कि ऐसे इंसान कम ही मिलते हैं जो अपनी उंगलियों पर गिने जा सकें। वह मानते हैं कि इसमें उनकी अपनी क़िस्मत और उस वक़्त के माहौल का भी हाथ था कि उन्हें जगर साहب जैसी दिलचस्प शख़्सियत से मिलने का मौक़ा मिला।

In the end, Tufail writes that this account could easily have grown much longer, but he deliberately kept it to a few lines - because his only purpose was to convey how deeply Jigar Sahab's personality affected him, noting that people who leave such an impression are rare enough to be counted on one's fingers. He acknowledges that his own good fortune and the atmosphere of that time also played a part in giving him the chance to meet such an interesting personality as Jigar Sahab.
