  1. Verse 1

etad ākhyāya rāmāya maharṣiḥ kumbhasaṃbhavaḥ | asyām evāparaṃ vākyaṃ kathāyām upacakrame

Having related this to Rāma, the great sage born of the pot (Agastya) began yet another passage within this same tale:

  2. Verse 2

tataḥ sa daṇḍaḥ kākutstha bahuvarṣagaṇāyutam | akarot tatra mandātmā rājyaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam

"Then that Daṇḍa, O Kākutstha, for many groups of years, dull-souled, governed there a kingdom free of the thorns of enemies.

  3. Verse 3

atha kāle tu kasmiṃś cid rājā bhārgavam āśramam | ramaṇīyam upākrāmac caitre māsi manorame

Now at a certain time the king came to the lovely hermitage of the Bhārgava (Śukra), in the delightful month of Caitra.

  4. Verse 4

tatra bhārgavakanyāṃ sa rūpeṇāpratimāṃ bhuvi | vicarantīṃ vanoddeśe daṇḍo 'paśyad anuttamām

There Daṇḍa saw a daughter of the Bhārgava, matchless in beauty upon earth, the peerless one, wandering in a reach of the forest.

  5. Verse 5

sa dṛṣṭvā tāṃ sudurmedhā anaṅgaśarapīḍitaḥ | abhigamya susaṃvignaḥ kanyāṃ vacanam abravīt

Seeing her, that exceedingly foolish one, pierced by the arrows of Love, approached, greatly agitated, and said these words to the maiden:

  6. Verse 6

kutas tvam asi suśroṇi kasya vāsi sutā śubhe | pīḍito 'ham anaṅgena pṛcchāmi tvāṃ sumadhyame

'Whence are you, O fair-hipped one, or whose daughter are you, O auspicious one? I am tormented by Love; I ask you, O slender-waisted one.'

  7. Verse 7

tasya tv evaṃ bruvāṇasya mohonmattasya kāminaḥ | bhārgavī pratyuvācedaṃ vacaḥ sānunayaṃ nṛpam

To him speaking thus — a lover crazed with delusion — the Bhārgavī (Śukra's daughter) made this conciliatory reply to the king:

  8. Verse 8

bhārgavasya sutāṃ viddhi devasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ | arajāṃ nāma rājendra jyeṣṭhām āśramavāsinīm

'Know me to be the daughter of the Bhārgava, the god of untroubled deeds; Arajā by name, O lord of kings, the eldest, dwelling in the hermitage.

  9. Verse 9

guruḥ pitā me rājendra tvaṃ ca śiṣyo mahātmanaḥ | vyasanaṃ sumahat kruddhaḥ sa te dadyān mahātapāḥ

My father is a guru, O lord of kings, and you are a pupil of that great soul; angered, he of great austerity might bring upon you very great calamity.

  10. Verse 10

yadi vātra mayā kāryaṃ dharmadṛṣṭena satpathā | varayasva nṛpa śreṣṭha pitaraṃ me mahādyutim

But if there is anything to be done here with me, by the righteous and virtuous path, then ask for me from my father of great splendor, O best of kings.

  11. Verse 11

anyathā tu phalaṃ tubhyaṃ bhaved ghorābhisaṃhitam | krodhena hi pitā me 'sau trailokyam api nirdahet

Otherwise the fruit that comes to you would be bound up with terror; for in his wrath that father of mine could burn up even the three worlds.'

  12. Verse 12

evaṃ bruvāṇām arajāṃ daṇḍaḥ kāmaśarārditaḥ | pratyuvāca madonmattaḥ śirasy ādhāya so 'ñjalim

To Arajā speaking thus, Daṇḍa, tormented by Love's arrows, replied, crazed with passion, placing his joined palms upon his head:

  13. Verse 13

prasādaṃ kuru suśroṇi na kālaṃ kṣeptum arhasi | tvatkṛte hi mama prāṇā vidīryante śubhānane

'Show me grace, O fair-hipped one; you ought not to waste the moment; for on your account my life-breaths are torn asunder, O fair-faced one.

  14. Verse 14

tvāṃ prāpya hi vadho vāpi pāpaṃ vāpi sudāruṇam | bhaktaṃ bhajasva māṃ bhīru bhajamānaṃ suvihvalam

For in winning you, be it even death or most dreadful sin [I care not]; favor me, your devotee, O timid one — me, your suitor, sorely distraught.'

  15. Verse 15

evam uktvā tu tāṃ kanyāṃ dorbhyāṃ gṛhya balād balī | visphurantīṃ yathākāmaṃ maithunāyopacakrame

Having spoken thus, the mighty one, seizing that maiden by force with both arms as she struggled, set about union with her at his will.

The epic treats this violation as the crime that brings about the curse and the destruction of Daṇḍa's realm, narrated in the following sargas.

  16. Verse 16

tam anarthaṃ mahāghoraṃ daṇḍaḥ kṛtvā sudāruṇam | nagaraṃ prayayau cāśu madhumantam anuttamam

Having done that most terrible and most dreadful outrage, Daṇḍa swiftly went to the peerless city of Madhumanta.

  17. Verse 17

arajāpi rudantī sā āśramasyāvidūrataḥ | pratīkṣate susaṃtrastā pitaraṃ devasaṃnibham

And Arajā too, weeping, not far from the hermitage, awaited, sorely terrified, her godlike father.
